Since life itself has been around, all organisms have faced moments that test their bravery, strength, and integrity. However, Today’s issues are vastly different from those of the past. From the late 1600’s to now, our values and morals have greatly shifted. Before the separation of church and state, New England was greatly divided by an event commonly known as the salem witch trials. In Arthur Miller’s, The Crucible, the thematic concepts of courage, weakness, and truth are you used to evoke empathy in its readers.

Throughout the entirety of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, the abuse and struggle for power is noticeable, and plays a major influence on the characters of the play, with many of them abusing it to further their own goals and keep up their appearances, and even leading one of them to the grave. Straight from the beginning of Act 1, there is an apparent struggle for power, with Reverend Parris and Giles Corey arguing about whether or not Parris should get money to pay for firewood, with Parris arguing that he should and Giles stubbornly arguing that he should not, as he has already crossed the boundaries of Giles' contract by giving the deed to the house. There are those who desire power, but for different reasons. In The Crucible, power plays a strong role. Take Abigail for example, who is desperate for attention to get John Proctor back. She is blatant about the whole situation, and isn’t aware of all the chaos she is causing in Salem. In power, there is greed, selfishness, possession, attention, and manipulation. Throughout the play, Abigail gains all of these elements of power and abuses it.

There are many strategies that an individual can use to maintain and establish power over the majority, both negative and positive. Many of the characters in The Crucible use these tactics throughout the play to give themselves an advantage with regard to their place in the community. Some of the characters include Abigail, John Proctor, Reverend Hale, Cheever, and Danforth. The individuals are able to establish and maintain power over the majority by using fear, logic, and authority.

A respectable reputation is a commonly sought after title that many will go to extreme lengths to achieve. People all over the world value how their peers view them. In the late 1600’s one’s reputation was their everything. In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, characters manipulate the truth and strike fear into others to furiously protect their reputation. Multiple characters use the act of manipulation to save their reputation in a small town.

Power is the ability to influence an individual or a series of events, most humans crave power and the ability to be in control of others. In Salem Massachusetts the Puritan lifestyle gave individuals few freedoms and little power in one's daily life. They were not allowed to do anything that resulted in enjoyment, an individual's life was not devoted to one's self and well being but only to God. The Puritan lifestyle was a very restricting one, this caused Puritans to crave the power they could not grasp, until the Witch Trials in 1692. In the Crucible by Arthur Miller, many characters including Abigail Williams and Mary Warren use the Witch trials to obtain power that they did not possess before the trials occurred.

Our world has revolved around power, ever since ancient kings fought over great lands, and even to which sibling gets the last cookie. “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely“ Lord Acton displays how power has the ability to change everything, and with more power comes greater consequences. In Salem a famous series of events happened around 1962 till 1963, and many people lost their lives because of the abuse of power. Abigail, Danforth, and Mary demonstrate immense signs of power in Arthur Miller's, The Crucible, and how the influence of power can turn a simple town upside down.

Abigail Williams and the Evil Nature of Manipulation In the Bible, Matthew 7:15 states “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. " Many people in theocracy based society seem to disregard this rule and use their authority to make others follow them even if they are not preaching the truth. These situations can cause deadly effects and lead to chaos and destruction.

Power and Manipulation in The Crucible Power can come in many different forms, it is often impactful towards other people. Often times people abuse the power they have, to get something out of it for themselves. There are three characters in Arthur Millers play, The Crucible, who abuse their power for a certain personal gain. Abigail Williams, Reverend Parris and Governor Danforth abuse their power in Salem for jealousy, vengeance, material gain and land.

Power can be as easily obtained as it can be abused by any given person. Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible displays the use of power dynamics in many of its characters. The exert of power presented by the proposed children of God, Abigail Williams and Mary Warren, rose to the extent of mass murder through the witch trials.

Power comes in many different forms and is used in many different ways. Power in the hands of a righteous person is beneficial. Power in the hands of a corrupt person corrupts. In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, Miller illustrates the effects of power in the hands of his characters. Miller uses the setting of the Salem Witchcraft Trials in his backdrop to show both the good and bad effects of empowering certain individuals who were previously powerless.
