Do you ever feel lonely or never heard? Katy Perry wrote “Firework” to connect with her audience. Katy Perry was born on October 25, 1984, in Santa Barbara, California. Perry’s full name is Katheryn Hudson. She grew up in a very conservative family and started taking singing lessons at age nine. Perry’s singing career took off after the song “I Kissed A Girl”. Perry uses simile, hyperbole, and repetition in “Firework” to illustrate motivation and a positive self-image. Some figurative language that was used in the song “Firework” is similes. A simile is a comparison using like or as. Some similes for the song are: “Do you ever feel like a plastic bag / Drifting through the wind / Wanting to start a again”, “Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin / Like a house of cards / One blow from caving in”, “Do you ever feel already buried deep / Six feet under scream / But no one seems to hear a thing”, “Do you ever feel like a waste of space / You’re original, cannot be replaced” and “Like a lightning bolt, your heart will glow” (1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 24-25, 30). The reason why Perry uses similes is to express the idea of being weak and/or useless. Repetition is repeating words for emphasis. Some repetition that was used in the song “Firework” is: “You’re gonna leave ‘em fallin’ down, down, down”, “Make em’ go Oh, oh, oh!”, “It’s always been inside of you, you, you”, “As you shot across the sky-y-y, “Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon” and “Boom, boom, boom” (23, 22, 46, 19, 59, 58).
