Macbeth and Fidel Castro: Two Leaders Blinded by Greed
Ambition is in all of us, it’s human nature and we can not change that. But, ambition affects all humans differently. In some situations, ambition becomes overpowering, and turns to greed. But what is greed? “Greed (or avarice, cupidity, or covetousness) is the excessive desire for more than is needed or deserved, not for the greater good but for one’s own selfish interest” (Burton 1). People have wants and desires, but as individuals we need to learn to be satisfied with what we have. Drive is important to have but too much can become dangerous. Once Lady Macbeth was made aware of the witches’ prophecy, her main purpose and drive was to encourage Macbeth to commit the act of murdering Duncan. This was the only avenue that would lead Macbeth to becoming king and Lady Macbeth, to becoming queen, something they both strongly desired. Lady Macbeth creates an elaborate plan to kill Duncan, which would secure the spot for her and her king.
Banquo was also was given a prophecy that his son, Fleance, would someday become king. After Macbeth kills Duncan, he was worried that Banquo was starting to suspect that he was the murderer, not the guards. Macbeth hired people to kill Banquo and Fleance after finding this information out, but Fleance was able to get away. After an extreme wave of guilt is thrown over Macbeth for the death of Banquo, he sees his ghost at the coronation, and later on reveals that he murdered Duncan.
Fidel Castro was a Cuban dictator born near Biran, Cuba, in 1926. Castro began a campaign in 1958 that led to him and his followers to overthrow the Cuban dictator, Fulgencio Batista. Once Castro came to power, he wanted to expand the country, which lead to “tension between the U.S. and Cuba in 1962, which resulted in the Cuban missile crisis” (Fidel Castro Biography
