Sixteen year olds can drive a car, work jobs, and pay taxes, but they are not able to vote. In 1971, the voting age was lowered from 21 to 18 simply because that is the age you can join the military. They lowered it down to age 18 because they thought that it was unfair that young men were not able to vote, but they were able to fight in the war at the time, which was World War II. The voting age should be lowered to sixteen because at that age, Sixteen year olds can drive a car, emancipate from their parents, and if they vote while they are still young it can become a habit.
Sixteen year olds should be allowed to vote because they can drive a car. In
1921 Connecticut allowed sixteen year olds to drive with an adult with a license.

By the 1980s all states had a law that sixteen year olds could be able to take a drivers test and to drive without an adult. So because sixteen year olds can drive they should also be able to vote. Sixteen year olds should be allowed to vote because they can legally emancipate from their parents at that age. Emancipation of a minor is when a child is no longer looked after by their parents. To get emancipated the child must go to court. The judge then decides if the child should be on their own. There are a few rules in order to emancipate, they must be married, or they need to be in the armed US forces, or you must be living apart from your parents and able to support yourself. So because sixteen year olds are able to emancipate from their parents and live on their own they should be aloud to vote.
Sixteen year old should be able to vote because if they vote while they are still young it could become a habit. Did you know that the brain is still developing until your mid twenties. During this time the brain is more vulnerable to forming habits. So if teens start voting earlier the more these habits will form. That's why sixteen year olds
For many teenagers in the United States their 16th birthday is an important milestone. This is the age that teenagers begin to integrate more into society as they begin to drive and experience new levels of freedom. As 16 is the usual minimum age for employment in most industries some teens even get jobs for personal reason or to benefit their household. The minimum age to acquire a driver's licence should not increase to 18 as younger teens will not be able to help provide for their families with current public transportation methods in the United States.
Some 16 year old teens already, have an apartment and may already be married, and have children. Some are also legally emancipated from their parents. Some adolescents even drive. They have already started their lives as an adult.
In the article, “A 16 year old is as good as an 18 year olds or a 40 year old at voting” by Laurence Steinberg argues that 16 years old are allowed to vote in parts of South America and Europe and they do just fine. She believes 16 and 17 year olds are reasonable, can get politics information and can make good political decisions. According to Steinberg, someone who pays taxes, has a job, drive and serves in the military, should also be given the right to drink and vote. In addition to that, Steinberg claims that there are people who matures emotionally and intellectually around the ages of 15 and 22 year old. Steinberg disagree that more than 8 million Americans who are under the 18 age are not given the opportunity to vote. While is true
Another reason I think the voting age should not change is because 16 year olds are not as
Sixteen-year-olds have already taken on several adult-like responsibilities. They can be taxed, they can get a job, they can drive, and they can sign up to join the armed forces. If they can do all that, and even be sentenced to death, why can't they vote? It just doesn't make sense that they can't vote.
The legal voting age should be reduced to 16 instead of 18. We can work, we can join the army, we can even get married at the age of 16, but we can't vote at 16? We can leave school, we can move out of the family house and live on our own independently if we wanted to at the age of 16, but yet we are considered immature and not responsible enough to vote at 16, why?
Why were people wanting the voting age lowered? One main reason was because it was allowing millions of young people to participate actively in the Democratic process. Another main reason was to have a powerful voice because they were never getting heard. People also wanted it to be lowered because the new generation would have to run the future and have the next generation not letting them being able to vote could be the government in a hole that we dug so deep their would be no way of fixing it. Lastly, it paved way for the future generations and for their voice to heard also.
In addition, letting kids get their license at the age of 16 will give them freedom and the responsibility of not having to depend on their parents. You
With the new draft in place, the voting age argument was brought up once again. In 1954, President Eisenhower called for a constitutional amendment to allow eighteen through twenty-one year old men to vote, but it failed to move forward (Poe, 3). Though congress failed to pass the amendment, three states went ahead and lowered the voting age on their own: Kentucky in 1955 (to eighteen) and Alaska and Hawaii in 1959 (to nineteen and twenty respectively) (Poe, 3). Then, the Vietnam War turned the tide. By the late 1960’s, thousands of youth were fighting an extremely unpopular war, which had all Americans on edge. Vandenberg’s new argument, “old enough to fight, old enough to vote,” had everybody talking (Poe, 3). In June 1970, President Nixon signed a bill giving eighteen year olds the right to vote (Poe, 3).
African-Americans were once not allowed to vote, and neither were women. Voters also had to be of greater age, and had to take a literacy tests. As the years progressed, the voting age was then lowered to 18 year olds through the 26th amendment, for all American citizens. However, citizens of Takoma have come to the realization, that the voting age should be even lower in order for society to have change. Although voting is a national privilege, 16 and 17-year old citizens should be allowed to vote as this will allow them to be more connected to the community, it will establish a culture of voting with higher turnout, and allow these individuals to be politically
Allowing teens that are sixteen and seventeen vote is a good idea because many kids have a dream of their own. Ben miller, who is one of the first sixteen years olds to vote stated “it's a valuable privilege”, Which in all ways he's correct not many countries allow their younger generations to vote. After the “26 amendment gave 18-year-olds the right to vote” (shin) the rate of voter registration want up. The younger teenagers are considered more likely to vote than the elders. This showed a small difference in the outturn making it a better chance for whatever candidate to be chosen. Although, Miller did not have a driver's license yet he was still able to vote because of his “pre-register” which allowed him to vote “through the Motor vehicle administration”(shin). Even though his mother was a”writer and whose father does international relief and development work”(shin), he was
In my position I agree to lower the age of voting to 16-17 years old because it can raise up the percentage of voting. Many people are not voting because they don't believe it can help them and their community also with the support from 16-17 years old, it can show a huge difference on how the votes are increasing little by little. Also it can gives them experience on what's the voting like. Once they get older, they will know what to do because they registered the vote in an
People may be old enough to vote and fight for our country, but at the age of eighteen,
In 1971, the voting age was lowered the voting age from 21 to 18. To avoid the confusion that would result from having two voting ages, the states started to enact new laws that enabled 18-year-olds to vote in state and local elections.
One crucial evidence used in the case to raise the driving age is the mental stage teenagers are in at this age. Teen brains at sixteen aren't as developed as an eighteen-year-old brain. This is showcased in a study on the Chicago Tribune that
