For my second observation I went back to my elementary school from when I was younger and observed a second grade physical education class and their teacher Mrs. McFarland. It was a rainy day so the lesson was held in the cafeteria. I observed Mrs. McFarland teach the first lesson of basketball to her class, before class she told me that this would be the first lesson of a 6 part lesson. When the students walked into the cafeteria they immediately sat down in their assigned spots on the floor, Mrs. McFarland stood up at the front of the room by the stage area and all the students. When all the students were seated Mrs. McFarland gave a very brief explanation on what the students would be doing that day and then they started with a warm up. During the warm up the students started out galloping around the room to music and when the music stop she would shout of jumping jacks and the students would do jumping jacks until the music came back on. They did this warm up for about 5 minutes and then went back to their spots and sat down. Mrs. McFarland went back to the front of the cafeteria and began to talk to the students about what they would be doing. She gave a demonstration of the triple threat position and then asked the students some questions about what they saw her just do. Next, she had the children grab their our balls and come back to their spot so that they could practice some ball handling drills. They used their finger tips to ping pong the ball from hand to hand,
We can all agree that basketball is almost becoming popular around the world. So many people play this sport but do people know how basketball started and how it evolute throughout the years since basketball was borned? So like every other sports and creations, there has to be a inventor and in basketball there was a man by the name of Dr. James Naismith. “Created in 1891 in a Springfield, Massachusetts YMCA gymnasium has grown into a game played worldwide by more than 300 million people”(historybits.com). So this game has been out for a very long period of time with many changing of the rules in basketball throughout the history. When it was first played in the late 1800s, there were different rules and even different looking basketball. As for the rules, originally there would be 10 people on the court but it first started with 18 people on the court which after couple of years it changed to only 10 people. Substitution was also different and the rule for this was at first no one can enter until the next game. “The rule was changed in 1920 to allow a player to re-enter the game one time. In 1934, the rule was expanded to allow players to re-enter the game twice, and, in 1945 the rule was finally changed to permit players to return to the game an unlimited number of times”(hooptactics.com). The first basketball looked very alike a football but round. The backboards were made out of straight wood and the baskets were made out of peach baskets or square boxes. There was only
This experiment transpired because of a fascination with basketball. In inches, the tested variable was the basketball court surface that gave the basketball the most immense bounce. After testing each surface, the data got averaged out, and based on the statistics, the multi-purpose floor averaged .7 inches more colossal than the hardwood, and 3.7 more than concrete.
By looking at the frequency histogram comparing height and amount of NBA players it is noticeable that the most NBA players are 6’3” to 6’8” and that there is very little NBA players in the data that are 5’9” to 6’2”. In the other histogram, comparing free throw percentages and amount of NBA players almost all of the NBA players in the data make 75% to 89.9% of their free throws and very little make make under 75% or over 89.9% of their free throws. These histograms show that most NBA players, with all different heights, make almost the same amount of free throws as other NBA players.
Basketball is a favorite sport to many Americans. It is a sport that takes strength, determination, hand-eye coordination and many other challenging aspects. All of this skill is used to do one thing, put the ball in the hoop. The ball itself is surprisingly very complex and takes a while to be comfortable with it.
Damian Lillard once said, "Whenever I'm on the court, I feel like I'm making a statement and a case that I belong." That quote says a lot about the feeling on the court; however, what I see and hear is what gets me those feelings, and what I feel gives me the drive for success. The more and more I drive towards success in the game of basketball the more people I meet and the more motivation and inspiring I get from those people.
Jumpstart Academy is a program designed to keep children active and healthy, while providing them with the necessary fundamental movement skills needed to excel in sports and games. I was delighted with my involvement in this program as it was very much exciting and exhilarating to see the younger generation evolve as not only athletes but also as members of the community. My goal within the program was to provide the youth with opportunities to achieve success through physical literacy. On a weekly basis, we would start off the day with a warmup activity to ensure the body and mind is prepared for the upcoming exercises. Each week was divergent from the previous one as there was a new fundamental skill to focus on. For example, week 2 would
“I don’t know what is wrong with me” I told myself. I have always wanted to score a goal to give my team a point. I plan to just risk it all today and shoot. I was so nervous I turned red.
