Colors mean more in literature than one may think. They are used to give hints of what is actually meant by the author and also to show what kind of situation the characters are in. Colors can also be used to show irony and foreshadowing. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, color symbolism is used throughout the entire novel to illustrate the ideas of the American dream, disillusionment, and innocence. Fitzgerald uses white, gold, and green to depict more detail about each character and how they feel about one another. The first color used to further describe a character is white. White is a color that represents innocence and purity. It is used to represent Daisy Buchanan. Daisy is meant to appear to be pure. She is meant to seem innocent. The color green symbolizes hope. More specifically, it symbolizes how Gatsby never loses hope in his dream of one day being with Gatsby. Fitzgerald uses the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock to show how Gatsby’s hope is always there. “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us” (p 180). He thought as long as the light was there, he still had a chance with Daisy. The only problem is that eventually all lights turn red, and Gatsby eventually loses his chance with Daisy and then later loses his life. Overall, color symbolism depicts a lot about the characters and how they really think. Fitzgerald uses colors to show us that everyone has more to them than meets the eye. He uses colors to allude to things that will happen or that have already happened. Without color symbolism, one would not know that Daisy is materialistic and not as innocent as everyone thought, that wealth was so prominent in most of the characters lives, or that Jay Gatsby was so full of hope until the very
