“Real courage is when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.” Atticus Finch. This quote is proved to be true in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee as it demonstrates the true definition of courage. The book takes you along the journey of young girl, Scout Finch, during a time where colored people are thought less of. She experiences this first hand as her father, Atticus Finch, has been assigned to defend a colored man who has been accused of raping a white female. Scout along with her elder brother Jem, learn the definition of courage through some of the characters and how they act to the events that occur before and after the trial. In Harper Lee’s, To Kill a Mockingbird, many characters are great examples of trusting yourself when all odds are stacked against you. Throughout the novel the characters that display courage are Atticus Finch, Tom Robinson and Boo Radley.
The first example of a character displaying the qualities of courage is Atticus Finch. Atticus displays the qualities of courage in all facets of the novel but the first instance was when he accepted the case to defend Tom Robinson. After Scout had heard about her father defending a colored man, she wanted to know why he had taken the case. While talking to Atticus, Scout was intrigued as to why he accepted this case within the circumstances that he was defending a black man against a white woman. Atticus claimed, “Simply
Courage isn’t always bravery. Sometimes courage goes unseen. To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, displays different types of courage. It is written from a point of view of a child whose name is Scout growing up in a Southern town with her brother Jem. Their father, Atticus Finch, is defending an African American man named Tom Robinson who is accused of raping Mayella Ewell. The Finches mysterious neighbor in Maycomb County, Arthur Radley, whom the children have never seen until Halloween night, adds to the rising tensions in the town. The book teaches many lessons and sheds light on some of the problems we still have today. One of the lessons it teaches is courage. Courage is standing up for what is right, just like Atticus,
“It is curious that physical courage should be so common in the world and moral courage so rare.” (Mark Twain) In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee there are not many characters that show moral courage. One particular character that shows moral courage is Atticus Finch. This character always does what he believes is right. Atticus shows courage not by being aggressive or killing, but by standing up for what he believed in a sophisticated and determined way. Atticus whose moral courage is
Undeniably, the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is an interesting yet enlightening read about the discrimination and unfairness African Americans faced in the 1930s through the eyes of a child. There are numerous passages throughout the novel that are life lessons for not just the characters in the story, but the readers. Without a doubt, one life lesson that is displayed in the story is the empathy shown by Atticus. The life lesson of personal integrity is also a major one in the story, as well as persistence. Lastly, the theme of courage is significant and the life lesson of the mockingbird in the story has a deeper meaning than what might appear to readers. Overall, the life lessons of empathy, personal integrity, persistence,
Our world suffers with many issues such as racism, sexism, hate and prejudice, and society needs people that are strong enough to take a stand. In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, courage is displayed in several different forms, especially through three courageous characters. Lee introduces the concept of honorable courage through Mrs. Dubose, a woman who demonstrates that real courage comes from within. Another brave character in the novel is Tom Robinson. He shows everyone how difficult it is for a black man to be both honest and kind no matter the situation. The most courageous person would be Atticus Finch. Atticus is an important character that fits into his own definition of what "real courage" is and demonstrates it in numerous ways throughout the novel, as he goes against most people’s beliefs in order to do what he believes is morally right. Through these three brave characters, Lee tries to reshape people's stereotypical view of courage.
Courage, as defined by Collins Dictionary, is “the quality shown by someone who decides to do something difficult or dangerous, even though they may be afraid”. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee has created many characters who exhibit such courage, even in the face of adversity, and develops this into a major theme. Atticus Finch, Arthur Radley, and other members of the Finch household and Maycomb community, display amazing courage in the things they say, but more importantly in the way they act. These characters all contribute to the novel’s theme of showing courage through adversity.
anyone else agree with that statement? Everyone is born with true bravery but it’s up to them if they will show it and a couple did. For example Atticus Finch and Martin Luther king jr, they both stood up for what they believe in and what was right. They never backed down they had the confidence to stand up and they did, stood tall and brave. Atticus Finch stood up for Tom Robinson. Martin Luther King Jr stood up for black rights. Rosa Parks, a very courageous woman in the civil rights. Tom Robinson was also a brave person. He shows courage on the witness stand. These people showed great courage because they never backed down they did what was right and what they believed in.
Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird, courage is represented many times. Atticus represents courage when he takes the Tom Robinson case, stands up to Bob Ewell, and when he shoots Tim Johnson. Scout represents courage when she stands up for Walter, punches cousin Francis, and when she breaks up the mob. Boo Radley represents courage when he kills Bob Ewell, saves Scout and Jem, and strokes Jem. Courage is still very important because if we don’t have courage, then we won’t take risks. If we don’t take risks, then we won’t achieve
In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, courage can be found in every chapter and on almost every page of this book. Virtually every character in this book posses courageous qualities. In this novel, the Finches' are just a few of the people who endure harsh blows over about a three year period. However, each and every one of them step up to the plate with courage ready to strike. Atticus especially shows courage when he agrees to defend Tom Robinson. Atticus did not have to take this case, and everything that accompanies it. However, Atticus wanted to prove that being prejudice and racist is undoubtfully wrong. To try and convey this message was a difficult take to preform, but Atticus wanted the people of Maycomb to understand why he felt this way. Another charater who clearly shows courage is Boo Radley. Boo Radley was the person who killed Bob Ewell. Boo Radley did this because Bob Ewell was trying to kill Jem and Scout. Boo Radley, beyond a shadow of doubt, walked into that situation
One example of a hero from To Kill a Mockingbird is Atticus Finch, the father of the protagonist, Scout. One example of Atticus’s heroism is when he shows courage by defending a black man, Tom Robinson, who was accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. This shows courage because no one else wanted to defend Tom, and he knew he was going to lose. Atticus says real courage is, “When you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.” This quote illustrates the idea because Atticus knows he will not win the Tom Robinson case, but he shows courage by seeing it through all of the way to the end. Another example of Atticus being a hero is that he always respects everyone. He does not care what people look like, he justs respects them. No one believes Tom is innocent at first just because he is black, but Atticus respects him and trusts him. Also, when he is cross-examining Mayella at the trial he shows respect for her by calling her “ma’am” and “Miss Mayella.” Dill says, “Well, Mr. Finch didn't act that way to Mayella and old man Ewell when he cross-examined them. The way that man called him 'boy' all the time an' sneered at him, an' looked around at the jury every time he answered-." This quote shows Atticus is a polite and respectful gentleman because even though he was cross-examining Mayella and Mr. Ewell, he was considerate. Atticus is just one of many heroes in To Kill a Mockingbird, but he is a major one.
"Courage isn't an absence of fear. It's doing what you are afraid to do. It's having the power to let go of the familiar and forge ahead into new territory." ~John Maxwell. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout (Jean Louise Finch), Jem (Jeremy Atticus Finch), and Atticus Finch display acts of valor that contribute, and in some cases encourage their rectitude. Harper Lee demonstrates that acting courageously can lead to an improved, sustained, or newly developed personal integrity.
Courage can be defined in different ways as shown by Anne Sexton’s “Courage” poem and Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird. Sexton would say courage comes in small acts and in these small acts of courage are what teaches people how to find the strength within themselves to accept things the way they are. Atticus Finch, one of the main characters in the novel, would argue that courage is perseverance and fighting till the end even though the battle may have already been lost. This novel takes place around the 1930s, and is told through the eyes of Scout Finch. From her, one might learn about her father, Atticus Finch, an attorney who hopelessly aims to prove the innocence of a black man wrongly accused of rape. Both definitions of courage can be found in three characters in the novel; Atticus’ determination to help Robinson, Scout’s ability to conceal her emotions, and Mrs. Dubose’s perseverance to fight till the end.
To Kill a Mockingbird In the 1930s it was slightly different than it is today. The 1930s had nasty flaws including sexism and very bad judgement but especially racism. And this book shows both sides of racism who was for it and who was against it. This will mainly show the courage from characters that aren't for racism. All these characters show their courage through their actions words and that shows that courage is demonstrated throughout the story by the characters.
English Final Exam Today in our world, there seems to be a high amount of cruelty. However, there are also many situations where people still show courage. Courage is strength. Courage is honesty. Courage is standing one’s ground no matter what. Courage is standing up for others. In Harper Lee’s classic novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout and Jem Finch, along with their father Atticus, live in Maycomb County, a small, mainly racist town in Alabama during the Great Depression. The Finch family’s neighbor, Mrs. Dubose, and Atticus display acts of personal courage in the story. Specifically, Mrs. Dubose displays courage in her honesty and strength, and Atticus displays courage in his responses to racism based threats and keeping others safe.
In our class, we were tasked to read the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, as well as watch the documentary Eyes on the Prize, where we witnessed the death of Emmett Till and the uprising it caused. We read and listened to the I Have a Dream Speech by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The main focus of this unit was the book To Kill a Mockingbird, where Harper Lee writes about the story of two children living in Maycomb during the time of the Great Depression. Maycomb is a city in Alabama where the people who live there demonstrate huge prejudice towards black people. Throughout the story, the children learn valuable lessons which help them mature from children to young adults.
