Abigail’s malicious intent causes her to use the fear of the girls who were allegedly caught in the woods doing witchery with Abigail to manipulate them into thinking about the consequences in order to protect herself. By committing this disrespectful sin, she gained total control and power over the girls and commanded them to do as she ordered or she would hurt them. Abigail proceeds to tell the girls, “Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you. And you know I can do it.” (Miller 20) In this quote, Abigail is threatening and manipulating the other girls into following her lead. Many townspeople …show more content…
Abigail originally commits these sins because she is in love with John Proctor. When she had a one time affair with John, she immediately fell in love. John, however, did not feel the same way and only saw it as lust. When Elizabeth Proctor fired her from her service, Abigail create a vendetta to ruin her life. When Abigail originally gets questioned about why she was fired from Goody Proctor’s service she instinctively gets defensive about how Goody Proctor only tells lies. Abigail tries to make John Proctor doubt his loyal wife by saying, “She is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me! She is a cold sniveling woman, and you bend to her! Let her turn you like a-” (Miller 15). This quote perfectly exemplifies the malice of Abigail. In this quote, she spits lies for the ultimate goal to marry ‘the love of her life’. Abby’s envious attitude toward Elizabeth ensures the fact that she will not stop to get what she wants. Abigail also creates a poppet in court and uses Mary Warren as bait to plant in the Proctor’s house, which leads to Elizabeth Proctor getting taken by As evident here, her extreme jealousy makes her turn to petty name calling in order to create hesitation in John’s mind and a slight chance that Abigail might be his true
Abigail was once found dancing in the woods with many of the other girls. After the girls were caught, Abigail was in fear of her life because she knew that if someone else was not blamed, she would be accused and killed. Abigail Williams tried everything to avoid being blamed. She accuses others to escape punishment and persecution. Also, she accuses the people for the witch hunts because of jealousy. Abigail wants to continue the affair, even though John Proctor tried to tell her that the affair is over, but she desperately tried to keep the romance alive. John Proctor states, “Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again” (Miller 23). Next, Abigail’s cunning manner causes fear in the girl’s mind. She slaps Betty for pretending because she does not want anybody to know about the witch hunt. Furthermore, she controls the girls and manipulates Danforth by telling lies. Abigail is culpable for the Salem Tragedy.
In The Crucible, I assume that the character Abigail is a static character. Abigail is considered a static character for the reason that no matter what her feelings never change. She does whatever she is yearning to be happy with herself. It makes no difference if she is hurting other people as long she is joyous. An example is how she accuses Elizabeth Proctor of being a witch even though it's not true. She only did it for the reason that she thought she would be able to be with John Proctor. The character John Proctor is a dynamic character. John is considered a dynamic character because he changes his feelings in the entire play. In the beginning he was a quiet farmer and now he is a brave man with a great deal of courage. In the beginning
“... I will come to you in the dark of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you.” this quote was said by Abigail Williams a character from the Crucible. She said this to threaten the girls not to tell about her drinking blood. Abigail Williams is a seventeen year old girl who had an affair with john proctor a farmer. She also drank blood to kill his wife and did it while dancing in the woods. After getting caught dancing she blamed it on witchcraft and became a saint by accusing people of witchcraft. Abigail williams and I both share traits about our personalities like our spitefulness towards people, cunning with our words, and selfishness for what we want and have. The first trait
In the story of “The Crucible” Abigail is guilty because she had an affair with john, she lied to others, had blamed many others than herself.
Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible has a variety of unique and memorable characters that change & progress throughout the entire play. Some characters may even change the final outcome of the entire story. Abigail Williams, an antagonist in the play is a character some may describe her as dreadful. I myself would describe her as smart and persuasive because of the way she tried to manipulate everyone. Abigail's actions are quite obvious, but I believe she doesn’t deserve all the blame for what she has done.
In the crucibles Abigail is guilty of passing her faults onto someone else. Abigale is guilty of living an average American live, because in modern day we are all guilty of doing this. No matter how hard we try we all fall in the trap that Abigail has portrayed in the book.
Having the ability to manipulate people may concern others. However, not for a character named Abigail in the book “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller. Furthermore, Abigail manipulates people in the village into thinking she is not a witch. In addition, she cause this drama because she wants to maintain a good reputation to the peers around her. Not to mention, later in the book she threatens the girls who performed witchcraft with her not to confess. On the other hand, the Puritans in this story has a strong faith to their savior name God. This has an impact onto the story written by Miller because it highlights their true values to God and how far they are willing to go just to prove their devotion. In this essay, I will discuss how reputation
Abigail was the victim of the effects of witnessing her parents die. Abigail told the girls “ I saw Indians smash my dear parents’ head on the pillow next to mine…” (Miller 144) This cruel event she experienced at such a young age caused Abigail to act heartless. Abigail witnessed something tragic, her heart was smashed into pieces. Witnessing someone you love die, changes you and often brings you into the dark. Suffering from that sort of pain, its expected she would be full of vengeance. Abigail warns the girls “... come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you.” (Miller 144) Abigail issued a consequence if the girls spoke of what happened in the woods. She had no way to process the anger because she had been brought up by violence and it desensitized her. Abigail was coming from a place of tragedy and despair, her spoken words were not her true intentions.
