Conflict is a struggle between two opposing forces. In literature, there are three types of conflict: internal, external, and interpersonal. Throughout the novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry, all three types of conflict are shown. The Giver tells the story of Jonas, a twelve-year-old boy who is selected to become Receiver or Memories. Once Jonas has knowledge of the past, he realizes that the government controls every aspect of his and his family’s lives. With the help of an elder, he attempts to escape the restrictive life he had been forced to live. Chaos is bad, but sometimes, it is good too. The decision to go to sameness, lacked something: choices. The ability to be creative and independent. The idea of making your own choices, the ability to be different from people, was a question Jonas asked when he was talking to The Giver. He said, “But now that I can see colors, at least sometimes, I was just thinking: what if we could hold things up that were bright red, or bright yellow, and he could choose? Instead of the Sameness.” When Jonas asked this, he was contradicting his beliefs before he became The Receiver. When he inquired The Giver about the bright colors, he was basically asking him, “What would life be like without Sameness?” The Giver replies to Jonas’s question by saying, “He might make wrong choices.” By saying this, the Giver was implying that if there was not Sameness, the community would fall back into chaos

In the story everyone is colorblind so no one can choose different colors and have no opinion, they also have the same bike and clothes. If you are a girl you have to wear a ribbon in your hair until you are nine and then once your ribbon gets taken out of your hair you get a jacket. For instance, “ ”Our people made the choice, the choice to go to sameness. Before my time, before the previous time, back and back and back. We relinquished color when we relinquished sunshine and did away with differences.” He thought for a moment. “We gained control of many things. But we had to let go of others” “ (124). One of the problems with the community having sameness is that the newborn children could never experience sunshine or snow, but they never have to experience pain or starvation. They feel, wear, and look the same, the community will never feel different, but the only difference is their age and little accessories. For example ,“ It’s the way they live. It’s the life that was created for them. It’s the same life that you would have, if you had not been chosen as my successor” (192). Jonas and the community’s whole life has been controlled by elders. Lois Lowry's The Giver describes Jonas, as we jump into his world of sameness. But Jonas isn't quite the same as everyone else. With what is called ''the power to see beyond'', Jonas is able to see slight visions of color that no one else can. To them, the world is in black and white, to prevent any jealousy relating to color. When Jonas is selected to be ''the reciever of memory'', he is immediately confused, as he should've gotten assigned to a job like ''teacher of the fives''. It turns out with Jonas' special abillity comes great responsibility. When he meets The Giver, he finds out his new job will be to take the memories of the entire world from The Giver, to provide wisdom to the community when they most need it. Only Jonas, The Giver, and a select group of the community known as ''The Elders'' know what the world was before sameness came about. Sameness might be tough to describe, but the best way it could be put is that it's a eutopia with a multitude of downsides. As shown multiple times in the book The Giver, the main conflict was man v. self. The main character that had this war throughout the whole book was Jonas, the upcoming Receiver. The conflict that Jonas had to go through was the pressure and apprehensiveness of making tough and hard decisions. Additionally, he had to figure out how he felt about particular situations in the book because sometimes it would induce many types of emotion like fear, surprise, disgust, and anger. The things that make people human could be easily be taken away. In the book, The Giver, the government has made the citizens believe that sameness is good to have. The government would even go far enough to get rid of twins to completely avoid a little confusion. People are being forced to believe that sameness is a good thing and that being unique or different is a bad thing. These people are prevented from learning about the outside world. In The Pedestrian, people aren’t doing anything except for watching tv. The police catches a man, Leonard Mead, late at night walking and they suspect he’s doing a suspicious act. The police ask what he’s doing and he says that he’s just taking a walk like what he’s been doing for years.

In the novels “The Giver” by Lois Lowry and “Anthem” by Ayn Rand it gives examples of radical Conformity and the results. In The Giver it states “two children - 1 male, one female to each family unit, it is written very clearly in the rules.”. This gives us a basic idea on just how controlling the society is and how the people think of as it normal. In order to lead a joyful and stressless life one must find a balance between individualism and conformity.

Imagine being trapped in a community and everyone is the exact same. Imagine feeling not special in anyway. Everybody wears the same clothes, rides the same bike, the weather is always sunny behind clouds, and there is no color. Well Jonas had to live in the society for many years until his world was turned upside down. In The Giver, the Giver is the receiver of memory for the community. The receiver of memory is in charge of the memories of the past that the community doesn’t know about. The ceremony of 12 is when the people of 12 is given there jobs picked out by the elders. The elders are the main committee of the community, they make the decisions. Jonas was then given the one of the highest job of the community, Reciever of memory. The job was rare and only chosen once the old receiver is about ready to pass. The receiver of memory passes the memories of the past that he got from the previous receiver of memory. The Giver is the receiver of memory he gave Jonas memories he never knew about. He transferred them by putting his hand on Jonas’s back and transferring them. When his memory was gone and in the new receiver the memory would vanish from his memory and transfer into the new receiver's memory. Until the new receiver passes the memories on. In The Giver, By Lois Lowry, The theme of, sameness means everything being the same and nothing being different is supported by these symbols: No Color, Bikes, and the weather.

In Lois Lowry’s The Giver, the Giver and Jonas use the two following quotes to justify their community’s idea of “Sameness”, where everyone is the same but has no choice. The Giver tells Jonas, “Life here is so orderly so predictable—so painless.” In response, Jonas says, “We really have to protect people from wrong choices.” Eventually, both Jonas and the Giver realize that sameness is wrong and that it is better to be equal, to have the same rights, but able to choose to be different.

The advantages of Sameness would be that it eradicates poverty and would abolish destruction to the people

Imagine living in a world where nothing changed and everyone was the same. In Lois Lowry’s novel, The Giver, the society is all the same. For example the people of the society do not fight and there is no war. Sameness is slowly working its way into our society. It is used as uniforms in some schools, even secluding yourself to a specific friend group because everyone has the same interests could be considered as Sameness. I believe Sameness is a major advantage due to no one suffering, but living where a society is completely the same would not be an interesting life to live. The Giver portrays how sameness in a society could have advantages and disadvantages.
