Courage is when you are willing to do something above your comfort zone to show what you’re made of. In a novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Mildred D. Taylor uses an example of a young girl named Cassie Logan , who is colored, that must stand up for her convictions despite many injustices against her and her family. Cassie proves her courage by protecting her little brother Little Man from getting in big trouble, facing her white enemy Lillian Jean Simms, and being helpful to T.J despite his actions against her family. Cassie made many choices that proved her sassiness and how outspoken she was. She loved her family and had deep respect for the land they lived on. During a time period when the word “equality” meant nothing to those who surrounded her, Cassie shows those who see her actions that she is willing to face the many consequences that lie before her with standing up for her beliefs. Would you be willing to get in trouble for your sibling even though you know you’re gonna get hurt? Cassie Logan was brave. So brave that she wasn’t afraid to step out of line for what she believes is right. She knew she would get in trouble and get hurt, but she did it anyway. Cassie befriended Lillian, learned all of her secrets, and beat her up to make her apologize. Cassie was getting tired, so she threw Lillian’s books on the ground. Cassie took Lillian to the woods after being nice to her, doing things for her, and fought her, pulling her hair until she said she wouldn’t tell her father about it. Courage is hard to have. Especially when there are people judging you. In the book Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry, there are many great acts of courage shown. In the book, Mildred Taylor writes many times when a character has to show courage. Stacey had to show courage when Papa was gone and he had to step up and be the man of the house, when, the night men attacked them, and when he had to help TJ get home and help the Avery’s.
An additional theme heavily shown throughout the book is “people are defined by the choices they make”. Ben left his little sister, Sissy, to die, even though he could have made an effort to save her; because he left her, he now vows not to run from danger or those things which scare him. Furthermore, Cassie promises Sammy that she will find him and, because she makes that promise, she will stop at nothing to be with him again.
Before Cassie Bernall became a Christian, she was an outsider at school. Cassie had written letters to a friend about how she could kill her parents, Brad and Misty Bernall, and end all of her problems. Cassie's parents found the letters, made copies of them, and gave them to the police department. When Cassie got home from school, her parents confronted her. After the confrontation, the Bernall's broke all of Cassie's ties with her friends. The Bernall's enrolled Cassie in a Christian school. Cassie was not allowed to answer the phone and no longer had any privileges. She was allowed to go to a youth group, but that was all she could do. Her parents even went as far to put a monitor on their phone so they could know what she was doing when they weren't home. Cassie had lost all of the trust that she earned from her parents. Misty Bernall didn't go back to work so that she could watch over Cassie. Cassie had her backpack searched, her phone calls monitored, and her bedroom searched. The ability to do something that frightens one, is the definition of courage, and anybody can show courage in any circumstance. Mildred D. Taylor chose Cassie Logan to demonstrate an example of a courageous colored person in the time of segregation. Cassie Logan stands up for her family and what she believes is right, she knows how to survive. Cassie Logan show her courage in many ways; some examples of her being courageous are showing up Lillian Jean, helping foes, and standing up for her beliefs. Cassie proves to be a sassy outspoken 9 year old girl. She is very courageous. Cassie shows her courage by doing what she believes to be right, at the time. She loves her family, like nobody else. Cassie is very respectful, when she needs to be.
When Cassie broke the molding dish she knew she could pick up the pieces, but for the burnt quarter of cotton she could do nothing the cotton was gone and she could do nothing to bring it back. As for T.J., he was in jail in Strawberry, she could not bring him back either. Cassie learned one lesson when she bumped into Lillian Jean. Lillian Jean Simms, Mr.Simms daughter, and Mr.Simms insisted that Cassie must apologize. When Mama, Cassie’s mother, discovered what happened she told her about the difference between respect given out of fear and true respect.
Cassie always saw courage in everyone. She was a young courageous girl herself. Throughout the whole book Cassie Logan stayed Brave, Strong, Courageous and Loyal to everyone.
On page 116 it states, “I’m sorry . . . M-Miz . . . Lillian Jean” (Taylor 116). If Cassie had not done what she had done, things could have gotten a lot worse. Also, she learned a valuable lesson of life.
Because they refused to use the dirty books so she stood up for her brother because of that. In the novel, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry there are several characters who have demonstrated an enormous amount of courage such as Mr.Morrison. Mr.Morrison has shown many acts of courage such as in the book T.j and Stacey get into a fight because of T.j cheating and passing it to stacey to get rid of them but mama caught them and only stacey got whipped. So they reached the wallace store and fought until Mr. Morrison came in picking them off of eachother with the white men upset. Another act that Mr. Morrison had done was as papa, stacey, and Mr. Morrison where heading back from vicksburg they stopped because a wheel had popped off from the wagon and they would have to fix it and get of the road first. Well Cassie Logan stood up for her little brother, Little man when he got in trouble. Cassie got whipped because she didn’t want Little Man to get in trouble to after he said he didn’t want his book if it was dirty so Cassie tried to stand up for him. Cassie showed courage by using her actions like she showed she didn’t want the book if Little Man couldn’t have one. On page 27 Cassie said, “I started slowing toward my desk, but as the hickory stick sliced the tense air, I turned back around. ‘Mis Crocker,’ I said, ‘I don’t want my book neither.”
Everyday you should show courage because every time you show courage, it makes someone happy, and when you show courage you are showing strength and bravery. Throughout the book, Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry, by Mildred D. Taylor, Stacey showed lots of courage when he dug a trench 12 feet wide, and crashed a bus that covered them in mud and dirt every morning for the children’s entertainment, and when he helped his friend that left him in the dust and didn’t do anything for him. Stacey was a great character throughout the book, and showed the most courage in Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry. He was the oldest Logan of the children, and he did a lot of things for others around him.
She stood up for herself and her mom for how T.J. set them up for getting her momma fired. He was angry and wanted revenge for failing a quiz that he tried to cheat on. Mamma was fired and kicked out of the school. They thought that T.J. was the reason for this because he cheated on a test… and he is and was. She had to stand up for the Logans and Her Mamma. ¨Ah stop lying T.J.,¨ I said testily. ¨Don nobody believe you¨.Well, I should have known you would not, Cassie. You never liked me no way¨ ¨Well, anyway, that's the truth,¨ Cassie agreed. She is Very courageous for her family and her self and stands tall for The family not just
