Examples Of Conflict In Of Mice And Men

Decent Essays

To them it was a dream but to me it would have been a nightmare. The book took place place in the Great Depression and the two main characters of the book, George and Lennie, set out to make a living for themselves by working on a ranch. The ranch the two boys were working on was only a temporary plan before the got enough money to get there own farm and fulfill their american dream. The book Of Mice and Men by “John Steinbeck” shows three different conflicts racism, loneliness, mortality. The conflict of racism is greatly shown shown within the character crooks the stable buck. Crooks being the only colored character in the book has his own separate sleeping area in the barn. Another example of racism is when the boss brings in the gallon of whiskey on christmas and they beat Crooks. The last example of racism is when Lennie walks into Crooks room and Crooks gets angry: “You go on get outta my room. I ain’t wanted in the bunk house and you ain’t wanted in my room…”(97). Crooks did not like that he was not accepted in the bunk house so he was often very sour about letting others in his room. Crooks was a prime example of racism in the story due to the fact of how he was treated by the other men on the ranch.
Another common conflict in the story is friendship and the lack of it. Candy is one of the loneliest characters in the story since he has worked at the ranch for many years now and he is one of the older worker at the ranch and just does not seem to have to the same
