Fate And Free Will
If I told you that you would win class president no matter what, would you continue to campaign and take down your competition, or just let your class decide who they want? Well in Macbeth, William Shakespeare uses conflict and witchcraft to develop the theme of fate/free will. The theme plays a big part in the play because Macbeth has to decide to act or to let the cards land as they may. It causes major internal conflict for Macbeth and pushes him to make decisions that overall are significant to the entire play.
Throughout the play Shakespeare uses witchcraft to influence Macbeth’s decisions and to manipulate him. In Macbeth the 3 witches appear and speak to Macbeth saying, “All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis!/ All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor!/ All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be kind hereafter!” (1.3.49-51) By revealing these prophecies the witches gain …show more content…

Macbeth! Macbeth! Beware Macduff,/ Beware the Thane of Fife.” (4.1.71-72), “The power of man, for none of woman born/shall harm Macbeth” (4.1.80-81) and “Macbeth shall never vanquished be until/ Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill/ Shall come against him.” (4.1.91-93). Macbeth had eliminated every other threat, leading up to now to defy fate because he had no sons and he didn’t want his work to just be for Banquo’s sons. So with these three prophecies in mind Macbeth decided to kill Macduff’s wife, children and servants to prove a point and to try and strike fear into Macduff. Afterwards Macbeth decides to let fate take control for a while because Macduff, Malcolm and Fleance had all Fled the country.
