To be free means to be American. To live in a country where people are all treated equally; to live in a country where people cannot complain about basic needs. In America, people can say the word free, and without a doubt know what it means. Every person in America has these freedoms that are so withheld and denied in third world countries. The people of America have freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of education, and freedom of press. Hook: Every person in America has these freedoms that are so withheld and denied in third world countries. a. Thesis Statement: American’s should know what it means to be free, they are all free compared to other countries, Americans also have what people in other countries dream about and yearn for, freedom. II. Body a. Main Point 1Topic Sentence (TS) Education is a freedom in America that many third world countries still yearn for. i. Evidence In America every child and every adolescent has an opportunity to be educated. Many Americans take education for granted, for they simply don’t fully comprehend the value of having an education. Unlike students in Pakistan who have to fight for their education. Americans have free education. Pakistan dreams about having free education. As a student of Pakistan, Malala Yousafzai said in her “Speech at the United Nation”, “I am here to speak up for the right of education of every child. I want education for the sons and daughters of the Taliban and all terrorists and extremists”
Education surrounds partially the entire world. Children, women, and men all attend school in America to build knowledge in order to find a job and make money. However, there are some places around the world where only men have access to education. For instance, Pakistan; located in South Asia, numerous amount of girls do not receive the education like other girls in America. This is specifically a problem for children, especially girls in Pakistan because they are not going to school like the girls in America, achieving the same level of education. Instead, they are seen as weak and are restricted from doing many things that men are allowed to do, like playing sports, going to school, participating in public events, and even being seen in public. Malala, a girl from Pakistan, sees the educational inequality where she lives and decides to fight for her educational freedom. Malala’s establishes her emotional appeals, credibility, and statistics to promote education for children in Pakistan by revealing her struggles fighting for
Preliminary Thesis: I will persuade future American generations that freedom is a privilege. We Americans need to stop taking our freedom for granted because there are people who wished to have the opportunity to be free the way we do.
They are not allowed to go anywhere without a male relative. Breaking these rules brings severe punishment, which may include public whipping or even execution.” (6) This is a challenge because the taliban are against girls so they don’t have the right to get a career or walk by themselves. Career is important because you need to be able to take care of your family and afford food. Finally one of the hardest challenges was that Malala and the other Jewish girls couldn’t get an education. The text states, “In January 2009, the Taliban ordered all girl schools to close. That included Malala’s school, which her father had owned for more than a decade. It was devastating news. School was one of the most important parts of Malala’s life-and a luxury she never took for granted.” (7) This is a challenge because the taliban are against girls so they don’t have the right to get an education or live normal. Education is important because if you are no learning you won’t know how to read or have a conversation.
Foner emphasizes on the diverse interpretations of freedom, and based on people’s lived experiences within American society, it can represent different things. Since it has no fixed definition within the article, Foner views freedom as a concept and states “by its very nature is the subject of disagreement” (xiv). People’s worldview can help shape what freedom means to them and it may limit what freedom means to others. Although the Declaration of Independence promotes all humans having unalienable rights given by the creator, which are life , liberty and the pursuit of happiness, not all americans are able to enjoy those rights in American society. As American societal norms constantly change (eventually),
“I don’t mind if I have to sit on the floor at school. All I want is an education,” said Malala Yousafzai, Pakistani activist for female education. In today's society, many people don’t realize how grateful they should be for the education they receive. Even the slightest education is much more than people were receiving just three centuries ago, and even more than people in countries besides the United States of America. In specifics, women and African Americans were once unable to pursue any form of education in the United States, along with many other ethnicities.
Malcolm X once said,” You can’t separate peace from freedom because no one can be at peace unless he has his freedom.” This means that for a man to be happy, he has to have the right to choose. “Land of the free” means everyone in a nation has their freedom. The US endured many hardships, both politically and socially, to become “land of the free”.
We, the American people, boast about, telling the world how we’re free and amazing. The title, the home of the free and the land of the brave, isn’t the best description. Throughout our history, freedom hasn’t been exactly free. Slaves, women, and people that didn’t own land, weren’t free. Freedom at one time in our country meant that everyone below you wasn’t free, but because you were then that meant the country was as well.
Freedom, is one of the greatest things on Earth yet only a few people experience it. Webster’s Dictionary defines freedom as: “the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action.” Around the world, people will live their whole lives without being completely free. I am fortunate enough to live in a country that is free. I am very thankful that I live in America, because having freedom is what makes this country great.
Children around the world are hungry for learning and will do anything like Malala Yousafzai, whom Taliban shot as she is an educational activist, she sacrificed her life, so that Pakistani girls could attend
America, Land of the Free...” For most, just saying the word, America screams out freedom.
To be free, is being able to do what you want to a certain extent, with some rules. Being free means having all of your rights, not having them jeopardized or taken away. Many don’t have the opportunity to be free or have rights and are limited with the many things they should be able to do. All over the world we should have the same rights and have the same ability to be free. Although, there are some rules and laws that should be followed.
People have many different interpretations of the phrase “what does it mean to be free”.
To attain true freedom, I believe that a person should become free from barriers first that sometimes don’t seem like barriers. America is known as the “land of the free”, but when it comes to whether or not Americans have true
Freedom has a large range of meaning. The encyclopedia Britannica defines freedom as “the quality or state of being free, and the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action” (Britannica). In the American society there is a lot of emphasis on freedom, and the right to be free, but one must question to what extent we are truly “free”.
Education might not be the cure of the world’s problem but it’s important to be knowledgeable. It’s important to have an education because without it, it makes a person vulnerable to be guided in the wrong direction. Not everyone believes education is important in life and especially for a woman. Malala Yousafzai tells us her story and her fight for education in her book I am Malala. She tells us about her families struggle for the right of education and not just education in general but education for woman. She was raised in Pakistan and its one the counties in which some people believe a woman should not go to school or have freedom. Education was not as easy for her as other girls around the world. Sometimes people don’t take education as a privileged but as a right, but unfortunately it’s not this case everywhere and it wasn’t the case for Malala. She was also able to see by firsthand how illiteracy can be a danger to a person and how others can take advantage of it.
