Charlie’s Journey

There is no greater journey than one must take to discover all of the mysteries that lie within. In the novel Flowers For Algernon, Charlie undergoes an operation that ultimately changes him. In the beginning Charlie is happy, and selfless in his ignorance, but eventually those emotions turn to shame and that is all Charlie is left with in the end. In the novel Flowers for Algernon, Daniel Keyes demonstrates the importance of being true to yourself, as seen through Charlie’s changes before, during, and after the operation.

Charlie Gordon is a 32 year old man with an IQ of 68. Charlie has always been eager to become ‘smart’ like other people, and be able to learn. Before Charlie was given an opportunity to become smart, he was happy and selfless. Charlie worked in Mr.Donner’s Bakery, and although his co-workers made fun of him, Charlie was unable to see that. Charlie was very childlike, but willing to work hard and make real friends. His spelling, punctuation, and grammar, increased, Charlie became more aware of his surroundings, and he started to understand his environment and relationships better. Charlie started to remember memories from his past, most of Charlie's memories is of his mother Rose, and how she abused him physically and mentally, because he was ‘stupid’. Now that charlie his this intelligence he became really self centered and all about himself. Before the operation Charlie was always working hard for what he wants, but now during this operation he doesn’t really care for much. This shows that before the operation Charlie was a completely different person. He was selfless and happy in his ignorance, but then during the operation he became selfish, and
