Did you know that even a good man could have an evil side? The renowned author, William Shakespeare, wrote a drama entitled “Macbeth” which took place in Scotland. In the play, Macbeth had a strong desire to become king. He even went to extremes of killing Duncan, Banquo and Macduff’s family to reach his goal. A common theme found in the play is Good vs. Evil. This theme is evident through the characters Macbeth, Lady Macbeth and Banquo.
One example of good vs. evil is the three witches and the important roles they play in Macbeth. These deceiving sisters are very evil and are also known as the “weird sisters” In Macbeth (Act I scn i, 10-11) The witches say “Fair is foul, and foul is fair hover through the fog and filthy air.” The three witches

evil can be seen by examining Macbeth’s character. Throughout the drama, Macbeth is referred to as a brave, well-respected nobleman of Scotland, who is taken down the path of destruction by the prophecies of the three witches mentioned earlier. As mentioned, the witches told him he would soon be the king of Scotland. In an attempt to fulfill the witches’ prophecies, Macbeth hires two murders and yells them about his plan, which will only work if they kill Banquo and anyone that is with him, even if it’s his son Fleance. (Act iii scn I ln 131- 135) says “The moment on ‘t: for ‘t must be done tonight…Fleance his son, that keeps him company.” His ambition to become king prompted him to take evil action. In a different view, Lady Macbeth points out the good in her husband after receiving a letter from Macbeth informing her of his new promotion to Throne of Cawdor. (Act I scn v ln 15, 16) “Glamis thou art, and Cawdor, and shalt be what thou art promised. Yet I do fear thy nature. It is too full o' th' milk of human kindness.” In a simpler translation, Lady Macbeth is pointing out the good in Macbeth and saying that his kindness causes her to question his ability to fight for the throne. It is obvious that Macbeth is power hungry and will do evil to get his way, but still has a good side to …show more content…
Macbeth knew Banquo would be suspicious of Duncan’s murder, so he killed him too. (Act iii scn iv ln 51, 52) “Thou canst not say I did it. Never shake there gory locks at me.” Consequently, Banquo’s ghost appears at a banquet held by Macbeth and haunts him, because he is delusional and paranoid about what he has done. He lashes out at the ghost and tells the ghost, that it cannot blame him for the death of Banquo. (Act I scn iii ln 124, 125) “The instruments, to win us to our harm, win us with honest triles, to betrays in deepest consequence.” In other words, Banquo is telling Macbeth that he should be cautious because the witches predictions could be dark and lead to evil. Overall, the murder of Banquo at the hands of Macbeth is a great example of the evil throughout the story and led to Banquo’s warning of the witches’
Although some may argue that Macbeth is responsible for King Duncan's death because he was the one to murder him, Banquo is actually the one to blame because he could have stopped it from happening. From the second the witches told the men their fortune and the prophecies came true, Banquo knew that things would end poorly, "All’s well. I dreamt last night of the three weird sisters: To you they have showed some truth." (Act 2, Scene 1). Why would Banquo be dreaming about the witches and wondering if Macbeth was alright unless he was questioning how Macbeth received the witches' predictions? As one of King Duncan's most trusted men, Banquo should have notified the King of the witches and the fortunes they told. Truth be told, one can't help but wonder if Banquo wanted to see
There is a constant war waging between good and evil in everyday life. It may be a war between two fractions that feel they are both in the right or an internal battle of good and evil. In William Shakespeare’s Macbeth the titular character and his wife are battling against the true nature of themselves and in each other. Although they are known and seen by others as virtuous, their unsatisfactory greed and ambition lead both characters to become immoral.
This time due to a cowardly action committed out of selfish fear. It is no surprise to me that Banquo’s ghost haunts Macbeth at this table since Macbeth called for two murders to kill him and his son. Banquo’s ghost appearing shows that Macbeth felt guilt and that he was not the completely heartless monster that he appeared to become. When Banquo's bloody ghost sits at the table with the lords, Macbeth tries to believe that he did not kill banquo. “ Thou canst not say I did it. Never shake Thy gory locks at me.” (III,iv,53-54). Macbeth’s episode with Banquo’s ghost reveals how the quest for power had driven his mind into pure insanity. This powerful hallucination driven from the little heart left in Macbeth proved to all the lords that Macbeth’s mind was gone, and that he was not fit to
Evil was a recurring theme throughout the tragedy of Macbeth. Early on, readers learned the evil that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth could carry out as a team. Lady Macbeth was one of the most evil characters in Macbeth; she was filled with ambition, revenge, energy, and a dark evil. All of Lady Macbeth’s
As works of literature mature, the line between good and bad begins to become unclear. With Shakespeare’s works especially, things are usually not what they initially seem; a character may reveal to be the protagonist, antagonist, or even an anti-hero. A character may take actions that border on the antagonistic side, but still be the protagonist in which the audience is emotionally, though not always ethically, invested in. An anti-hero can be viewed simply as a protagonist who lies somewhere on the spectrum of villain and hero; never quite touching each end. In his play, Macbeth, Shakespeare makes it clear that Macbeth is really an anti-hero through his changing public appearance, his encounters with the witches, and his feelings concerning his own actions.
