Let us first understand what real love and obsession is? True love isn't about passion or lust or attraction or common interests and personalities. It's something altogether different. It's about learning to complement each other, learning to grow with each other. It's about doing love-things, even when you don't feel like it, even when life drives you to insanity, even if you think you've lost love. It's about commitment and perseverance and thinking and feeling and happiness. – Tim King (from "Love through the Eyes of an Idiot"). Real love can be seen in relationship between Joe with Pip; Joe and Biddy; Pip and Herbert pocket; Wemmick and aged parents; Pip and …show more content…
And when you're well enough to go out for a ride - what larks!”[1] To Joe, nothing has changed although other characters in the novel grow in their love; Joe's love has been the same throughout, as he shows through his self-sacrifice and care of Pip. Another example of real love is when Magwitch, a convict who escaped the prison and threatens Pip in the marshes for food and file. After he escaped London he became rich in Australia. Later Pip got great expectations from a benefactor to become a gentle man by wisely using money in education and livings. Magwitch visited Pip and told him that he was his benefactor as Pip helped him with food and file to which Magwitch repaid him. This was indeed a real love and fatherly love of Magwitch towards Pip and he taught Pip to love unconditionally. Mr. Joe and Biddy is another example of true love. They shared common feelings and looked after each other as Biddy was very caring and pleasant women. They had a son, little Pip. Also unconditional love is seen between Wemmick and his aged parent. Also Herbert Pocket became very close friend with Pip while his stay in London. He took care of Pip without any

Many films or dramas about love always make me impressed by the power of love. Love can evokes people’s various emotions such as happiness, sadness and anger. Love encourages people to accomplish what they think is impossible or impracticable. In addition, love is an intense and direct feeling that I experiences the most in my life. It is Antigone and Death of a salesman that are the two plays which impress me with the expression of strong love among the roles. The play, Antigone, ends up with tragedy and creates two tragic heroes—Antigone and Creon. Arthur Miller takes advantage of memories, dreams, arguments and conflicts to make up the last day of Willy Loman’s life (Lifcharts.com). Love reflected in the two plays is various, complex and full of tragic feature. Haemon shows his love to Antigone by revolting against his father 's authority and committing suicide; Linda shows her love to Willy by defending him and protecting his American dream, and my friend shows love to his parents by quitting school to support his parents ' company.
On page 178, Mel states, “…And it ought to make us feel ashamed when we talk like we know what we’re talking about when we talk about love.” In short, Mel is suggesting that none of the characters understand love, and those who think they do (Nick and Laura) are temporarily disillusioned. Additionally, Carver invalidates Nick and Laura’s comments on love by categorizing them as new fools in love, meaning that Nick’s comment about love being absolute is far from true. The contrast of the two couples relationships suggests that there are many forms and stages of love, which further disproves its absoluteness. In conclusion, the contrast of all four characters’ views questions both the existence and the verbal definition of true love.
Although Pip undergoes a dramatic personality change, Joe does not significantly change throughout the novel. When Pip finally visits the forge again, he finds that Joe is still as kind as he was when Pip young. This final insight shows that Pip has finally learned that he can be happy with a modest social class, despite what society may try to convince him otherwise. Joe’s static characterization constantly reminds the reader of Pip’s humble beginnings. In this way, Joe inadvertently teaches Pip that happiness can be found where money is not. Pip’s struggle to compromise his past and his present is ultimately resolved when he reconciles with Joe at the end of the
In the play `Romeo and Juliet` the writer William Shakespeare uses the theme of love as a main feature to push the story along. Presented are a plethora of variations of love including family love, true love and courtly love. This essay aims to analyse these three types of love chosen.
Love is not just a word but an action. This statement is very self-explanatory in most cases. Like in The Crucible, John Proctor is the tragic hero of this play, in which his wife and many others fall victim to false allegations of witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts.
