The dependent variables in my research project are the questions asked in the survey. This consisted of four questions.
One of the questions were How do your race and gender impact status in American society? (q162). The answers that were able to be selected were “My race matters more (1), my gender matters more (2), My race and gender matter equally (3), or Neither one matters much at all (4). The operational definition is trying to measure the self-report of how important gender and race impacts people’s status. This is a good operational measure of my concept because used in cross tabulations with race or gender it shows if more people who are impacted by their race and gender notice that it does impact people’s status in American society.

The answer options were “Strongly disagree (1), Somewhat disagree (2), Neither agree nor disagree (3), Somewhat agree (4), and Strongly agree (5). This provides the operational definition of measuring how people think media plays a role in the way we have insight on how the hierarchy of people are set up. It can show if those at the bottom of the social hierarchy are able to see media can affect status in America, before those at the top of the hierarchy. This is a good operational measure because it is able to ask people through self-report of how they feel about media showing status in …show more content…
The definition of race was from Race12 within the code book and was recoded. It was recoded as those who were white and Native American/White were coded as 1 which is labeled as White. There were those who were Black only and White/Black were coded as 2 which is labeled as Black. Asian only, Asian/white were coded as 3 which is labeled as Asian. Asian/Middle Eastern or Asian/Black, Middle Eastern, and Middle Eastern/White were not coded within the recode of race. I am only looking at the Whites, Asians, Hispanics, and Blacks for this study. The last group was comprised of Hispanic only, Hispanic/White, and Hispanic/Black they were coded as 4, which is labeled as Hispanics. This is the only was to measure the way people view themselves, so it is a good measure of my concept. It is an important part of my experiment. I have to notice the race and gender of those taking the survey to answer questions of colorism and, how people see social rank dependent on their rank in social
Throughout history, women have been regarded as of lesser value than men particularly in the public sphere. This is the result of gender stratification. Gender stratification refers to the issue of sexism, “or the belief that one sex is superior to the other” (Carl et al., 2012, p. 78). The theory that men are superior to women is essential to sexism. Sexism has always had negative consequences for women. It has caused some women to avoid pursuing successful careers typically described as “masculine”—perhaps to avoid the social impression that they are less desirable as spouses or mothers, or even less “feminine.”
Gender roles refer to the set of social and behavioral norms that are socially appropriate for individuals of a specific sex. Gender roles are never comprehensive, even within a single country, and they are always historically and culturally unpredictable. Gender roles in the United States for one cultural group likely is not true for another cultural group. Similarly, gender roles in the United States have changed drastically over the time period. Gender roles has been the historical evolution from a single family income in which only the male spouse works and generates income, to dual family income or a family in which both spouses generate family income. The shifting gender roles in the past years has been huge. It happened so quickly
Sexual characteristics inequality has been extremely diverse and wide spread. Women and men are disproportionate in every possible way in never-ending circumstances, both instant and durable, by both idea criteria and prejudiced experience. Therefore, what tally as gender difference in family life, education, workplace and politics? These social structures are assembly on the base of the masculinity and femininity, gendered role and gender identity society label to men and women.
Gender plays a substantial role in how Chicanxs and Latinxs live their lives in the United States. Despite that both men and women who identify as Chicanxs or Latinxs, have had a very rough time feeling accepted and respected in the United States, gender is one of the many factors that contributes to how these individuals live out their lives. Hegemony in gender roles contributes to the different lifestyles both at work and in society of Chicanx and Latinx men and women in the way that women and men are expected to live up to the traditional gender roles. The living experiences of male and females differ greatly based on their gender; this goes to say for both Chicanx and Latinx men and women born in the United States of immigrants.
Throughout life every man and woman fits into a specific gender role. We are told what is expected of men and women from birth until death. Many people influence our view of how we should act and what we should say such as our parents, friends, and even the media. Males and females play very different roles and these differences are apparent in our every day lives. These differences are not the same as they used to be. Society has changed the way it treats men and women over time.
