Erasure provides many examples of the four interpretive modes, in which should was discussed various times throughout class. However, for this paper, only two of those four interpretive modes will be discussed. To provide an example for one of the four interpretive modes; the narrative interpretive mode might be the easiest to explain and provide examples for, considering that as of right now, we live in a post-modern society and this book was written during present times. The allegorical and moral interpretive modes provide the readers with the best and clear insight on the story, and also both of these modes reflect each other well within the first five chapters. Beginning with the allegorical interpretive mode. This interpretive mode is made for the readers to looking beyond what is said within the text. Use symbols and signs to figure out what the characters or the narrator is trying to portray. Within the first five chapters, there was a theme that kept showing up. That recurring theme was the theme of “racism”. There was no instance in the story where another race showed the absolute hatred towards the black race, but there are little symbols within the first five chapters that insist there is still racism directed at the minority race. There was an even that took place at one of Monk’s paper readings and there was a guy by the name of Gimble. After Monk read off his paper, everybody in the their seats stood up and applauded him for writing such beautiful
3. The thematic transition in the seventh grade segment occurs when he kisses the white girl, and almost as if he betrays his tribe, is sent away to a farm town. Through the seventh grade transition, the theme transcends from social outcast and discrimination to somewhat unconscious discrimination but social acceptance. Prior to the seventh grade segment, he is explicitly mistreated and bullied, alienated from society. After the seventh grade though, at the farm town, he doesn’t display any direct discrimination, everything he relates and portrays as discrimination is completely indirect and taken as such.
We saw prejudice and discrimination throughout the book. For example, when Lafayette’s was charged with a crime due to hi, been associated with who did it. When LaJoe lost her benefits from the state due to her on and off husband using her home address and when collecting unemployment benefits which LaJoe did not claim as income coming into the home. In both instances, the Rivers were treated as if they were liars and criminals. Because of Lafayette being from the inner city, there was this predetermine thought about any youth that lived in the inner city from the court system. LaJoe was treated with disrespect by the welfare office because of the prejudgment they had formed about people that lived in the inner city. Due to the location in which they stayed, the importance of healthy living condition was not a priority to the city. They were forced to live in the vicinity of garbage, broken sewer systems, dead animals, etc. Also, the children were forced to either stay in their apartments or play on the railroad tracks because the city had only a few areas for them to play. These areas had become run down and it was unsafe for kids to play in. It is unsure why the was such neglect for those areas of the inner city, but one could only think that it had to do with how this race has been treated for years.
In the beginning chapters of the book, we get a glimpse of the typical home and community of an African American during segregation. Many Africans Americans were too adjusted to the way of living, that they felt
I personally have never had to deal with racism but have dealt with discrimination. We face discrimination everyday. People discriminate based upon what one looks like, what one wears, or what one believes in. In the novel, we see examples of segregation as the churches are segregated into black and white. The white people believe that they are superior to the blacks because that is all they have ever known.
As soon as, I read the titled I knew this book was about something to do with racism whether positive or negative. The two words that stuck out are black and syndrome. Unsure of what I was going to read I glance though the chapters to caught keys words that hinted the plot. Black stood out because whenever I see this on literature it tells you the story is about someone African American in the USA. Syndrome stood out because it deals with diseases, an abnormality or conditions that are grouped. Quarterback, I did not realize it was a stereotype in sports until after reading the book by Davis. It opened my eyes to people that will hate you on all levels in every job or professions because of your skin color. Then call themselves
However, the key to unlocking the allegory in this passage is to analyze the word choice of each sentence in a chronological order. The passage reveals that the modernization of visual culture promoted the ideology of racism. In addition, as a reaction against the dominate aesthetic; a new Black Aesthetic was created because of the sublime, beauty, and politics.
We view the world as a perfect world with everyone equal. In reality, racism is tearing it down. Black, white, yellow, or any color their is, everyone should be equal, the bible even says it. Love should be spread through all colors and peace should overcome. In this story, we see how racism becomes something that is enriched and viewed to many cultures.
