CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
Student jobs have become a sort of trend among students around the world, who wants to be a working while they are studying. In short, the term that suits this trend is ‘Earn and Learn ‘ policy. Other reasons why student jobs are popular among students are they help to cope up with the constant increase in tuition fees, and a way to afford further educations. The problem has been developed with the question as to how the corresponding workloads and required working hours of working students affect their academic performance at EARIST. As a researcher, the main purpose of the study is to know the factors that affect the academic performance of working students. In addition, this paper aims to provide encouragement and motivation to all students especially to those who are financially distressed to pursue and finish a college degree in order to competitive in the future and be able to realize their goals and aspirations. It may also provide learning experiences and information to other students who are not working. In order to accomplish our objectives, we adopted several methodologies in obtaining data and information such as conducting surveys by providing questionnaires to our subjects, getting information in the internet and conducting interviews personally and honestly with our target subjects to get assurance that our
Laurence Steinberg discusses in his essay “Part-Time Employment Undermines Students’ Commitment to School” that students who have a part-time job do not do as well in school as other students. Working twenty or more hour shifts per week can interfere with a students grades and accomplishments in school. Steinberg states, “That the key issue is not whether a student works but how much time he or she devotes to the job”(472). I work a minimum of twenty-five hours a week making and that makes it difficult to complete my homework or study because I come home very tired and drained from my job.
The relevant independent variable in his study is hours worked by a student; the relevant dependent variables in his study are credits completed per semester and student GPA. Darolia’s study also considers disparate effects on GPA and credit completion based on student characteristics (e.g., gender, full or part-time status).
During the decision making process, students must be aware of the academic effects that arise when working a part-time job and attending classes throughout each week. A job can provide benefits, extra income, and students with the opportunity to learn professional skills such as communication, teamwork, time management, and good customer service. These opportunities successfully prepare undergraduates for future career goals.
Getting a job will enhance a student’s work experience and ethic. Work experience is valuable and will be a major employment point as many business owners only hire experienced employees. Getting a job will build their resume early on and help with future employment. Additionally, the student will develop better communication and time management skills by making business phone calls, communicating with coworkers, and budgeting time
A student named Andrew Braaksma wrote an article in a newspaper called, “Lessons from the Assembly Line”, explaining his story about his summer occupancy while being on vacation away from college. The author writes about the lessons, experiences, and knowledge he had gained from his summer job away from his college campus. Andrew Braaksma explains both roles as a student and as an employee sharing these lessons he learned about the value of an education. Andrew shows his audience the benefits of working and why valuing an education is so vital to an individual’s future. The author’s goal is to inspire young college students to value their education, explore the workforce, and appreciate how employment can benefit them by sharing his own experiences. Being employed or working while attending school is very valuable because it teaches you the concept of financial obligation, gives you a strong worth ethic, and teaches you many lessons about the real world, and how important an education is.

Nowadays, international students need spend at least $12,000 per year on their daily life in Australia. Moreover, in consideration of student’s lifestyle and place of study, this estimate might be even higher. Therefore, government allows students to take a maximum of 20 hours part-time work per week in order to get living subsidies. Some people claim that these working hours is a drop in the bucket for students who faced with economy pressure. However, these people ignored the enormous study pressure on international students. Students must work in a time restriction because, firstly, students need many study time, especially for international students. Furthermore, physical problems will be happened which are of great fundamental to a
I think the statistics that Etzioni presents is show us many students have poor academic performance due to their working hours. Some students
A survey from Citigroup finds that almost eighty percent of high school students take part in a part time job. Students do not have careers in their jobs through high school, but jobs that can keep money in their pockets. The decision is left up to the students if he/she wants to work and attend school simultaneously; the decision should not be left up to the parents/guardians. Although the decision should not be left up to the parents/guardians, getting a job should be encouraged to high school students. Having a job introduces students to the real world and transforms students into responsible young adults. Nothing can teach young adults responsibility and management like the experience of having a job throughout high school. Since I am
Education breed a breath of vision and understanding to people. University as a place where affords the higher education for students is a necessary part for composing the foundation of modern society. With the rapid development of society and the enhancement of the status of education, more and more students choose to take a college degree after graduating from high school. From the point of the view of some students who would like to step into society earlier, although university plays a relatively important role in education, it takes a long time to get a college degree for young people. Compared with studying in college, taking working experience off campus is more significant for these students.
Although school is an essential part of life for society, there are other significant options for teenagers to do over summer break. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “...from April to July 2016, the number of employed youths 16 to 24 years old increased by 1.9 million to 20.5 million...”(Employment). Since college is not cheap, many think about applying for a job to earn money. If the school year extends, there
These numbers can be frightening for students who have to take out loans to finance their education. However, many students do not understand what is waiting for them after graduation. Students are encouraged to pick a subject to study that interest them; although this is important, students also need to look at the job opportunities available in that field of study. For example, many young students aspire to become teachers, the job definitely has some perks, but finding a full-time job in teaching can be difficult. According to Maclean’s “67 per cent of education graduates from Ontario’s class of 2009 found themselves unemployed or underemployed in the following year” (Dehaas 2011).
In the competitive world today, having a college degree might not benefit a student as much as before, thus opening up numerous questions concerning its necessity. Not only is the number of students desperately trying to enroll in college increasing, but the tuition shoots up as well. However, will college enrollment necessarily be enough to increase your chances of attaining job security? The answer is hotly debated amongst adults and students alike, which opens up the second option for students, that is, joining the work force. Although this option is generally shunned by the new generation, the tough economy and slow restoration makes it quite a desirable choice at the moment. Joining the work force is a hard decision to make as it

It’s that moment in our lives where we take that first step towards adulthood. I managed to get my first job towards the end of junior year. I wanted to get a job before, but I decided to wait after finishing my SATs and ACTs. I wouldn’t want to distract myself from studying with working.
