Since I am the youngest in my family and have no nieces or nephews, the birthing chapter was difficult for me to relate to since I have had no exposure to these scenarios. I’m sure there are a lot of other people in the class who have the same feelings as me when it comes to relating to birth; we have no experience or memories with these situations. Nonetheless, the pieces we read and viewed in this chapter did make sense and were interesting. There were two pieces that stuck with me the most out of all the readings in the chapter: Apnea and Simple Joys. Focusing on Apnea by Hunt Hawkins, I found this piece particularly interesting because to a certain extent I can see myself being like this father with my own child. Although the poem focuses
Sleep apnea is a common sleeping disorder where a person has experiences of not breathing during sleep. Over 20 million Americans, mostly overweight men, suffer from sleep apnea. Despite these numbers, sleep apnea is often not treated directly because its symptoms are thought to be those of depression, stress, or just loud snoring. There may be a genetic component to this disorder as it often occurs within families.People with sleep apnea stop breathing for at least 10 seconds at a time; these short stops in breathing can happen up to 400 times every night.
Sleep is essential to life; it is one of several components, including food and water, which keep the living alive. However, a significant percentage of the human population has considerable difficulty reaching and maintaining Stage IV within their sleeping patterns, the stage that allows the mind and body to fall into a deep and restorative sleep, otherwise known as REM sleep. At the core of this difficulty is a condition known as obstructive sleep apnea, a "serious, potentially life-threatening condition that is far more common than generally understood" (Sleep Apnea). Indeed, obstructive sleep apnea can be very dangerous if it is not properly detected and treated.
This chapter really helped open my eyes in a unique way. For years I have worked with children and whenever I would pick up a book most kids would moan and groan. But what I noticed is that by half of the book students are at the edge of their seats, and excitedly respond to my questions. In my mind it never crossed it to think about how babies respond to be nurtured. Like most humans I enjoy watching other people, or being aware of my surroundings you could call it. But I remember one instance of a mother and her child shopping in the grocery store. The child clearly was not able to talk back to the mother because it was too young. The mom however talked to the baby the entire time. Discussing what they were there to get, what colors
Although I was very hesitant to come to last night’s class I’m glad I did. I wanted to take anxiety meds before-hand but I didn’t have any left. The concepts of pregnancy and childbirth are uncomfortable for me because I’m adopted. I’m not sure if it was me being overwhelmed with the topic or what but I feel like it was rushed and I’m not sure how much of it I absorbed or understood it. There was so much terminology when it came to the infertility solutions.
The dictionary defines sleep as “The natural periodic suspension of consciousness during which the powers of the body are restored” (Webster’s 638) If one is waking up on an average of 300 times per night, the chances of complete body restoration are minimal. The Greek word apnea literally means “without breath”. An estimated 30 million Americans stop breathing during their sleep sometimes 30-40 times per hour and often for a minute, or longer each time. Of these, about 20 million are in the early stages, and about 10 million have progressed to a level of severity that requires treatment. According to the National
Description: A sleep disorder in which breathing is repeatedly stopping and starting do to the brain not sending proper signals to the respiratory muscles, which are the muscles that help you breathe.
In a relatively healthy human body, the CO2 in the bloodstream is held in a tight range and commands the automated breathing rate through the medulla oblongata and pons, which are portions of the brainstem. Let's say the CO2 level in the blood elevates for some reason, the brain stem will react by raising the number of inhalations per minute to blow off the raised CO2. If the CO2 level gets too high, and the brain determines it's an emergency then coma will follow.

Apnea is frightening for parents as breathing stops suddenly and a baby may become limp and blue. Breathing usually restarts after a few moments and gentle stimulation of a baby, stroking their face or moving them slightly, can encourage a quick recovery unless the child is otherwise ill with pneumonia or heart failure. Before a baby leaves the hospital, discuss with the medical team if you wish to monitor your baby’s breathing with a pulse oximeter or apnea monitor. Monitoring your baby might be a wise precaution and you can request information about resuscitation techniques if your child does not breathe after stimulation. Some parents might choose to complete a CPR course before leaving the hospital.
