As dozens of slaughtered bodies rot in the town of Salem, yet selfishness still covers the scent of the dead. The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, has many examples where selfishness plays a big role in this book. One major way that selfishness shows up in this work is showing the people’s hunger for power. The people in Salem Massachusetts show many ways of being selfish but the biggest way, is that they will do anything to get land even at the cost of a person’s life. Being selfish is one thing but when you will take dozens lives for your own gain that is just pure selfishness. For them to do this, they will have to accuse the owners of witchcraft to get what they want. For the person to achieve their goal of getting the land, they must prove why they think the other person is a witch and if they prove that that person is a witch then they will be killed. After that is when the person can buy the deadmans land. The will take someone else’s life in order to get something of theirs that they want, all of this is just an act of pure selfishness. One great example of this is the Putnams, the Putnams are known for having land and they are always are trying to get more. To get Rebecca Nurse’s land they accuse her of being a witch to kill her. They also have previous conflicts with her too, and one of these was that she helped deliver their babies and they all died. The second opposition was that they had a fight for the land that the Nurses now have. What the Putnam’s did to accuse her of witchcraft, is that all of their babies have died in childbirth and Rebecca Nurse has helped deliver them so she must have done witchcraft to their babies for all of them to die. This is one of the biggest examples of land grabbing in this book and all of this drama came from two families. So imagine what is happening all across the world between people for land at this time. A great example of this is the two judges known as Hathorne and Danforth. These two men are taking other people’s lives to save their reputation and their own life. They have taken dozens of innocent lives and these men even know that the people that they have slaughtered are innocent. Even after someone has found them out, they still follow through with their nefarious plans to murder the pure. This is how the town of Salem decays in its own
