In shakespeare novel, Hamlet is supposed to be faking insanity all along, but in my point of view, at some point he might’ve really taken his role to serious. Insanity, according to the dictionary means: “a permanent disorder of the mind.” I don't think Hamlet had a permanent disease of the mind because he knew what he was doing all along and he planned things the way he wanted to be. In the events of the play, Hamlet’s father dies, and then his mother marries his uncle within a few weeks of his father’s death, and his uncle was for Hamlet the main suspect of the death of his father, it is hard for him to maintain himself sane after that, and then happening to see the ghost of your father. That I think is something that can drive people crazy. Hamlet main goal I would say, is keeping himself sane but making everyone think that he is crazy. …show more content…
Her father tells her to stay away from Hamlet, who she has fallen in love with. Hamlet has warned her earlier that whatever he tells her in the future will not be true but, when he tells her he does not intent to be with her it starts the beginning of her madness.
When Ophelia returns all his letters and gifts he tells her that he has never loved her and that she should “get thyself to a nunnery.” This is one example of his mood swings and examples of his madness throughout the play. Then after all this her father, Polinous, is murdered by Hamlet. The Hamlet is sent away to England as a punishment and all of this events cause Ophelia a lot of stress and it is eventually the reason why she goes insane.
In the final scene Hamlet dies, but before he does he leaves some important words, “As thou'rt a man, Give me the cup! Let go! By heaven, I'll ha't. Things standin thus unknow, shall I leave behind me! If thou didst ever hold me in thy heart, Absent thee from felicity awhile,
Many people have seen Hamlet as a play about uncertainty and about Hamlet's failure to act appropriately. It is very interesting to consider that the play shows many uncertainties that lives are built upon, or how many unknown quantities are taken for granted when people act or when they evaluate one another's actions. Hamlet is an especially intriguing production, both on the set and on the screen because of its uniqueness to be different from what most people expect to be in a revenge themed play. Hamlet's cynicism and insane like behavior cause him to seem indecisive, but in reality he is always judging and contemplating his actions in the back of his mind in order to seek revenge for the murder of
Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, is about a young prince who wants revenge when he learns about the murder of his father. As the play begins, Hamlet’s character appears to be a normal, sane person. Moving through the acts Hamlet’s personality changes from normal to depressed. There are hints of insanity that try to convince people Hamlet is “mad”. Others might say that Hamlet is faking madness to pursue his goal of revenge. First, he sees a “ghost” that tells Hamlet who killed his father and married his mother. Was this a dream or was this real? Second, Hamlet kills more than one person to avenge his father’s death. Where these accidents or intentional? “Insanity: a legal term for mental illness of such degree
Over the course of Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet, Hamlet begins to act strange. He not only acts strange, but he begins to act like a madman. Therefore, many question his sanity after reading the play. There are many examples and hints throughout the play that leads one to believe that Hamlet has slowly gone mad after losing his father. It is noticeable that Hamlet is mad when he enters Ophelia’s room, sees the Ghost, and talks to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.
One of the recurring themes in Shakespeare’s Hamlet is Hamlet’s unwillingness or rather inability to act and make decisions when necessary. Time and time again, he is given the chance to exact his revenge for his slain father and murder his uncle. Yet every time he comes up with an excuse as to not have to act. Granted he takes some action to prove that it was in fact his uncle that killed his father, however, he goes no farther than that. Hamlet’s inability to fulfill his destiny and take out his revenge that he wants shows insanity. Hamlet is a man who’s father passed away, his mother married his uncle, and he later finds out that it was his uncle, his mother’s new husband, who killed his father, this would cause serious mental issues in any man. Even though Hamlet may have feigned insanity, Hamlet is insane because he is clinically depressed, he shows signs of being bipolar and he has hallucinations. Eventually even in his insanity he is left no other choice but to kill Claudius, his uncle, however until then his depression, bipolar disorder, hallucinations, and overall insanity keep him from exacting his revenge.
Insanity can be defined as a mental illness that causes a person to have difficulty distinguishing fantasy from reality. Whether Shakespeare’s Hamlet was insane or feigning insanity is a controversial topic. Gregory Shafer argues that Hamlet is not insane and that he uses insanity or madness for his own political purposes (42). In William Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet, Prince Hamlet’s circumstances force him to seek revenge for the murder of his father King Hamlet. He creates a plan that he believes will give him an opportunity to kill Claudius, and the main part of this plan involves him faking insanity. Further and further into the book, his actions of a madman become more believable. However through his thoughts and actions it is clear that he is not truly insane, and his is only acting in this way in order to reach is ultimate goal of revenge.