In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, Miller shows the greatest transformation in the characters John Proctor, Abigail Williams, and Mary Warren in order to convey the idea that fear is contagious and has the potential to change people and their beliefs entirely. More specifically, Miller is trying to convey the message of how fast people changed their morals and who they are based on the Red Scare of the mid 1900s.
The Crucible by Arthur Miller was the fictional version of what happened in 1692 after 18 year old Abigail Williams decided she needed a 34 year old man. She was determined to do anything to get this man because she was in “love” with him. This man, John Proctor, had an affair with Abigail while he was married to Goody Proctor. Abigail wanted Goody dead so she could have John all to herself. That is how the whole Salem Witch Trials came about. Eighteen year old Abigail Williams is to blame for all the events of the Salem Witch Trials.
Abigail was a liar and she had the rest of the young girls up under her wing. As Abigail stated in (act 1 463) “No one was naked!” You mistake yourself, uncle!” Abigail was lying about her and the other girls dancing in the woods so her uncle wouldn’t of think she had a bad name or was witched. Not only was Abigail a very good liar she was also a very good manipulator. In (act 1) Abigail said so many things to make the others look like they were wrong. For instance, Goody Proctor. (464) Abigail kept telling her uncle how Goody Proctor hated her and saying bad things about Goody Proctor trying to keep her name clean in the village when everyone knew she was a bad girl.
The movie rendition of the four-act play The Crucible begins with a girl lying in bed frozen. The town fears that witchcraft is to blame. The town doesn’t know but the girl is alive and awake and is only faking it all. A group of girls in Salem, Massachusetts make false accusations of witchcraft because of Abigail Williams. She convinces all the girls to lie to the court and to claim to have seen the Devil so that Abigail can have what she wants. She wants John Proctor, a married man with whom she had an affair with. Abigail’s accusations of witchcraft towards John’s wife Elizabeth are the focus of the story. When Abigail’s selfishness does too much harm she flees leaving John and Elizabeth in prison awaiting death. John Proctor must decide
The central character for The Crucible could be Abigail. Abigail is characterized as being a fabricator with destructive tendencies. Though she refuses to admit her name has been tainted in the town, Abigail knows of her carnage in the village has ruined it for good. Abigail is accused of witchcraft in the beginning of the act and therefore attempting to lie her way through it, she ends up admitting it. But alternately of taking the punishment, she blames someone else for pressuring her into it. The quote “Don’t lie! She comes to me while I sleep; she’s always making me dream corruptions!” (Miller 14) shows that Abby had admitted dreaming and doing corrupt things, but puts the blame on others. At the end of the act, the blame switches from
In the late 1600s, there were trials taking place that are now known as the Salem Witch Trials. The play The Crucible by Arthur Miller is based on these trials and events that took place in Salem. In the town of Salem this series of events is set off by a girl named Abigail Williams. In the first scene of the play, Abigail Williams and all of her friends go to the woods to dance. During that scene Reverend Parris walks into all of them dancing, singing, and supposedly “conjuring spirits”. Word gets out that all this happened, and it's all because of Abigail William’s jealousy towards Elizabeth Proctor.
In the novel “The Crucible”, Although Abigail did do many things that are wrong and truly punishable, I don't think all the blame should be placed on her because there was many factors adding on to the sad ending conclusion. Personally, I think Abigail was so in love torn over not having John Proctor as a lover or even just a friend in her life that she took revenge into her hands and vowed to herself that she would take Elizabeth’s happiness away from her. I think in a way she wanted Elizabeth to suffer just as she did when Elizabeth cut ties with her from seeing John Proctor after the affair. I feel that many people reading the story could in fact justify that it was all Abigail's fault for all the tears, pain, blood, and hurt caused throughout the story but many of her little girlfriends and village people participated in many of the lies that she told. People like Judge Danforth, Tituba, Mary Warren and many more did not help with their opinions and horrible judgments throughout the story. For example Tituba, towards the middle of the story says “ Mister Reverend, I do believe somebody else be witchin’ these children” and “ I don't know, sir, but the devil got him numerous witches”. If she would've never said that to the reverend the girls would of never really made such a big fuss yelling out other people's innocent names to the village. Honestly if she would of never said that i do think Abigail would of had such a good background story in keeping the lie up and i
