The Positive Correlation Between Serial Killers

Many experts in the criminology field are intrigued by serial killers and their minds. When studying serial killers, these experts have indicated that there is a positive correlation between the behavioural disorder Antisocial personality disorder which is better know to the average person as being a psychopath, and between serial killers. The definition of a psychopath is “someone who knows right from wrong but does not care . . .” (Bain, Colyer, Hawes, and Newton). The definition of a serial killer is someone who kills on at least three separate occasions (according to the FBI handbook) and take some form of a break between murders (Ryan). The reason being able to manipulative someone is so important as a serial killer, is this allows serial killers to convince victims to get into their cars or come to their homes. Being a pathological liar allows the killers to make up stories in response to questions the police may ask (Bain, Colyer, Hawes, and Newton). Bundy’s manipulation technique was to act injured, often times by wearing a fake cast on his arm. This would cause the victim(s) to feel sympathetic and offer help to Bundy (Bardsley). Bundy would lie to his girlfriends in an attempt to impress them, but ultimately it drove them away (Bardsley). Before Bernardo was a serial killer he was the Scarborough rapist. When Bernardo was in for an interview with police in respect to the recent murders, he told the cops politely that he had also been a suspect in the Scarborough rape case due to the facial similarities. Because he was so forthcoming and so polite during the interview, police believed there was no way he could be the murderer they were looking for (Bardsley). Paul manipulated the police and this proved to work in his favour, until DNA testing was done and technology proved Paul was the serial killer (Bardsley).