America is typically at the forefront when it comes to modern thinking; however, when it comes to gender roles, America is falling behind. Since we do not see many if any females in higher government positions, the younger generations of females begin to believe that it is not the norm for a women to be in those positions. Because of this the younger generation of females do not strive for those positions. Lili Gil who is a Entrepreneur, Multicultural Strategist, and Cofounder of XL Alliance, cover this issue in her article entitled, “The Gender Crisis in Politics: U.S. Congress Fails at Equality.” This article, published May 26, 2012, covers many different aspects of this situation. Her article talks about how other countries have progressed
Gender roles are sets of societal norms dictating what types of behaviors are generally considered acceptable, appropriate, or desirable based on their sex. The concept of gender roles are quite simple, yet can be very biased towards both genders. Men and Women are equal enough to where a woman and a man can do whatever their mind wants to accomplish. Believing that you can do anything you want will always help you to succeed in life. I do not believe in there being such things as "male jobs" or even "female jobs." Having gender roles is very comical. At the end of the day, as long as the job is completed, who cares what gender it took to get it done. How effectively do you feel, that the US could be ran, if gender roles were never an aspect
In the media specifically shows in United States are the typically represented some gender roles of men and women. Men are depicted as successful individual, bread winner of the family or the one that provides good things for the family. They are capable of everything and they represent men as strong and independent roles. Men roles are the superhero who will do everything to make everything perfect. Men are supposedly represented with honor competitiveness, with power and self-reliance or sometimes objectifying sex. Nonetheless, the roles of men in other shows illustrated more successful and more capable in doing more things than women. Consequently, we typically watch women as a mother who take cares of the family, the household chores
Throughout time gender is something that has been constantly changing due to people becoming more acceptable with who they really are. Today's times there is plethora of what someone may consider themselves as. Like whether they identify as male, female, transgender etc. Society has become more acceptable with the idea and since then gender roles have changed. because this is something that is constantly changing gender roles for a transgender person they may take on the responsibility of caring for the household , being finan1cially stable and caring for the children. "Ischomachus, I said, this is just what I'd like to learn from you. Did you teach your wife yourself what she needed to know or did she already know everything she was supposed
Over the years, the perspectives of men and women have continued to be polar opposites. From the time we are children, society portrays gender as men being controlling and unemotional while women are the opposite. Young boys are brought up to “become men” and to adopt the roles society forces on them while women are dehumanized and portrayed as submissive to males (The Mask). These roles have altered slightly over the years but have always been separated by the characterized gender roles in society. Women are to be working in the kitchen and keeping the home, children, and man happy while the man of the household is the breadwinner and comes home to a wife making dinner while he rests from
Kamala has struggle most on the culture and gender identity. Living in an America is a nightmare to her. She said I don’t know what I supposed to do, and she don’t know who she is. This is a biggest challenged to her. Kamala came to the American which her parents, and were started learning American cultures how they associated, and interact to each there. The kind of food they eat, and how to cope and associate with her friends. The main thing for here is to meet the expectation of her friends. It was hard for her trying to belong to the American cultures. However, she was a Muslim with a Pakistani culture. Based on the history, the Muslim policy and their rules were clearly different with others religions. Kamala has been disobeyed her parents,
For many years now, women have had to fight for their right to be considered equal human beings in a state of law. Although the Women’s Suffrage movement did incredible things for the female race, did it solve all of America’s gender inequality issues? On a legal stance, yes, but in an everyday practice of social norms, there is still work to be done.
Gender roles are described as the role or behavior learned by a person as appropriate to their gender, determined by the prevailing cultural norms. There is an unique quote from and old German expression that reads “Kinder, Kuche, Kirche” said by emperor Wilhelm II and referring to a woman’s place in German society, as he saw it. Dr. Kobeil- Elbert a geological scientist states that “The beginning of geological research in a modern sense occurred around 1800. In Germany, the early professionalization of geology and a rigid female gender model, idealizing female household duties and motherhood in a climate that was hostile to intellectual women, effectively eliminated the
Everyone has a desire to push the boundaries and to find who they really are. Different people take different approaches to doing that. Some people chose to find a “gender” that they can connect with and understand. Consequently, because of people’s choices they make in life cause tension between them and others. There are two sides when it comes to gender identity: the people that believe that they should be able to express themselves through gender identity and the people who feel that there should only be females and males. According to Facebook, users used to have to choose between male or female. In 2014 Facebook has added at least 58 different genders to its site. (Goldman).
The United States has been dealing with race and gender issues for a long period of time. As of today it still exists all over the United States. Women in the past did not have many rights and a voice where they could give their opinion about anything. They were seen as someone who was needed to be home all the time, take care of their children and also take care of her husband. If we take a look at the 19th amendment it states that men and women were provided with equal voting rights. Before this was passed women were denied key rights enjoyed by males such as, women could not own her own house, they did not keep any of the money they were earning since they had no "permission" and no female could vote. From this event we
