William Shakespeare’s 16th century play “Romeo And Juliet” successfully develops the themes of love, violence and family rivalry. Shakespeare has effectively conveyed these themes into the play through the conflict which constantly occurs between two wealthy and powerful families (known as the Capulets and Montagues) and also the love between Romeo and Juliet. Baz Luhrmann's version of the original play of “Romeo And Juliet” is modernized to meet the interests of a new audience. The prologue and the opening scene of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, develops the themes of family rivalry and violence. Shakespeare establishes these themes through the conflict between the two powerful families in the city of Verona whilst Luhrmann takes this same concept of family rivalry and adapts it for a modern audience by using corporations as symbols of the families power. The play’s plot has cleverly establishes that these two families, the Capulets and the Montagues, have been in conflict for many generations. Luhrmann adapts Shakespeare’s evolution of the powerful noble families for a modern audience through suggesting that these families are massive and strong corporations with symbolic power and influence among the modern city and audience. Shakespeare establishes the power of the families in the prologue by describing as being “ Two households” . The word “households” works as a metaphor for the families and everyone that might be associated with them or working alongside them. The prologue also explains the nature of their rivalry and conflict between them through “ From ancient grudge breaks new munity”, the phrase “ancient grudge” is a description of how deep their rivalry goes and until it can be broken and no one knows what started this ancient grudge between the families. The film adapts the concept of the powerful families into a modern context by making the Capulets and Montagues strong corporations. In a modern setting, corporate and financial power is something a modern audience and society would understand. The “ ancient grudge” suggest that these two families have been in competition for wealth and power over years and years and have a significant influence on all citizens in life. The film highlights the
In the story ¨Romeo and Juliet¨ by Shakespeare, many problems have occurred. Some of those being the huge conflict between the Capulets, and the Montagues, and Juliet's parents forcing her to marry Paris. Many people could be accused for causing some of the problems in Verona, but the two fighting families is the main one for a couple of reasons.
Is family always the cause of issues? Does the audience know how much our family reflects on our opinions? Everything that anyone does reflects on us, depending on our gender, age group, family, or ethnic background. If you think that families are hard on each other then think of Romeo and Juliet’s families, including Capulet, Lady Capulet, Tybalt, Nurse, Montague, and Lady Montague, and how they played the ultimate role in Romeo and Juliet's deaths.
The family feud is responsible for the deaths of both Romeo and Juliet. Had there not been a feud, there would have been no need for Romeo and Juliet to hide their love. Due to the fact that they are not able to be together publicly, they both commit suicide. Although the entire Capulet family considers the Montagues to be adversaries, and vice versa, Romeo and Juliet both secretly detest the conflict and express no feelings of remorse for engaging in a forbidden relationship. For example, the Nurse and Juliet are having a conversation in which Juliet admits her frustration in her choice of a lover:
Both Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet, and Luhrmann’s film, Romeo + Juliet, explore the idea of conflict and how it inevitably leads to tragedy. Although situated in the contrasting social and historical contexts of Elizabethan England and the modern world of Verona Beach in Southern California, 1990s, the two texts both represent how conflict directly leads to tragedy by conveying that, the fight between the Montague and Capulets was depicted as long going and did not have meaning anymore yet the two Lords pride shields them from stopping it, the neglectfulness of the individuals from each house prolonged the battle unnecessarily, and that Juliet and Romeo's knowledge of the conflict between their families drove them to conceal their relationship.
Shakespeare’s classic Romeo and Juliet has been reimagined many times across different mediums. One interpretation that stands out among the rest is Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 film of the same name. The most shocking and powerful difference between Luhrmann’s work and other films or stage productions of this piece, is the movie’s setting. Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet is set in the modern city of Verona Beach, New York, ruled by two powerful business families, the Montagues and the Capulets. Themes, language, and ideas remain the same, while places, props, and wardrobes are updated to the twentieth century. This compelling change helps emphasize the violent, fast-paced, and chaotic society of the play, which comes to precipitate the tragic demise of the two main characters.
The prologue provides the audience with a basic introduction to the themes of the play and also the fate of the characters- giving a sense of fate and foreboding. During the prologue, Shakespeare introduces the conflict between the two families by referring to it as an “ancient grudge”. The word “ancient” insinuates that this conflict is a long lost source of hatred, and possibly even that the origin of the aversion between the families has been forgotten. Additionally, within the prologue, Shakespeare describes Verona as “fair”, this gives a clear juxtaposition between the conflict and a “fair” environment. Additionally, In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare presents the Prologue as a sonnet in order to demonstrate the play 's themes of love and the conflict because sonnets were often used to address the subject of love with in conflict.