Love is defined as the unselfish, loyal, and benevolent concern for the good of another by the Merriam Webster Dictionary. “The Scarlet Ibis” is a short fictional story written by James Hurst that is set in the American south during the early 1900’s. The story illustrates the life and relationship of two boys, Doodle, a disabled young boy, and his older brother. The older brother is the narrator and is never mentioned by name. He showed that he did not love Doodle by being cruel, selfish, and prideful.
The author shows theme of true love throughout the book. The theme of true love is shown by Buttercup and Westley. One example is that the main motivation for Westley to go through climbing to the pick of the mountain, fighting Inigo and Fezzik the giant is to save his true love.Even though there was many struggle they had to go through and many interference that comes to their love to separate them, they seems to work there way out of it and become together again. An example is that when the king pursed Buttercup to marry her she told him that i will not love you for i have loved once, and which she did, even later on after she gave him away to them to save Westleys life and she never give up believing on her true love coming back to save her.
Pip is informed that he is going to London to begin his gentlemanly education and this only serves to feed into his new obsession. The first to see this is wholesome and virtuous Joe. Joe was a caring and compassionate man and stays true to his character throughout the novel. It is
Dickens doesn’t go into great detail describing the whole love story such as how they mey, but the sense that the pair truley loved each other at one time is greatly
The English Review says that “love is not always, ‘the real thing’.” In Twelfth Night, there are three characters whose false love is majorly evident: Malvolio, Sir
The oldest of eight children, Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth in 1812. Dickens experienced a very traumatic childhood which included the ordeal of seeing two of his brother pass away. John Dickens, his father, worked as a clerk in the Navy Pay Office, due to his occupation, the Dickens family had to move a lot. Financial problems led to the imprisonment of John Dickens, who couldn't afford to look after all his family. The whole of Charles Dickens' family soon followed in suite, except for Charles himself though. Instead Charles was taken out of school and made to work in a filthy warehouse, sticking labels on bottles of boot-black for long
The theme of family is shown mainly through Pip’s relationship with his brother-in-law, Joe Gargery. In the beginning of the novel, Pip makes it obvious that he dislikes his sister, and takes more of a liking to her husband Joe because Pip is able to sympathize with him (Dickens 40). Joe becomes his confidant, a fact that becomes apparent when Pip comes home to face a harsh interrogation by Mrs. Joe and Uncle Pumblechook after his first visit to Miss Havisham’s. Pip lies to the both of them about his experience, but feels guilty about doing the same to Joe and confesses his wrongdoing. Joe shows understanding towards Pip, and instead of sternly rebuking him for lying, he simply but seriously Pip about the dangers of lying, saying “if you can’t get to be oncommon (uncommon) through going straight, you’ll never get to do it through going crooked” (Dickens 100). While Pip’s relationship with Joe is being tested by his desire to gain a higher social standing, Pip shows significant guilt over his mistreatment of Joe ( Dickens 296), proving that deep down, Pip never loses his deep love for Joe. It can be safely assumed that the point that Dickens wants to make through Pip and Joe’s relationship is that family is not necessarily determined by biological connections, but by who a person is closest to and feels most comfortable sharing their life with through the best and worst times.
Charles Dickens is one of the most influential writers in history and was “born in Landport, now part of Portsmouth, on February 7th, 1812”(Priestly 5). Despite being the successful writer that he was in life, Dickens had very humble beginnings and because his Father, John Huffman Dickens, “lacked the money to support his family adequetly” , Dickens lived in poverty through out most of his childhood (Collins). Matters only got worse, however, when Dickens’s Father had to “spen[d] time in prison for debt” causing Dickens to have to “work in a London factory pasting labels on bottles of shoe polish” (Collins). It was a horrible experience for him, but it also helped him to no doubt feel pity for the poor, which is
Furthermore, love in Harry Potter is displayed in many different ways. For instance, love between families is very evident in many ways throughout the series including Harry Potter’s, Ron Weasley’s, Hermione Granger’s, Draco Malfoy’s, and even Lord Voldemort’s relationships they had throughout the series. The love Harry’s parents had for him allowed him to live through a killing curse. Ron’s family fought together to protect each
