Macbeth and Fidel Castro: Two Leaders Blinded by Greed
Ambition is in all of us, it’s human nature and we can not change that. But, ambition affects all humans differently. In some situations, ambition becomes overpowering, and turns to greed. But what is greed? “Greed (or avarice, cupidity, or covetousness) is the excessive desire for more than is needed or deserved, not for the greater good but for one’s own selfish interest” (Burton 1). People have wants and desires, but as individuals we need to learn to be satisfied with what we have. Drive is important to have but too much can become dangerous. Uncontrolled greed can become especially dangerous in a powerful leaders, resulting in the possibility of a dictatorship. Both Macbeth and Fidel

Once Lady Macbeth was made aware of the witches’ prophecy, her main purpose and drive was to encourage Macbeth to commit the act of murdering Duncan. This was the only avenue that would lead Macbeth to becoming king and Lady Macbeth, to becoming queen, something they both strongly desired. Lady Macbeth creates an elaborate plan to kill Duncan, which would secure the spot for her and her king.
Banquo was also was given a prophecy that his son, Fleance, would someday become king. After Macbeth kills Duncan, he was worried that Banquo was starting to suspect that he was the murderer, not the guards. Macbeth hired people to kill Banquo and Fleance after finding this information out, but Fleance was able to get away. After an extreme wave of guilt is thrown over Macbeth for the death of Banquo, he sees his ghost at the coronation, and later on reveals that he murdered Duncan.
Fidel Castro was a Cuban dictator born near Biran, Cuba, in 1926. Castro began a campaign in 1958 that led to him and his followers to overthrow the Cuban dictator, Fulgencio Batista. Ambition is often the driving force in one’s life. It can have an extremely dominant impact on not only yourself, but also many people in your surroundings. You have the ability to control if the outcomes either have a lasting negative or positive effect. When a goal requires determination and hard work to complete, personal morals often take a back seat to the aspiration of accomplishing the goal. They say greed is the root of all evil. This is especially shown in Macbeth, the desire of power becomes an apparent symbol throughout the play. How does a man loyal to the king turn so easily from the slight temptation of the crown. After the murder of Duncan Macbeth is seen picturing an imaginary dagger, “Is this a dagger which I see before me,/ The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee.” (2.1.33-34 Macbeth) Macbeth isn’t even seen remorseful for the cruel deed he just commits; to a man who he swore an oath of loyalty to. Greed and ambition are traits that everyone has. Depending on how much of that greed and ambition the person has will determine their outcome. In life everyone wants power, which would turn them to be greedy. Power is like a drug the more power someone receives, the more they want and they will do anything to get more. Shakespeare’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth” highlights how Macbeth wanted to become king so bad, that he would do anything to achieve it. However, when he got want he wanted the whole time it was normal to him. Macbeth started out loyal to his king but when he heard the prophecy it turned him into a monster that everyone tried to slay.
Within every human being, there is an underlying motive that puts them on the hunt for greatness, power, and achievement- all to fulfill their ideal self-image, which in turn grants them eternal happiness. This same motive is notorious for corrupting the mind’s of those who will stop at nothing to satisfy their thirst for power, consuming them from the inside and ready to take control of their minds, leading them to their own destruction. This is known as ambition; a parasite that can either build up or shatter a person completely. In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, ambition is one of the major themes in which the story revolves around as it follows the character Macbeth through his journey to fulfill his prophecy gaven to him by the three witches; he is to become the Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor, and most importantly, the King of Scotland. With him is his companion and fellow general of the Scottish army, Banquo, who is also given a prophecy, in which he is to become a father to many kings, however not become one himself. Where the two characters’ roads diverge, however, is in their reaction to the information received. Macbeth steers onto an aggressive path, while Banquo remains passive. This is evident through their differences in skepticism, loyalty, and patience, where their particular degree of ambition is tested. In the beginning of the play, the witches make three prophecies. First, that Macbeth will become the Thane of Cawdor. The second part of the prophecy is that Macbeth will become King. The third prophecy being that Banquo will be father to future kings. When Macbeth first hears the prophecy, Duncan holds the position as king. King duncan is also a very loved king by his people. Macbeth and Duncan even have a good relationship. Macbeth is Duncan’s greatest war hero and because of Macbeth’s great success in battle, Duncan rewards him by promoting him to the position of Thane of Cawdor. With this promotion, Macbeth realizes that the witches first prophecy was true. With this realization, Macbeth’s head begins to fill with thoughts of killing King Duncan to speed up the process so that he can become king. People are selfish beings. Many of us would tend to find a shortcut to not run, finds ways to not get caught doing bad things, or finding ways to put the blame on one another. Everybody wants to achieve their dreams even if it affects someone everyone around them. Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth informs us how fast a “innocent flower” like person can turn into megalomaniac just to obtain power for themselves (i.v.56-57). Macbeth the main character who goes from War Hero to tyrant demonstrates how obtaining power can corrupt a person’s mind just to fulfill their desires.
Ambition is not a concept exclusive to a certain time period or era, William Shakespeare exhibits a vast amount of ambition in his works. Cassandra Nelson states that ambition can be, “coupled variously with cruelty, caprice, and overconfidence”(Nelson) this shows that many in order to have personal gains will possess wreckless thinking and cruelty. In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the protagonist, Macbeth,is overwhelmed with his stature in his current society, and has no regards on how his position ascends.
Salvador Dali once said, “Intelligence without ambition is a bird without wings”. This is can related to Macbeth. However, in Macbeth’s case ambition without good supporters is like giving a dagger to a murderer, literally. Macbeth was just a normal royal until he was given the prophecy that he would soon be king, even though the King was still alive. Macbeth wanted to be king, but he knew that with the current king still alive and with heirs that it would be a long time before he gained the title of king.
Ambition is often the driving force in one's life. It is supposed to be the motivating factor that drives one towards success. But one should be careful what they wish for, because that power might be exactly what causes their downfall. In the book Macbeth the major theme of the story is that there is a blind ambition that is bad and will only result in destruction.
Power Hungry In William Shakespeare’s tragedy, Macbeth, the play describes the role greed plays in an individual's natural struggle for a sense of power. Greed is the cause of almost all violence and injustice in the world, it is the best motivator known to man. Down to the core, a human is just trying to survive and when it comes to them and another, a human will almost always choose themself because of greed. Greed is almost like survival with a twist of overkill, literally for Macbeth.
William Shakespeare’s Macbeth is about a general who is told a prophecy that leads him down a path of murder and insanity. This prophecy tells him he will be king, which gives him ambition to fulfill his fortune. This leads him down the wrong path, however.
