Odysseus is the Perfect Hero When you think of a hero? you may imagine a firefighter running into a burning building or a police officer protecting child. In the Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus was brave, strong and selfless. Odysseus is a perfect hero. Odysseus is the perfect hero because he is brave. For example one reason why odysseus is a hero because he is brave. Odysseus shows bravery when he goes back for his friends from the lotus eaters saying “but i bought them back, back to the hollow ships (9.110). This shows bravery because Odysseus could've left and not risked his life for his friends. It was a dangerous situation, but Odysseus was brave and went back. Another example of Odysseus being brave is when Odysseus goes to the house of death “ Cirisus us a rather” ( 10. 620). This shows because Odysseus could have just stayed and lived on the boat, but instead he went to the house of death because his crew needed him to find out where to go. Odysseus was very brave to visit the house of death and meet with the devil to get the answers for his crew on where they should go. A third example …show more content…
Circe turned most of his men into animals Circe wanted Odysseus to come with him and he did to free his men “at last I had circe gorgeous men” (10.386). This shows because it shows that Odysseus is selfless he didn't want to get with her but had to free his men This example of his selfless shows his a perfect hero because put people before him. Another example is when Odysseus begged circe to go home “heart long to home” (10.533). This shows because Odysseus is selfless because Odysseus is tries to take his men home. Odysseus asking for help for circe shows he is a hero because goes back for his men. Odysseus comes back and goes for the suitors his son wanted to stay with him but his dad said “leave and get armor (10. 423). This shows because he went and fought himself. He puts others before
Although some believe that the epic hero, Odysseus is a fool for his arrogance and inability to take necessary precautions when dealing with the cyclops and Helios’ cattle, these do not outweigh the reasons why Odysseus is actually a hero. Overall Odysseus is a hero because he cleverly built his bed from an olive tree, since he resides with Circe he gains valuable
Odysseus is not a hero because he lets his pride make most of his decisions, which gets him into difficult situations. Throughout The Odyssey, Odysseus makes mistakes that causes his men to be killed. Most of these mistakes could have been fixed by Odysseus making better decisions throughout his journey.
Odysseus is a hero because he acts courageously while facing the many challenges he encounters. Odysseus’s shows great bravery when he engages in physical challenges. Odysseus daringly fights against the suitors, while significantly outnumbered: “For I must
The majority of those who read The Odyssey consider the protagonist of the story, Odysseus, a hero. On many occasions, however, Odysseus makes decisions beneficial to himself alone. For example, when Odysseus and his men find themselves on Polyphemus's island, Odysseus's actions are self-centered and at the expense of his men. This can be said for most of Odysseus's actions in the story, as his main objective is to reach his home. Having his men by his side when he returns seems a trivial thing to him. Odysseus could be considered a hero, but many of his actions say otherwise. Due to the many unfaithful and self-centered decisions he makes in the story, Odysseus is not a hero.
First, Odysseus is not a hero because he is a foolish leader who makes many mistakes on his journey back home to Ithaka. His first mistake is his decision to let his men raid and
Joseph Campbell once said, “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” True heroes are those who do something for others rather for themselves, Odysseus doesn’t exactly show this trait in The Odyssey. In The Odyssey, Odysseus along with his men try to go back home to Ithaca but due to Odysseus nature, only he actually returns alive. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus proves he is not a hero because he is arrogant, secretive, and unfaithful; resulting for readers to believe that every action has an consequence.
Heroes in real life have supernatural abilities. People also find characteristics of heroes in regular people, like parents, famous people, or just who have made a big impact in their life. The main character of The Odyssey, Odysseus, is shown as a hero because him and his story fit the epic hero cycle. However, just because he is an epic hero, means that he is automatically a hero. He shows us throughout the collection of books that he lacks humility and is unfaithful, proving that he is not a hero in any sense. In Homer’s The Odyssey Odysseus’s lack of boundaries throughout his voyage back to Ithaca show that he is not a true hero.
Odysseus shows his heroism through his bravery. When Circe turned his men into swine, Odysseus confronted her: "I drew my sharpened sword and in one bound held it against her throat"("Circe, the
In The Odyssey, Odysseus goes on a long journey in which he takes part in dangerous adventures. Odysseus is an example of Homer’s greek hero. He is a leader of his people and they depend and follow him. Odysseus is brave; he believes in himself and trusts that he is doing the right thing. Odysseus values his honor and is confident in himself.
Odysseus is a hero because he does things for other people. During his journey, Odysseus does many things to help his crew out. One example on how he helped his crew out is in book 9, “I shot back with my crafty way, ‘My ship? Poseidon god of the earthquake smashed my ship, drove it against the rocks at your island’s far cape…”(220, 318-320). This quote is from the part of the book where they get past the cyclops.
Throughout the epic poem, Odysseus has displayed many useful skills and has used trickery to get out of difficult situations. Odysseus is a leader, he is physically strong, smart and good at cunning. As Odysseus tries to get back home to Ithaca he encounters many hardships and finds ways to overcome them. Although Odysseus has proven himself to be courageous and intelligent, I do not believe that qualifies him to be called as a hero. Odysseus is a great leader but in my opinion, he is not a hero.
The mighty Odysseus is many, many things but he is no hero in my eyes. To homer and the other people of early Greece he probably was a hero. All the little kids probably looked up to him but now kids don't even know his name. A hero to me is supposed to save lives. The only life Odysseus saved was his own. In addition to saving lives a hero should be humble, Odysseus does not fit that description, his hubris is as big as the moon. Also if you ask me, yes a hero can commit crimes. Although they shouldn't commit them often only when it is absolutely necessary. Odysseus has stolen from people, raped women, and murdered people when it all could have been avoided. Then to top it all off Odysseus if unfaithful, untrustworthy, disrespectful, and greedy.
In Homer’s, The Odyssey, I believe that Odysseus is a true modern hero. During his long and perilous journey home Odysseus shows many heroic qualities that help save his men from many dangerous situations. He first shows his Valiant behavior during the war in Troy, he cares about his crew and survives the war. He also deeply cares about the welfare of his men on their return trip to Ithaka. Odysseus is a hero because he is a courageous leader, a quick thinker and a modest man.
Hermes helps him out and gives him a plan to help save his men. So our hero is saved by the god Hermes from a horrible fate. Still Odysseus is not content to sail on and leave the goddess behind (Odyssey 10:269-532). Here Odysseus lost sight of his goal, thinking he was in full control of the situation. Only after a full year has past does he even ask Circe to help them on their way and only at the urging of his crew. He forgets that it was only by the gods help that he was able to triumph over Circe. There was no other way he could have survived her magic. In a sense he is beat by her because he forgets his voyage home and wastes a year in tarring there. By forgetting the voyage he denies himself, a hero, and forgets his family and subjects in Ithaca. Exactly the same threat that the lotus eaters posed to Odysseus and his men. The temptation that Circe offers is a life of pleasure. Anything you desire: food, sport, beautiful women, anything at all. For a time Odysseus is taken in my her offer but thanks to his men he is able to break free of it and remember his home and family.
A hero is someone who is determined to have courage or outstanding achievements and is also recognized for the impact they have on the community. Odysseus is the most obvious candidate for the hero in the story, because he is the main character and the story is written around his journey home. However, when The Odyssey is critically read with the main focus on the heroism of Odysseus, there are many reasons why he would not be seen as a hero. In an article by Emily Nicole Howell, an English I teacher at Rustin High School, she talks about how Odysseus