In William Shakespeare’s play ‘Macbeth,' he shows us a world without compassion and mercy. Macbeth is a story about a Scottish army general who is visited by three witches after winning a paramount battle in a war against the Netherlands and England. The witches had given him , and a dear friend of his, Scottish general Banquo a prophecy stating Macbeth would become Thane of Cawdor and the King of Scotland and the told Banquo his Son’s would become Kings but not him. This prophecy can be seen as a catalyst to the lack of compassion and mercy portrayed in the world of Macbeth. Examples of such instances and behaviors are throughout the book.
The bell invites me. Hear it not, Duncan, for it is a knell that summons thee to heaven or hell."(2.1.62-64). The murder of King Duncan was the start of the murderous cruel loophole Macbeth fell into. Macbeth thinks Banquo and his son is a threat as the prophecies were Banquo to be a father to a king, Macbeth hired men to kill Banquo and his son but Banquo's son was able to flee. Macbeth sees Banquo's ghost at the dinner table, and the guilt starts to haunt him as explained in the quote "Avaunt, and quit my sight! Let the earth hide thee.Thy bones are marrowless, thy blood is cold. Thou hast no speculation in those eyes which thou dost glare with!(3.4.93-96). The witches give Macbeth one last prophecy which is to watch out for
In this essay I will look at the ways that Shakespeare has contrasted evil with good in his play Macbeth. The play revolves around the bad and wicked qualities in human nature, but Shakespeare also contrasts this evil with the power of good. This contrast between good and evil is a recurring theme throughout Macbeth.
In this essay I shall be looking at the way evil is portrayed in Shakespeare's play, Macbeth. I will be concentrating on the characters in the play that contribute to the evil themes of the play. It is clear from the start of the play that the witches are the main source of evil.
Good and evil are symbolized by light and darkness in the play Macbeth, by William Shakespeare. When there is peace and good, Shakespeare mentions light; whether if it is the sun shining brightly or merely a candle giving light. On the other hand, when there is evil and disorder, he mentions darkness; a shadow or a horrible thunderstorm. Witches are known for evil, chaos, and conflict. Since Witches are known to be evil, whenever they appear, the weather is usually horrible. Shakespeare utilizes light and darkness in order to portray when good or evil will take place.
“At the heart of William Shakespeare's Macbeth is an examination of the nature of evil and it's many faces and facets”(Cathell 119). The principal evil characters in the play, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, are both evil, but the manifestation of evil is different in each.
First off, Macbeth’s ambition leads him to fall into paranoia. It drives him mad, and makes him hallucinate. Macbeth kills so many men seamlessly but after the murder of Banquo he begins to go crazy. “Macbeth does murder sleep…Macbeth shall sleep no more.”(II.II). When he sleeps he sees Banquo and he cannot deal with the guilt. He even began to have visions of Banquo’s ghost “If thou canst nod, speak too. /if charnel-houses and our graves must send/those that we bury back, our monuments/shall be the maws of kites.”(III.IV) Not only does he ask the murderers twice if Banquo is dead but he also becomes paranoid because Fleance got away. In Act 3 scene 4, Macbeth as king holds a feast with all his friends. During this feast he begins to hallucinate, he sees Banquo’s ghost. Lady
Good vs. Evil is a common theme in the play Macbeth. All of the characters are caught up in the battle between what is good and what is not. Macbeth makes a shift in his character from being good to turning evil. Lady Macbeth remains evil the whole time and tries to control Macbeth. The struggles that Lady Macbeth and Macbeth face exemplify the battle of good v. evil.
Macbeth is without a doubt a play about evil. The play revolves around the bad and wicked qualities in human nature, but Shakespeare also contrasts this evil with the power of good. In this essay I will explore the ways in which Shakespeare contrasted good and evil in Macbeth.
Great evil is demonstrated in Macbeth’s character due to his vicious ambition and ruthless attitude. Macbeth was able to murder such a generous person, especially someone that gave you many blessings so it can be inferred that he is capable of much worse. In fact, he later exclaims “That I did kill them” claiming to have killed the men who “killed” Duncan (2.3.104). Macbeth blames two innocent men for his immoral actions, yet it is once again seen as a decision made by his wife or as a way to protect her. The fact that Macbeth easily shrugs off his actions and pretends he has no knowledge of the event depicts an evil side of him that is coming out into the light.
