Edgar Allan Poe:
After having read some of his short stories, The first idea that comes to others and myself when hearing the name Poe is images of madmen, murders with blood all over, the idea of characters coming back to life and very bad endings. He was known to have written short stories, novels, a book of scientific theory, many essays, and many more. The denotation of this passage is the fact that the main character had come home drunk and literally just used a knife to take one eyeball off the cat. In this passage, we see visual imagery because the author describes in detail the state in which the author enters the house, the way he picks up the cat, and the way he kills the cat, which makes the character seem even more insane. For the direct characterization of the main character, we can see that he is a drunk and likes when people avoid him. He also has a problem with his identity and states that he forgot his true self the moment before taking the cat’s eyeballs out. As for the indirect characterization, the main character becomes a very aggressive person after alcohol consumption since he seizes the cat from the throat and tries to abuse him. The main character can also be characterised as an insane person with weird and mad ways in abusing a creature since he pops the cat’s eyes out. The cat might also be characterised as a strong cat that defends itself since it scratches his hand with its
Characterization is the creation or construction of a character by the author. Characterization can be used effectively when the author is describing the actions or emotions or thoughts of a character to the audience. In the story the Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allen Poe, he uses characterization to show that people are afraid of death, because he wants to show that everybody is going to die, and that people can't hide from it.
Poe ,truly, had a very inspired and original form of writing. His works tended to be on the darker side, but they appealed to people’s human nature. The new style provoked curiosity and sparked intrigue in many poets of the day. Alduos Huxley however equated Poe’s works to “wearing a diamond ring on every finger” declaring his works were too romantic and stating there is not much meaning behind the words. (Wiki)The disproportionate, gory details of many of Poe’s writings compelled many readers to question his mental health and the nature of his writings. Poe once even said himself, “I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity.”(Poe) However unethical and unscrupulous his life may have seemed, he did greatly influence modern literature and expanded the bounds of what we now consider poetry. Poe’s artistic vision is largely responsible for the wide variety of literature we enjoy today. Some of his most famous works include the poems: “The Raven”, which tells the story of lost love by a raven sitting on his mantle, “Ulalume”, which focuses on the death of a loved one, and his creepy, blood-chilling stories “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “The Tell-Tale Heart.” Some of his most used plots in stories were the eerie subjects of revenge, torture, murder, the plague, being buried
Character Analysis What is characterization and why is it so important? Characterization is the building of a character through their description and how they react to their environment. The description of characters in a story is important and helps the reader connect and get a better sense of the character. In William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily”, he reinforces the characterization of Miss Emily’s dominate and mysterious traits through images of her almost tyrannical father and by her own arrogant and controlling actions.
Characterization is an act of describing qualities and traits of a person. Characters in literature sometimes make dramatic transformations. In the novella, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, the character Scrooge was a harsh and selfish person, but overtime his personality changed after he witnessed how people had way harder and more stressful life than he had ever imagined.
Edgar Allan Poe was a very famous writer and editor. He wrote mainly wrote poetry and was famous for his tales of horror and mystery. These stories were known to capture the reader's interest and their imagination for anyone reading this story. They were known to be truly captivating to the people of the 19th century when he was alive and even today. Edgar Allan Poe had many great accomplishments including self-publishing his very first book and had some of “The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym.”He also launched a new genre of detective fiction when he released his book "The Murders in the Rue Morgue." While being such a great writer and introducing this new genre he earned himself the nickname of Father of the Detective story and won a literary prize in 1843 for a book of his called “The Gold Bug.” He is mainly known now for his poem “The Raven” which became a huge literary sensation in 1845.
Edgar Allan Poe is known for creating numerous short stories and poems. A few titles of his famous works include “The Raven”, “The Fall of the House of Usher”, “The Black Cat”, and “The Masque of the Red Death”. While all of these stories revolve around different characters and settings, Poe consistently uses the methods of symbolism, irony, punishment, and allegory to propel the plot of the story and emphasize his main message to the audience. In particular, one of Poe’s stories that combines all of the previous elements into a striking work of art is “The Masque of the Red Death”, which was written by Poe in 1842. Within the story, Poe employs the use of several archetypes, such as “The Fall” of man, and symbols, such as the seven colored rooms, to underscore his message that Death cannot be stopped nor be avoided by anyone.
Edgar Allan Poe was a great writer. He wrote very dark stories and set the right tone for them. Many books that I have read cannot do this properly. This is what makes Poe a great writer in my opinion. There is also how he can describe one scene in one paragraph. I would compare him to Stephen King. There is a very dark and gloomy mood in most of his stories. Many of his stories have very silly and strange motives for a murder. I will compare the reasons for murder, the methods of murder, and the preparation for the murder.
The protagonist faces an internal conflict of his sanity vs. his alcoholism. The anonymous narrator also is in external conflict with Pluto because the cat symbolizes the struggle the narrator consistently endures in his alcoholism. Initially the narrator was very fond and had an “intensity of gratification” for his cat Pluto, but this could be perceived as the pleasure that alcohol brings when someone has the idea of drinking being “fun”. However, as the narrators’ feelings towards Pluto grow more resentful, and angry that can be attributed to the intense decline of his personality once he starts to become more of an alcoholic. Based on the validity of this assumption, then the central idea directly links to Pluto’s symbolism because the narrator mistreating the cat represents how the narrator is also ill-treating himself with alcohol. Accordingly, the many terrifying deeds the narrator pursued upon Pluto illustrated the insanity that has been induced on the narrator due to the ill-effects of his alcoholism.

As a short-story writer, Poe was a fascinating man of imagination. In theme, Poe places the human mind under investigation and probes insanity beneath the surface of normal existence. He was the first author in American literature to make the neurotic, the heroic figure, the protagonist, in his stories. Poe's most enduring tales are those of horror, the horror coming, from the working of an irrational or criminal mind, driven to evil or insanity by a perverse irrational force which, to Poe, is an elementary impulse in man.
Similarly, in “The Black Cat,” the nameless protagonist defends the reliability of his narrative. He, too, tells his story from a prison cell after committing murder. His victim, however, was his wife. The narrator tells us that he and his wife were very happy, and together they loved and owned a variety of pets. The narrator cannot fully explain his transition to cruelty, however. On the one hand, he blames his alcoholism as a rational explanation for his mood swings. On the other hand, he faults an innate spirit of perverseness that he says forced his hand. Both, he says, led him to abuse his favorite pet, “a remarkably large and beautiful [cat], entirely black, and sagacious to an astonishing degree.” He cut the cat’s eye from its socket
