Who we are as individuals is well beyond the pigment of our skin, the color of our eyes and hair, or with what hand we write. The world we live in and those around us shape who we are and how we react to events in our daily lives, this is the human condition and though we like to believe we are not at all conditioned to react in certain ways, it is inevitable. Throughout high school we read literature that is oftentimes seen as mundane. However, it is frequently overlooked that this literature reminds us that we are all human, something many seem to forget when they judge others for their choices in life. Much like Jenny Craig, Company Man demonstrates the fear we have for anything but what we consider perfect and the risks we are willing to take to reach our goal of perfection. Company Man tells the story of a man married more to his job than to his family leaving his children without a father and his wife without a husband when he dies of a heart attack after overworking himself. The company man worked hard out of the fear that he would disappoint his family and appear inferior in the workplace resulting in his death.. Macbeth from Macbeth craves the finer things in life, including the entire kingdom and stops at nothing to get what he wants. Although his wife, Lady Macbeth,is afraid of the man her husband becomes, she stands by him until she realizes she can’t bare to see him lose everything he killed for and in turn kills herself. As humans, we crave social acceptance and the idea of eternal freedom to be who we are. Winston in 1984 searches desperately for the truth of how Oceania was before the citizens were forced to follow a mindless daily schedule and listen to every command a telescreen gives. Out of the fear of being controlled forever with more reason than it's just how it is, Winston pushes to find the limits of the government’s control. During this time he meets Julia whose only fear is to go without the touch of a man to make her feel important. In The Jacket we are presented with the issue of not being accepted by those around us, much like in Jenny Craig. In this case, a little boy fears being ridiculed not only for his ethnicity but for the jacket he wears that proudly displays his country’s flag. As we all know, it is impossible to change who we are or where we are from et this young boy, much like the adults in Jenny Craig desire the acceptance of others even if it means declaring one’s true self as