The narrator find himself in the endless struggle to find a real concept of his true identity, he also has a big battle ahead of him which is to be a black American who is living in an American society where racism is still part of a regular day. Throughout the entire novel, the narrator doesn’t stop to jump from one place to another. We can see this since the beginning of his existence. he came from the south part of the country after been expelled from a good college, then he looks around for a job, from one to another then from the Liberty Paints plant to the Brotherhood. He also find himself every time with different people who have different ideas of how black Americans must behave in order to fit in this white society. While the narrator
In conclusion, as one can see, racism is still a big problem, and bringing awareness to it is the only way it can be solved. A very telling statistics stated that, “ ...43% of blacks said they felt that the country would not make the necessary changes needed to give blacks racial equity in all areas of American life. That's compared to 11% of whites who felt that way. (Vega)” People need to realize how many people, even teens, struggle with social inequality and persecution. Literature and the impacts it makes is the first step to change society’s views of tolerance and acceptance of not just racism, but of all injustices in the world. This goes to show that maybe it isn’t about the color of one’s skin is, but but how they deal with that color
I agree that racism and segregation is the major main theme that the book focus. Because of the bargain between Mr. Rich White and Mr. Poor White racism could have potentially continued eternity. Mr. Rich White has a notion and outlook on racism where he agrees with the man, but wants the man do all of his dirty work for him. It is clearly noticeable that that he was using him for is all benefit in order to get what he desire. In that regard, Mr. White have power over him, controlling everything and to make up something and pay off police and judges to hang black man if it would make Mr. Poor White feel better, having the contentment he wants. Ethnic was one of the theme in this article because Mr. Rich wanted to achieve possibly anything
The mains theme of this movie is discrimination. All the white characters in the novel, with the exception of Skeeter, are racists. Even though many are not aware of it. They treat the black maids poorly because they believe that they are “stupid and inferior”. Throughout the movie, the whites are always referring to the maids with descriptive terms that usually apply to animals. Which suggests that they think blacks have more in common with animals than humans. The whites in the movie build social barriers between themselves and the blacks mainly based upon their fears.
: I think the story’s timeline and the character’s nationality affected the characters because the nationalities of the book’s characters were African-American and during the story’s time line the people mistreated African-American because of their skin color. In the book the main characters were always mistreated by most of the Americans since during that story’s time line Americans thought of themselves as more superior than African Americans. For example, one of the events in the book that affected the main characters are that since they were African-American they had to walk to school, but the most Americans children were given a bus to ride to school. Another example in the book was that the schools of African-American children were given
Today I will be talking to you about the harshness of racism in four visual and verbal texts, 12 Years a Slave, Rember the Titans, Changes, and A Party Down at the Square. These texts Draw an emotional response towards racism. In all of these texts there is racism and blacks getting decrimatanted or put down. In this essay I will be explaining about people who stand up to racism can help make the world a better place, harsh characters show the extreme harshness of racism, texts draw an emotional response towards racism.
Moreover, when one decides to stand up for their beliefs at the right time would be one feels comfortable when is their time to stand up, or when one cannot hold their beliefs and wants to let it off one chest. Furthermore, one knows when it is important to remain silent is to let one think one be a fool or intelligence. Next, how I feel the reality of life of African-Americans in the South is different because back in the 1930's there were several racism in the South, and now there are less racism in the South until this day forward. Ultimately, I learned from the novel is to judge one personality instead, of the color of their skin, the theme of the which sticks up to me while reading the novel is discrimination, one decides to stand up for one's belief such as when one feels comfortable when it is their time, one knows when one need to be silent when one do not be as a fool, and the reality of life for African-Americans today has many
The drawing of narrative inferences by the reader is very important to interpret the work well. However, the author, while writing a story, can treat some incidents in detail and barely mention or even omit others. He may distort these incidents, may not observe chronological sequence, he can use messengers or flashbacks, and so on and so forth. The function of resorting to these varied narrative techniques is to emphasize or de-emphasize certain story-events, to interpret some and to leave others to inference, to show or to tell, to comment or to remain silent, to focus on this or that aspect of an event or character. The use of the unreliable is a very important and unconventional narrative technique used by authors in
