Boo Radley, Atticus Finch, and Tom Robinson are all misperceived by the people of Maycomb, and have more good qualities than meets the eye. Everyone but maybe 20 people in Maycomb are against him. A select few of the white people and all of the black people believe in him, his biggest, most firm believer is Atticus. He is going to fight until Tom succeeds. Mayella accuses Tom of rape when he clearly didn't with all of the evidence out on the table she says, "’I got somethin' to say an' then I ain't gonna say it no more. That nigger yonder took advantage of me an' if you fine fancy gentlemen don't wanta do nothin' about it then you're all yellow stinkin' cowards, stinkin' cowards, the lot of you."’(251). Tom is perceived by others that because he is black, he is minority and doesn't matter. Tom is innocent but he is purposely condemned as guilty. Tom is definitely innocent and everyone knows. People and the jury are just scared to admit it. Tom himself stated to Atticus, “Tom Robinson: And I said, Miss Mayella, let me outta here, an' I tried to run. Mr. Ewell cussed at her from the window and said he's gonna kill
Prejudice: noun. “Preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience” (Dictionary). Prejudice is one of the most relevant things in the lives of two children, Jem and Scout, in a small town, Maycomb, Alabama. It’s the 1930s, the Great Depression has already hit, and racism has already impacted this small, innocent town. Jem and Scout learn what their town is hiding by finding out who their neighbors really are. In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, prejudice is like a second language to the people of Maycomb. It is shown by gender, race, and social status.
I have gathered you all here today, because recent events have really had the whole town in uproar… I thought I should remind y’all that Just because their are folk… white folk… that would discriminate against us coloured… that would go out of out their way to cause us trouble… Does not mean, we should prejudice these people and expect them all to commit such acts upon us all. Myself personally, rasin’ two white children, and tendin’ to their property, I ‘ave begun to truly see, that there are those who would help, and who would look out for our kind in times ‘o trouble. Mr Finch for instance, Is a man of kindness, a man who would fight for coloured folk in court even if he knew the odds were against him. I can bet that there be plenty ‘o other folks, who would treat us like human bein’s... Now… I been hearin’ crazy talk about startin’ a riot.
In the past people were filled with prejudice and racism, but there was still good people. The book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee was written in 1960, but set during the 1930’s. During this time the United States was going through a hardship known as “The Great Depression”. Another terrible act during this time was the mistreatment and segregation of African Americans. These things brought about prejudice people who did not want kind people to be free. Among the hate and distrust in To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus, Mr. Raymond, and Calpurnia are the least prejudice.
To Kill a Mockingbird is a book centered around prejudice. The three main prejudices it shows is class, gender and race. Harper Lee is trying to teach everyone that these prejudices are very bad and that we need to learn to not judge someone by their looks or by male or female. In the beginning of the novel, the story begins by the kids trying to get Boo Radley to come out of his house. They think that Boo was being punished by staying in his house. Later in the novel it switches gears to the Tom Robinson trial. Tom was a black man accused of rape which he didn’t commit. Because of the color of his skin the jury ruled him guilty. Finally, at the end of the story Bob Ewell tries to murder or kidnap Jem and Scout to get revenge at Atticus for going against him. Later that night, they meet Boo for the first time and learned that he saved them and killed Bob Ewell.
Prejudice and To Kill a Mockingbird In today’s world, prejudice still exists in the form of racism, bias, and discrimination. In the United States, racism is present against people of color (non-whites), and in South Africa, this racism exists as xenophobia. Prejudice is a bias, not based upon reason or real experience. It is a preconception of an individual, or a specific group.
The southern United States in 1930’s was filled with segregation, racism, and prejudice. This brings back to mind what a wise man once said “Those who want to live, let them fight, and those who do not want to fight in this world of eternal struggle do not deserve to live” (Adolf Hitler). Today’s society is not pleased with the idea of hate against specific groups of people. However, everyone judges someone solely on their appearance every once in awhile. To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, focuses on these judgements and points them out to everyone in an exaggerated way. The main theme of To Kill A Mockingbird is about how people are quick to judge others because of their appearance. While this isn’t necessarily
First of all, one example that shows prejudice in the novel is social prejudice. Social prejudice is when an individual or group negatively show incorrect attitude to someone based on the individual’s membership of a social group. Harper Lee puts many examples of social prejudice throughout the story, starting from the beginning of the novel to the end. One of the examples that stands out is the character Dolphus Raymond. Dolphus is a wealthy white man who prefers the company of African American. He is married with his African American women and has fathered a number of mixed children. Just like his children he is also mocked by the town. The children are mocked by the town because of their mixed skin color and Raymond is also mocked
The level of prejudice and hypocrisy in Maycomb and the world was overwhelming in this book. Throughout this story there are many examples of the amount of prejudice in the world. In Scout’s Current Events period, a student brought up that Adolf Hitler was “after the Jews” and that he was persecuting them. Scout’s teacher Miss Gates then goes on to explain why she thinks that Jews were being mistreated. Miss Gates claims that the persecution of the Jews is “one of the most terrible stories in history”.
In this novel, To Kill A Mockingbird there are two things the reader can view and would like to talk about and introduce, life in Maycomb, prejudice, and the following events that happened in the book.
The theme of prejudice was very prevalent in the 1930s as it represented the golden age of discrimination. Harper Lee’s book, To Kill a Mockingbird, depicts this theme within the quiet, uneventful county of Maycomb, Alabama. However, the injustices that occurred can be attributed to the prejudice of the residents within the county. Perhaps the most frequent forms of prejudice were: classism, racism and gender discrimination.

The prejudices against African American discussed by Harper Lee in To Kill a Mockingbird are still present in modern society. Race is shown often in To Kill a Mockingbird and is used in many ways. Some ways race are shown is Jem and Scout are taken care of by a black housekeeper named Calpurnia. Another way race is shown is Atticus is a lawyer and he is representing Tom Robinson which is a black man accused of raping a white women. Tom Robinson goes to court and pleads guilty to rape because of his race and he gets killed by the sheriff because he didn’t listen. Many people in the town of Maycomb do not respect Atticus for standing up for Tom Robinson. Mr. Cunningham and company come to the jailhouse and tell Atticus that Tom Robinson is in
Arthur Radley (Boo). Boo is a mysterious man, and a common villain of Maycomb’s stories. Throughout the novel To Kill A Mockingbird Boo is told to be a dangerous, evil, and mischievous man. Many citizens of the town have discriminated against him with these rumors even though they don’t know a lot about him. These people have no right to be saying what they are.
People are criticized and placed on the fringe of society for many different reasons, but the effect is all the same. Harper Lee noticed that the world around her had a very negative way of looking at people who were not perfect. She took action during the 1960s and wrote a book (set in the 1930s) that teaches a simple lesson: prejudice is everywhere. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee accurately displays prejudice within communities and people groups by using the ideas of racism, sexism, and social status.
“Prejudice is a learned trait. You’re not born prejudice; you’re taught it.” - Charles R.
