Do you ever feel lonely or never heard? Katy Perry wrote “Firework” to connect with her audience. Katy Perry was born on October 25, 1984, in Santa Barbara, California. Perry’s full name is Katheryn Hudson. She grew up in a very conservative family and started taking singing lessons at age nine. Perry’s singing career took off after the song “I Kissed A Girl”. Perry uses simile, hyperbole, and repetition in “Firework” to illustrate motivation and a positive self-image. Some figurative language that was used in the song “Firework” is similes. A simile is a comparison using like or as. Some similes for the song are: “Do you ever feel like a plastic bag / Drifting through the wind / Wanting to start a again”, “Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin / Like a house of cards / One blow from caving in”, “Do you ever feel already buried deep / Six feet under scream / But no one seems to hear a thing”, “Do you ever feel like a waste of space / You’re original, cannot be replaced” and “Like a lightning bolt, your heart will glow” (1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 24-25, 30). The reason why Perry uses similes is to express the idea of being weak and/or useless. Perry also uses these similes to relate to the audience that might feel useless and/or weak to boost their self-esteem with this motivational song. Perry …show more content…
Repetition is repeating words for emphasis. Some repetition that was used in the song “Firework” is: “You’re gonna leave ‘em fallin’ down, down, down”, “Make em’ go Oh, oh, oh!”, “It’s always been inside of you, you, you”, “As you shot across the sky-y-y, “Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon” and “Boom, boom, boom” (23, 22, 46, 19, 59, 58). The purpose Perry is using onomatopoeia is to make the idea that the audience can have an impact on people, Because in “Boom, boom, boom” the boom relates to the explosions. Essentially explosions make large impacts, therefore figuratively the audience will make a large
In “Fahrenheit 451” the symbol fire represent different meaning that change throughout the book. Through the firemen who burn books and where the symbol 451 on their hat is a means of destruction. 451 is on their helmets to show the degree in which paper from the book ignites. Yet at the same time, Clarisse reminds Montag about candle light, when controlled, symbolizes flickering, knowledge or self awareness. Fire can also represent censorship because the burning of books was to keep the citizens uninformed by burning books which is a mean of taking control of the citizens. Fire was first introduced to the readers as something Montag took pleasure in but as he is getting more informed he slowly stops enjoying to burn things. “It
Onomatopoeia can be used in many ways for many purposes. Typically to describe the sounds a noun makes. But onomatopoeia can also be used as a symbol, a form of foreshadowing, or as a form of suspense. “Whump. Too late. The carts were dropping- Jesus, he released the brake!- and for Eddie, everything slipped into watery motion.” The onomatopoeia in this scenario is used to describe the sound the roller coaster makes as it is falling from the top of the ride. Also, the sound is used as suspense because at that moment, Eddie must make a quick decision and try to save the girl under the ride. Will he save her or not is what the suspense is drawn too. Also, this is used as foreshadowing because it foreshadows events that happen in the conclusion of the story.
In the famous single,“Fireflies”, there were many uses of similes and metaphors to show his vivid dreams when he was young. In stanza 6, Adam Young sang “Cause I feel like such an insomniac”. This is an example of simile, Adam Young is comparing himself to a person who is regularly unable to sleep. In the last stanza, Adam Young sang “Because my dreams are bursting at the seams”. This shows an example of metaphor, because he is comparing two thoughts without using like or as. In stanza 7, Adam Young sang “I got misty eyes as they said farewell”. This is another example of metaphor, Adam Young is trying to convey the idea that he is going to cry as the fireflies said a farewell. By using many
The poem Nighttime Fires by Regina Barecca explains the speaker’s complex view of her father. The speaker uses imagery to describe her father’s strange behaviours after losing his job. Figurative language is used strategically to explain the memories of this young girl’s strange adventures. The diction in this poem is also used very well helping us to understand why these nighttime fires left such a lasting impact on this grown woman from when she was only five years old. All of these things are very important to the progress of the poem and the engagement of the reader.
