In the bildungsroman - coming of age story, Great Expectations, written by Charles Dickens, the first stage of the novel reveals little about Pip’s fate and whether or not he will finally mature and resolve his inner conflicts. However, we can identify several conflicts and predict whether or not they will be resolved in the end of the book. Pip’s major conflict is his feeling of hate for the position he holds in society. One character that has greatly impacted Pip’s life (and began the conflict) goes by the name Estella. Estella lives at the Satis Estate and encounters Pip for the first time when Miss. Estella constantly makes rude and embarrassing insults. She shows superiority over Pip with Miss Havisham's constant force, telling Estella to break his heart. This action could be related to the fact that Miss Havisham wears her wedding dress; being constantly reminded about her past, possibly her and her fiance's past and how he most likely broke her heart; now she wants Estella to do the same, so someone else feels the pain. Pip falls hopelessly in love with Estella the more he sees her. He experiences “love” for Estella through her appearance. She lives in a enormous house with a rich woman; she is clothed in beautiful luxurious dresses and Pip is attracted to that kind of nature. After all of Estella’s reference to him as “common”, Pip feels embarrassed and wants to change that about his life. Estella hold the catalyst label because she changes the way Pip feel about his life. Pip no longer wants to be common; he wants to be educated and have a job that's higher than being a blacksmith; to conclude, he wants to impress Estella and win her over by turning to a different social class. When Pip came over to Miss Havisham one day he realized that he had fallen for Estella. Pip has a desire to achieve Estella. He most likely fell in love with the mean and proud girl because Pip has only experienced love in that way. His sister, his guardian, yells and hits him thus, he only ever experienced love through hate. Estella calls Pip “boy” which represents the superiority over one another. This causes PIp to reject the love from Joe and Biddy. Pip’s want to pursue Estella causes him to ignore Joe and Biddy.
