At the risk of offending golf purists everywhere, I must ask, could cycling be the new golf. It’s early Saturday morning and rain or shine you see them everywhere! Road Warriors - hardy folk, dressed from head to toe in lycra, clipped in to sleek racing machines, going FAST! Saturday morning, once the preferred time slot to hit the links and tee off has now become the preferred time to spin, mash, grind and attack. And if you look closely, you will notice that a growing number of cyclists are middle aged men, once the key demographic for golf.
The Oxford Dictionary recently coined the term MAMIL to address the explosive growth of Men in Lycra. MAMIL is defined as, “a middle-aged man who is a very keen road cyclist, typically one who rides an expensive bike and wears the type of clothing associated with professional cyclists.” Like the golfers before them passionate about their game and intent on showcasing the latest club or long distance ball, cyclists too have become obsessed with accessories. From laser beam LED bike lights to high

A non-profit club with a strong commitment to fundraising initiatives, Gastown Cycling encourages friendship and fitness through cycling. Sergio has been riding since the 1980’s and is currently a Director serving on the Club’s Executive. He has witnessed first-hand the dramatic growth in his sport. Over the years Sergio has seen the sport became increasingly social. As we chatted about some of Sergio’s favourite rides, it quickly became apparent to me that the “pit-stop” coffee break location was an essential component to route planning. The majority of the Club’s weekend rides are 80-90km long, so a well-timed coffee break and social gathering makes the effort that much more enjoyable. From recreational cyclist, weekend warrior, biker commuter to competitive racer Vancouver is the place to

“Vasquez, thirty miles!” I yelled as I passed the counter’s desk. My legs are on fire, my heart is pounding, and my shirt is drenched in sweat. The sun is beaming, the temperature has reached 95⁰F and I’ve been riding my bike non-stop for three hours earning twenty dollars an hour. I would always find myself in this scenario every September when I attended High School, this was the Saint Jude Bike-a-thon.
* The variances are due to the Mile High Cycle company not forecasting for increased production. The company budgeted for the production of 10,000 cycles but the actual production was 10,800 units. When the company increased production, the production efficiency decreased. The company had to use or rework parts that added extra cost to the expenses; the reworked parts added $25,000 of extra expenses to the wheel assembly production and $45,000 to the final assembly process. In, “Why Booming Distance is Ruining Golf,” the author, Ben Alberstadt, explores the idea of how “shot-making” on the PGA Tour is now non-existent and it has become all about monster drives and impressive approach shots. The author begins by stating some facts that show how driving averages are increasing at an unsustainable rate. In 2011 the PGA tour average driving distance was 290.9 yards and three years before that it was around 287.3 yards. Alberstadt continues with, saying that golf ball distances have also gone up which in turn is costing courses money. This
First, Carly and Macy held a bake sale, but didn’t earn the funds they imagined. The next year, they decided they would take on the task of just a 5k since both of them were a part of the West Delaware Girls Cross Country team. That year was highly successful; they were still missing something that could earn them so much more money though. After a couple years of pondering on what they could do, Carly and Macy decided they wanted to add a bike ride on after the 5k. Both Carly’s and my parents rode Ragbrai, so they knew they could attract more of an audience to help them pay it forward. By adding the bike ride, it allowed people who didn’t enjoy running or walking to do what they love and ride bikes. Ever since the bike ride was included, this day has been remarkable and continues to prosper by
Riker’s island is alleged named after Dutch pioneer Abraham Rycken, who moved to Long Island in 1638 and whose relatives claimed Rikers Island until 1884, when it was vended to the city for $180,000. The island was utilized as a military preparing ground amid the Civil War. The Department of Corrections is an agency that is in charge of the supervision and administration of indicted detainees. The city communicated a craving to open a correctional facility for men on Rikers Island as right on time as 1925, with a specific end goal to supplant their overburdened and incapacitated prison on Welfare Island, now Roosevelt Island. The island is incorporate with numerous facilities, Rose M. Singer Center (RMSC), Eric M. Taylor Center (EMTC,

When people here the word ‘golf’ they often correlate it with a misleading sense of boring, elderly men and women who have nothing better to do. Believe it or not, there is a broader reason why so many retirees indulge in the golf lifestyle. Yes, golf is a lifestyle, not just a sport. Many people, most of whom know absolutely nothing about the sport, do not realize that playing golf regularly can add five years to their life span and also have many other well-being-related benefits (“Health” par. 5). Golf is a great therapeutic activity because it teaches good etiquette, it enriches the mind, and it provides for a healthy lifestyle.
Fourteen clubs - four wedges, six irons, a rescue, a three wood, a driver, and a putter - this is golf. It is one of the most mentally challenging sports in the world. It can fool beginners who are deceived by its simplicity. Golf is often underestimated by those who have never attempted to play the sport. While it has often been known as a “rich man’s” sport, in recent years this perception has begun to change. There are a number of other generalizations made when talking about golf, yet these are most always from those who have never experienced, played, or followed the game. One should question how a critic with no knowledge of the activity could state whether or not golf should be considered a sport. Golf is a sport, regardless of what any critic has to say. Studies and experimentation, along with the experience itself, reveal all of the athletic aspects that make golf better than most sports.
If an athlete who plays a competitive sport is asked if they would like to improve in their sport, the answer will always be yes. There is not one athlete that is satisfied with their current ability and they are constantly working toward the idea of “better”. In Roslyn Kerr’s Sport and Technology: An actor-network theory, she states, “there is an undisputed link between the goal of sport and that of scientists, with both groups searching for greater human achievement. In sport, this is often achieved through improving and enhancing already existing equipment and technology” (2016). Kerr goes on to state that one would think that these technological advancements would be
Re-reading the post that I shared, the one that came in from Detroit via The Guardian,” Pimp My Bike,” I thought about the city of Baton Rouge. In the article from Detroit the author pointed out the diversified group of participants at the rides that they put on, and how much fun was had by all. In my travels around Baton Rouge I, have noted the diversity of the cycling community in our fair city. Of those who use a bike daily, I have noted that there are those who obviously have little choice but to use a bike or walk for transportation. There are those who use a bike in conjunction with public transit to get around. There are also those who choose to ride a bike for transportation because it is
As I grow up, the rides become less frequent. I became more engaged with Uber cars, my cult of friends, and our daily cups of teas drank while musing over internet phenomenons. Nevertheless, I still step on the fat motorcycle whenever I can, just so I can hug mom and look at the city I love. While riding the Might One II, Che Guavara realized the perils of inequality South American and returned home to start a revolution; while on mom's fat motorcycle I realized how my home city had revolutionized the definition of diversity and the person I am