While most of the population has not attended medical school for six or more years, every patient still needs to understand what is wrong with them. Similarly, while readers of a medical narrative aren’t experts on the medical topics they are reading about, but they still need to understand the story. Books written about illness can be confusing for a reader who isn’t familiar with that condition, which makes the author's job to explain the condition, while still maintaining an interesting story line. Metaphors and similes help to bridge the gap of understanding between patients and doctors, and readers and authors. When someone is unfamiliar with medical terms, giving a scientific definition of a diagnosis does no good, that is
In his poem, Flames and Dangling Wire, the first line immediately sets the scene allowing us to have a sense of where we are. The use of a simile in “The smoke of different fires in a row, like fingers spread and dragged to smudge” implies the filthiness of the tip and the smoke rising from the fires. This also causes the air to
In the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, fire symbolizes destruction and censorship. It symbolizes this by showing how the firemen are starting fires, and not putting them out. It states, “he flicked the igniter and the house jumped up in a gorging fire that burned the evening sky red, yellow, and black.” (Bradbury 3). In the quote it explained how he ignited a fire that burned down a house, when firefighters are supposed to be putting out fires, and not starting them. Another symbolism for fire is the censorship, on how the firemen prohibit books and no one is allowed to have or read them. In the book the firemen go out and burn the books to get rid of them, because of their false information. In the book it Montag states “like the old
In Catching Fire, Suzanne Collins uses hyperbole. The idea with this literary device is to help the reader understand how rich Katniss is from winning the games. An author can state that someone is rich, but not explain how rich, rich is. The reader knows that Katniss does not actually have buckets of money, but that statement tells the reader that she has enough money to at least feed two families. Katniss refers to Gale’s family when she talks about two families and how she has pity on him. She feels pity for him because he has to work in the mines to support his family (two brothers, one sister & mother) and hunts illegally in the forests for meat to sell in the black market. It is very upsetting for Katniss because Gale will not take any

Every 4th of July, many people go out at night and spend hours watching firework shows. Most of us are content to simply enjoy the pretty colors and sparks, without questioning the chemistry behind the spectacle, but have you ever really thought about how fireworks produce such vibrant colors? The colors emitted when a firework explodes come from an aerial shell inside the firework that contains explosive chemicals and metallic salts. These colors appear to us because of luminescence. Luminescence occurs as a result of the valence electrons in the metal salt atoms moving and changing positions. The explosion of fireworks is not a miracle; it’s simply chemistry at work.
In Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451, the phoenix, fire, and Montag burning his own house symbolize the ways in which a person can be reborn. Fire symbolizes the government’s authority or ability to burn ideas and free thinking of an individual. The phoenix symbolizes Montag being reborn, after realizing that fire is the destruction knowledge, that has destroyed him. Montag burning his own house symbolizes Montag becoming a new person and realizing that knowledge is the key to having a more powerful perceptive in how to see the world. That helps Montag to being reborn.
Ultimately, the title of the book, the phoenix, the salamander, the liquid kerosene, and the color red are all part of an intricate conglomerate of symbols which all lead to fire. And fire is what moves Ray Bradbury’s novel along. For example, from the very first pages of the book, the readers can see the clear cut definition of fire in what Montag does for a living and what sweet Clarisse thinks. In fact, Clarisse tells Montag, “So many people are. Afraid of firemen, I mean. But you're just a man, after all…” (Bradbury, page 3). In stating so, she highlights how people are afraid of firemen because of the fear of fire, which means annihilation and loss. Yet, Clarisse reminds Montag of a gentle candle-light. Perhaps, fire also symbolizes the
Nobody knows what caused the Triangle Fire, and maybe no one ever will. Although, there is a writer that described the events so thoroughly that the images make it seem like we were there. This writer’s name is Albert Marrin. The way he is making these images so vivid is something that many amazing writers use. It is called figurative language. He uses many forms of figurative language in his describing of the Triangle Fire. The main reason he uses them was to make the writing more impactful. In other words, instead of using everyday words, he uses metaphors that allows us to comprehend the text, and it also allows us to relate to it. That is why the use of these creating writing elements makes this non-fiction text so impactful. When the
The Lord of The Flies is set during WWII and is about a group of boys getting stranded on an island. Symbols in The Lord of The Flies areis a huge part of the story, but the signal fire, in my opinion, is the most significant one. The fire It symbolizes hope and rescue, and savagery. The author, William Golding, does a great job with displaying this.
Katy Perry takes a similar approach by creating a song that allows people to be the way they are. Katy Perry had created the song “Fireworks.“ This song is an inspirational song that allows people to reveal themselves to the true world instead of keeping it a secret. Katy is trying to portray the fact that people should not be afraid to represent the way they truly are. She wants everyone to show his or her “true colors“. In a sense, Katy wants to people to embrace what they are. In the first few lines she states, “Do you ever feel like a plastic bag. Drifting through the wind. Wanting to start again“ (Fireworks). This part of the song reveals that a lot of people go with the flow. They just follow the norms of society and do not fight against it. She continues on to talk about how people continue to go with the flow until she states, “Do you know that there 's still a chance for you. 'Cause there 's a spark in you“ (Fireworks). This portion of the song reveals there is hope even if want to go against the norm. Just a small push is needed in order to get over the hurdle. Then Katy states, “ 'Cause baby you 're a firework. Come and show 'em what you 're worth. Make 'em go "oh, oh, oh! As you shoot across the sky-y-y“ (Fireworks). When you do reveal yourself, it will feel like a huge burden is lifted off your shoulders. Katy is trying to say to her fans be motivated and keep reaching for the stars. Being unique might be a bad thing, but don‘t let their voice reach you.
