Have you ever thought of the branches of government? In many opinions including mine I say that the media should be the Fourth Pillar/Branch of Government. The reason why the media should be the fourth Branch of Government is because one its the First Amendment and the right for people to know whats going on. Second it should be the fourth branch is because of how the media is changing opinions in the government and the people. Last is that the media should be the fourth pillar/Branch of Government is because the people and even the media say it should be. To start off is the one Amendment people know and that is the First Amendment. What the First Amendment say’s that we have the right to the freedom of speech, the freedom of the press and lastly the freedom of religion. With this Amendment it’s one part of the first 10 Amendments in the constitution. Also this means that with the first 10 they can not be changed or the government cant get rid of them but the government is able to add …show more content…
The reason is people have the right to know what is going on in the government and also that freedom of speech is one of the main amendments in the world that makes our country have good and bad things. In the article/USA today it say’s about the government that it should be the fourth branch plus how it helps with other branches it say’s “There are three branches of government – executive, legislative and judicial - that make, enforce and interpret laws and public policy. The media tell the people what the three branches of government are doing. Just as the three branches have a system of checks and balances that keeps one branch from wielding too much power, the media are the watchdog of all three branches, and they keep the public informed of the government’s activities – both good and bad. Without the media, people would know little about what our elected officials are
The First Amendment prevents the government from making any laws establishing an official religion, or forbidding the practice of any. It also stops the government from suppressing the citizens freedom of speech; letting them say what they think, feel, and sharing their opinions freely. American citizens have the right to publish information in books, television, magazines, and newspaper without government's intervention. Citizens are also allowed to gather privately or publicly and peacefully promote or express their ideas. This amendment also gives people the freedom to petition, which provide citizens the right to ask for changes or adjustments in the
The United States government braces its power among three powerful branches, legislative, executive and judicial. These branches interact with one another to establish authority that is strong, yet equal to have power over the country. Each branch pursues certain responsibilities and duties to operate in an efficient and effective manner in which society upholds. The executive, legislative and judicial branches all interact amid each other to validate accuracy of the nation’s most powerful law of the land, the Constitution. It is important to know how these branches interact with each other to learn how a bill becomes a law. Reflecting on how the three branches promote a balance of power that is constructive to include the agendas and
Directing 30 Rock, writing for Saturday Night Live, and taking care of her newly born child certainly did not stop Tina Fey from writing a book. With years of being in the television business, the comedian decided to test out the literature field with an autobiography titled Bossypants. The book talks about her childhood adventures, how she became a writer for Saturday Night Live, and what directing 30 Rock was like.
Initially reporters have a bias of their own while writing a story, and whether they realize it or not they are implementing their own opinion. Although breaking up oversized media outlets wouldn’t solve this issue, it is still necessary to mention that there is bias in every story. Applying to oversized media outlets, journalists must take their rough draft through several editors. If the editors don’t think the story will represent their company properly, they can change the story to better fit the company’s ideas or completely kill the story. By the time they get their story back it may or may not hold the same meaning that the writer intended. If a story wasn’t already changed enough, the government may on a rare occasion may step in. The government has thrown media owners and reporters in jail in the past for being too critical on touchy subjects such as war(“Media”, AntiCorruption). American government and media have become so connected that media giants will not effectively question the government’s actions. Overall, breaking up the giant media outlets will cut the connection between government and media and reduce the amount of censorship that a story undergoes, therefore resulting in a more honest, unaltered
The relationship between the United States government and mass media can be described most accurately as a relationship between siblings. Media as the younger sibling is always watching government, waiting for a moment to either praise or report of older siblings wrongdoing. Despite any tension, the United States government has historically protected the media. This protection has come through the use of legislation like the 1789 postal act and the newspaper preservation act. These protections were allowed as the government saw media as an essential component of democracy and to establishing a literate nation. However, this symbiotic
The Executive branch is the federal and state government whom is responsible for supporting, and enforcing the laws that are made up by the legislative branch and is also interpreted by the judicial branch. The executive branch includes governors and their staff. The federal level includes the president, vice president, staffs of appointed advisers and a variety of departments and agencies such as CIA, FBI, EPA and the Postal Service. The executive branch also appoints federal judges such as those of the Supreme Court. The executive branch guides the nation’s foreign and domestic policies. The legislative and judicial branch exercise their checks and balances on the executive branch by limiting its power. The concept of separation of
The media could be determined a tremendous and powerful weapon. If used properly, it can provide society with great benefits, but if used in negative ways, it can destroy. In a modern world where information can spread as fast as wildfires, a reason to monitor or limit types of media appear rational, but along with that, irrational cases still exist. This argument has circled in the United States for a while and a decision needs to be made. Parents and citizens around the United States think concerningly about what our eyes witness on the news, in stores, on billboards, etc. When the government determines what appears in the media, it not only belittles citizens, but it denies the First Amendment, which states the basic rights of an American. Censorship of the media, as displayed in 1984, clearly exhibits the violation of the First Amendment, rightfully given to the citizens of the United States, by the founding fathers of this country.