After the fifth/sixth grade we had the second graders. Mr. Kinner did not use the nets for these guys. They had not progressed to serving so he just used pretend nets and set up teams of two. They practiced the forearm and overhead hits. He modeled the good sportsman like high five and good game with them also. They decided that they did not like the high five so they fist bumped instead. It was so interesting to watch because their enthusiasm for this was great. The enthusiasm was catching after that because all the rest of the grades, even the kindergarteners were excited that Mr. Kinner had given them away to be encouraging to everyone. Again, this was a culmination of teaching good sportsmanship because he had been having them say things to their teammates like “good Job” and “You’ll get it next time.” He just added the next step, which was encouraging the other team as
To begin with, I expected to just help as needed and be a standby for the coach. Little did I know, I would be participating and teaching the children my knowledge of basketball skills. The first day of practice only one child showed up with six volunteers, so we participated and practiced with the child. I noticed the child had apparent cognition delays and was unable to make a basket. I began to analyze his actions and learning techniques to figure out how I could help. In no time, I was able to design an intervention that would prepare the child to successfully shoot a basketball. I noticed his style of learning was repetitive motion so I told him to, “Bend your knees, and jump for the sky.”
basket ball, Then in second grade I started soccer and played for 3 years, then I started karate and I'm a orange belt and 2 stripes, then Now not only do I play instruments but I also play sports. When I was in first grade I played basket ball and then a new sport got introduced to our school. Its called speed stacking. You get a stack of 12 special designed cups with wholes on the bottom so they don't stick together. You can stack them in a bunch of ways like the cycle, 9 cycle, 3 cycle, 3-3, 3-3-3, 3-6-3, 1-10-1, 6-6, 3-3-3-3, and one where you lay out 12 cups and move forward with your hands while picking up the cups. There are many more ways you can stack them. It is an amazing sport, and on the cycle (The most difficult technique) I got
NBA basketball is has gotten more and more strict since the game itself started. Nowadays if you go up for a layup and get pushed a little, you either fall or flop and it's called a foul. If you argue with a player or a ref you get a technical foul called on you. The refs break up all the fights now, if you start getting in each others face the fight will get broken up and you will get punished. Back in 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s players could settle their beef with each other on the court. Some players who played physical in the old NBA days are Dennis Rodman, Kobe Bryant, and Charles Oakley.
You do not have to be extraordinary athlete to be a good shooter. You have to expert the basic shooting fundamentals. You have to reenact in game situations when you practice. Once you’ve mastered the fundamentals, you’ll have to be confident when you take your shot, confidence is crucial.
Running into the gym with my team, knowing it was my last middle school basketball game, but first championship game I felt elated and truly blessed. My knees quivered with anticipation after seeing all the bleachers filled with people. After realizing even the press and other media was in attendance I grasped the moment like a newly elected president at his inauguration. I am warming up doing basketball drills, when I began to look at the flags on the gym wall depicting the history of the basketball team. The years and dates of the last championship game, Historically a championship game had not been won since 2007 . The more I stared at the flags, the more it made me want to win this game and make history in this gym. As the crowd and cheerleaders start to chant, cheer and get loud, I started to feel more comfortable and rowdy more than I had ever felt in any other game that I’ve played. Waiting for the referee to blow the whistle for jumpall to start. I felt my fingertips tapping the side of my leg, which for some reason gives me a sign to myself that I am pumped up and ready to play!
The more and more I look around I begin to see how physics are integrated into practically everything that we do. These things would surely go unnoticed without making a conscious effort to notice them. For example simple things like riding a bike, or driving a car, or playing catch with a son or daughter. Just as these activities are loaded with elements of physics, sports are also, especially basketball. Physics play a part in every aspect of the game, from dribbling, passing, and shooting, to things as simple as setting a screen. First we should take a look at the elements of dribbling.
There are many aspects to the game of basketball and physics can be applied to all of them. Although to be good at basketball it is not necessary to play it from a physics point of view. Basketball players become good by developing muscle memory for the actions that must be performed in the game of basketball from years of practice. Nevertheless knowing some of the physics in the game of basketball can help a good player be a better player. In this paper I will cover the three most important aspects of the game, shooting, dribbling and passing.