Hamlet is a young man who has become crazy from his trials and tribulations in life. He lost his father due to his uncle murdering them and then had to watch his mother marry the killer. Hamlets insanity can be demonstrated by his crude language and disregard for the well being of his mother. It can also be shown by his depression, which causes him to second guess everything including his life and finally his love, Ophelia helps to justify his absurdness by acting as a mirror. His foolish behavior worries many in the kingdom and creates a hostile and paranoid environment for those around. While some in the castle may believe that Hamlet is putting on an act, he proves that he is mad through his violet actions, his mental health and Ophelia.

Hamlet can be best described as a compelling story of revelation, revenge, and tragedy. If a reader looks at the main situation through Hamlet's point of view, it would be easier to understand and relate to the storyline. Due to the events that occurred at the beginning of the story, I believe that Hamlet feigns madness because he is determined and smart enough to avenge his father's death by executing a secret plan for murdering Claudius, his father's brother. There are several ways that Hamlet pretends to be insane in the play. The "madness" begins in Act I when he has significant encounters with his father's ghost.
Insanity Is Relative After reading Shakespeare ’s play Hamlet, the reader might come across the question as to whether the main character, Hamlet, is faking insanity and using it to plot against his Uncle Claudius or if Hamlet is actually declining into madness. Although there is in-text evidence for each, I believe that Hamlet is faking his insanity the majority of the play. There might be little instances that show that he actually is going insane, but I still believe that even if there is, he is completely covering them up by his absurd use of putting on an act of pretending to be mad.
In Hamlet by William Shakespeare, Hamlet’s sanity is questionable throughout the play. Insanity is defined as the “unsoundness of mind or lack of the ability to understand” (Merriam-Webster). In the play, Hamlet’s father, King Hamlet, is murdered by Claudius, Hamlet’s uncle, in secrecy. To make matter’s worse, Claudius then continues on to get married in an inscetuous relationship with Hamlet’s mother, the queen. Emotions are heightened when Hamlet then see’s a ghost that claim’s to be King Hamlet. The Ghost tells Hamlet that Claudius is the murderer and that Hamlet must seek revenge for his father’s death. In order to protect himself of being accused for treason, Hamlet decides he will act insane as an

Hamlet says to Horatio “Here,as before, never, so help you mercy, how strange or odd soe’er I bear myself—As I perchance hereafter shall think meet to put an antic disposition on”(I.V.89-192). In this quote Hamlet is letting Horatio know that he is going to feign madness in order to get revenge for his father’s death.

Shakespeare's Hamlet significantly demonstrates the consequences of dissimulating, in a way of dishonesty, but is Hamlet's madness simulated or real? This question is often left unanswered among the fans of Shakespeare's Hamlet. The idea of a character impersonating the concept or motif of insanity is not foreign to great literary works in modern days although many authors in ancient time use it to convey the sanity of the humor. There is much evidence in the play of Shakespeare's Hamlet, which Hamlet deliberately feigned fits of madness to confuse and plan to disconcert the king until he reveals his secret that he is responsible for Hamlet's father murder. However, the majority of the professors continue to argue that Hamlet's anti-decomposition is purely innocent and that he is not pretending. Nevertheless, with the similar saying of “One bad apple spoils the whole bunch”, in Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Hamlet: Prince of Denmark, Hamlet’s fatal flaw of