We have 10 amendments. The first one is freedom of religion, speech, and the press. An amendments to The Constitution of the United States of America guarantees the right of free expression. This includes freedom
The branches of government serve to check if the other branches of government are abusing their power in the government. In part, the media has served to put
The quality of life today for most Native Americans is drastically lower than that of the average non-Native American. Why? The United States federal government failed to continue the upward economic trajectory of the Native peoples. The aid and reconciliation Calvin Coolidge desired were not continued successfully. Instead, it is evident that while the Department of the Interior and the Presidential administrations after Coolidge have have had empathy and a desire for the Native Americans’ good, they mis-target the needs of this people group, and created numerous unwanted side-effects.
They made us aware of what was going on in the government and the problems that has impacted our history and our future. The media tells us information that we, as America’s people, want to know what’s happening in the government. So in a way, the media should be and is known as the fourth branch of government. The media in comparison to the other branches of government basically watches what they all do and when something happens, the media reports it to us immediately whether it’s good or bad. If it wasn’t for the media, all history books that have ever existed probably wouldn’t be so filled with information of every single thing that has impacted America. We should be thankful that we have these reporters that keep us informed about all these
The First Amendment of the United States Constitution was adopted into the Bill of Rights in 1791. This amendment protects the right to freedom of religion, and freedom of expression from government interference. It prohibits any laws that establish a national religion, impede the free exercise of religion, infringe upon the freedom of the press, interfere with the right to peaceably assemble, prohibit citizens from petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances, and arguably, most importantly, prohibits government suppression of the freedom of speech.
The media plays huge roles in democracy. To begin with, the media ensures that the public and citizens at large gain access to information which helps to make citizens informed and this in turn helps them to make better choices (Benjamin et al). The media acts in the capacity of an informer by providing citizens with credible information that is not biased and letting them make informed decisions. Democracy holds that the people must be informed. Secondly, the media serves as an eye on the elected members and ensures that they honor the offices that they have been elected in and serve the people that elected them well (Benjamin et al). The media mediates between the people and the governing body and ensures that people participate
The media has been a vital component in informing the public. With the little resource that was used, such as the newspaper, it was enough to spread the word. Although it was important for the public to be aware about their environment, the information has been stretched to influence towards a specific opinion. The media has a massive amount of influence, and it has served as surveillance over the executive, legislative, and judicial branch. It is considered as the fourth branch because the amount of influence it has on the public that has placed it as, part of the other branches.
"Freedom of the press is guaranteed only to those who own one." This quote by A.J. Liebling illustrates the reality of where the media stands in today's society. Over the past twenty years there has been an increase in power throughout the media with regard to politics. The media's original purpose was to inform the public of the relevant events that occurred around the world. The job of the media is to search out the truth and relay that news to the people. The media has the power to inform the people but often times the stories given to the public are distorted for one reason or another. Using slant and sensationalism, the media has begun to shape our views in society and the process by which
