What do you think Steinbeck says about the theme of friendship in Of Mice and Men?
Of Mice and Men may be the most thrilling, suspenseful story of its era. The theme builds on friendship. How are some of the characters are lonely? Also how Steinbeck portrays friendship in this novel. What I think this book is about is having life long friends and, is it always the way to go even if you have to do something so bad I will end the friendship.
To begin with, I think that what George did went beyond friendship, he was fully aware that it was just a matter of time before someone killed Lennie or the law would one day catch him
In the Of Mice and Men friendship barley exists, the only people that are considered as friends are Lennie and George. George is always bragging on Lennie, even if he is not smart but he can work extremely hard (Steinbeck 39). Slim, a guy that also works that the ranch, tells George that he does not know how a smart guy like him and dumb guy like Lennie are friends and have been traveling together (Steinbeck 39). Even though George cannot stand Lennie since he is dumb, he defends him from anyone that tries to insult him and treat him like he was crazy (Steinbeck 39). Lennie and George were born from the same town (Steinbeck 40). After Lennie aunt died, George started to take care of him (Steinbeck 40). No one friendship was as well as Lennie with George (Steinbeck 40). Candy another man that lived there, at the farm, is trying to be friends with Lennie and George, since they killed his aged dog now (Steinbeck 61).
As he has no family or relatives he knows, his dog is his closest companion. After Carlson offers to shoot the dog to “put the old devil out of his misery” and Candy reluctantly agrees, he feels upset and lonely as his only companion is gone (47). Just a short while later Candy overhears George telling Lennie about the dream, and he asks if he can join them in the dream and offers to contribute money. As Candy says, “s’pose I went in with you guys. Tha’s three hundred an’ fifty bucks I’d put in.
George and Candy have Lennie and his dog to keep their company. However other ranchers are unlike them because they don’t have any company like George and Candy. They use their money to eliminate their loneliness at Susy’s place. George and Candy get rid of their loneliness from Lennie and Candy’s dog.
George could do much better without Lennie and have an easier life but he never leaves Lennie because he cares about him. In the opening dialogue between George and Lennie, the nature of their relationship is easily distinguishable: George tells Lennie not to drink too much from the lake because he worries for his health “’Lennie!’ he said sharply ‘Lennie for Gods’ sakes don’t drink so much... You gonna be sick like you was last night.’” (5). George has to look out for Lennie on things that would appear to be childlike mistake. They have a relationship almost like a parent and child. But George never shows that he minds much because he is usually able to stay calm about Lennie’s actions. George finds jobs for him and Lennie and even runs from the police when Lennie does something bad. Before they came to the new farm Lennie had held onto a woman’s dress and caused her to scream in fright. George helped Lennie get away and he didn't seem like he was too angry with Lennie. Lennie knows he can always trust George to be there and help him
George and Lennie have a very odd friendship in my opinion. George tries to takeover and do everything for Lennie. On page 21 and 22, George was interviewing both himself and Lennie for the job when he introduced both of them and told the boss what they are good at. When the boss asked about Lennie not talking, George said that he wasn’t much of a talker but “he’s sure a hell of a good worker. Strong as a bull. (Page 22) . George talked for Lennie because he didn’t want him messing up and not getting the job. George also lied about being Lennie’s cousin and told the boss that Lennie wasn’t very smart when he said “He got kicked in the head by a horse when he was a kid. He’s

George decided to be with Lennie even if he caused him trouble, because at the time people were in fear of each other and it was rare to find such an honest and kind friend with whom a person can share the thick and thin things in life. Furthermore, when George is alone with Lennie he can be himself without putting any mask. With Lennie George could be sometimes a little bit dreamy, when he narrates to Lennie about the ranch that they will own in the future, but if he did this kind of talking with anybody else they would think he is crazy or that he dreams too much. The end of this camaraderie was tragic, when George was left with no other choice but to kill
