The first half of The Perfect Storm is not the one of the favorite things I have read; nevertheless, as I proceed through the first half of the novel, it becomes more interesting. I have never been connected to fishing and that is one of the reasons I do not enjoy the book so far. Also, I would rather read fiction over nonfiction, but if the book is interesting and talks about information I am enjoy, I could read that book that for hours. So far, The Perfect Storm has started off a bit slow for me, there is not much action and gives a very detailed daily routine of a fisherman, which is not one of my interests. However, once the fisherman of the Andrea Gail, Billy, Bobby, “Sully,” “Bugsy,” and Pierre board their ship for their journey, there is little action that makes me want to read. After they are in the water the daily routine is more interesting and begins to make me want to read. The first half of the The Perfect Storm was not able to grab me right away, however, when …show more content…
Sebastian Junger was able to gather enough information about the Andrea Gail to make the reader feel like they are on the ship. If Junger did not spend the time doing the interviews and gathering the information he did, I believe the book would not have been captivating to me or any of the readers. All of the fishermen and women fighting for their lives made you not want to put the book down. The great incorporations of quotes from how everyone recollected Hurricane Grace, “The Perfect Storm,” and their experience in the storm made The Perfect Storm very surreal. Of the few non-fiction books I have read, I would rank The Perfect Storm as one of my favorites. Although I was not intrigued in the beginning of the book, I was happy that as I continued through the The Perfect Storm, I became enthralled and wanted to read. The Perfect Storm was a great book to help my summer get to a good
As I was reading the sample essay "The Storm We Couldn't Escape" I noticed that he used four out of the five senses, such as sight, sound, smell, and touch. For instance, the author used the sense of sight in great detail to describe the setting. The author mentioned how the dark gray storm clouds swallowed up the sun, how it started to rain as it grew more intense, the power going out leaving them with no electricity, the funnel cloud ripping through the field as it tore up the ground, and the cellar doors that were bound with a thick metal chain wrapped around the handles. The author then used the sense of sound. The author mentioned how the rain sounded as if someone was beating on his home with a couple of gigantic drumsticks, how the pounding
The book is littered with explanations about fishing. I admit that I frequently got lost in these passages. This knowledge is an important element of the story. When a component of the boat malfunctions, readers know the significance of this to the sailors. Without this, the book would have provided a message that only other sailors could understand. Junger, by supplying this information, wants to make sure that all readers can fully grasp the danger and suspense of the book.
The author’s frightening story, “The Storm” has all the expected things that a good scary story should have. It has a story line that gains suspense throughout the story, there is irony, and there is lots of
The Perfect Storm is a novel written by Sebastian Junger, that retells the horrific story of fishermen and sailors who were caught in the eye of the worst storm in history. The book mainly focuses on the Andrea Gail, a swordfishing boat, with a crew of 6 men, who disappeared without a trace deep into the northern atlantic sea. In the year 2000, almost 10 years after the tragic event took place, a motion picture, perfectly titled, The Perfect Storm which was based on the novel was released. There were subtle to few changes in the plot line of the story, however there were many differences among the book and movie. The movie is very intact with the plot and
Isaac’s Storm, is a tale of self- confidence. This Hurricane in 1900 in Galveston was the worst and deadliest hurricane this country has ever seen. About 6,000 people lost their lives and among those who died was Isaac Cline’s wife. I can tell how guilty he must have felt and how horrific this time was for Cline, especially because he thought a massive storm could never devastate his amazing city. The horrific events of what happened in Galveston is only partially told in this book. Erik Larson’s use of Cline’s own letters and reports show Cline’s own self confidence or pride and falsifies facts that Cline was the hero he believed himself to be after the Storm surfaced. Isaac's Storm clearly shows what can happen when human arrogance takes priority over anything else.
One of the things about the book that I personally liked was the characters, some of them were easy to relate to, even if you couldn't you could relate someone you knew with them. For example, David is not one of the main characters from the story but the more you learn about him, the more you realize how ambitious he is, wanted to change his career path almost every week, standing up to Mr. Neck. I think he's one of the things that helped Melinda find her voice.
The overall book and movie of The Perfect Storm carried the same message throughout both versions. The message of the book and movie was perseverance, each and everyone of the crew knew they had everything to lose going out to sea and especially going through the storm but they went through it. Each and every time their crew got put out back to fish it was them against the sea in whether they will make it home alive or not. They had the perseverance, courage, and strength to go out each time, put their lives on the line just to fish for swordfish and bring home not a lot of money to support their families.

If you walk up to a Southerner of today and ask the cause of the Great American Civil War their answer might be it was the terrible aggression of the nasty North against the genteel South: the Southern Belle forgetting, or not knowing, Georgia started out as a settlement of prison convicts. “The 21st century has just begun, yet it has already been marked by some of the worst natural disasters in history.” Do you want to learn about the similarities about the two stories, THE PERFECT STORM and SUPER DISASTERS OF THE 21st CENTURY ?The authors Jacqueline Adams, Ken Kostel, and Sebastian Junger use strategies and techniques but there are similarities between the technique used in both stories.
“Storm Country” by Paul Crenshaw is about his own childhood growing up in Arkansas which is in the heart of tornado alley (Crenshaw, 2004, pg. 203). He explains his encounters with tornadoes and the memories that this remarkable but destructive storm left. Paul Crenshaw explained his story about a tornado in a descriptive way which gave life and meaning with every sentence. After I was done reading I started to think about my own experiences with storm watching during the day and even at night. I agreed with every point he made about the mesmerizing moment of when a storm hits by relating it with my own points about storms.
As I glanced at the clock that showed twenty to seven, I noticed that time had gotten away from me. Working overtime had started to become an ongoing habit, as there never seemed to be enough hours in a day to finish any work. Knowing that all the doors were controlled by automatic locks and the doors inside the building would be locked because it was past six, I started to pack my things up, including my badge that would get me into my building on future mornings. Heading for the exit in my section, with the thought that a storm was supposed to arrive tonight in the back of my mind, I thought nothing of the flickering lights above until I ran into a situation. As I attempted to leave for home after working late last Friday night, not only
“The Open Boat” is short tale of endurance, suffering, and redemption. The story focuses on four interesting sailors on a journey towards survival. They try their best to overcome the adversities of the water and raging storm. Crane focuses on the constant struggle of man’s immobility to control his own life. “The Open Boat” is a nonfictional fiction some call it. It typically is argued as only fiction, but many lean toward its nonfictional quality. Crane wrote the story based off his real life experience of a shipwreck he tragically endured. The Commodore, the name of the ship, was the victim of the waves and Crane just so happened to be one of its friends. He wrote 2 articles based on this tragedy, but “The Open Boat” became the best
The setting of the story "The storm" takes place in Louisiana in a storming evening around the eighteen hundreds. The storm is important because in the end everyone is happy. Also the storm is hard just like the affair that happened between the characters in the story. (Alcee & Calixta) The storm is important because it affects everyone. Bobinot reaction to the storm is worried about his wife and everything at home. Also bibi and him are soaked and full of mud which makes him uneasy of what his wife will say.(Takes the can shrimp happily) Calixta does not notice the storm at first because she is busy sewing and cleaning clothes. She finally acknowledged the storm and has an affair with alcee. Calixta needed to take care of her needs before
While I did not like the book, some of the facts where historical accurate. Like the USS Arizona sinking. The book stated many facts about the particular ship , however some of the facts were wrong. For instance the number of planes they said were off not by a lot but by some. On the other hand they stated that the ship was hit by underwater missiles, and in fact the ship was hit by underwater missiles.
