The government of Myanmar has been accused of covering up violence and genocide against its religious minorities after more than 100,000 Christians fled to Malaysia to escape religious persecution and are now living there as refugees.
According to one of the Burmese Christians who fled the country, Myanmar is no longer safe for them. The same person said there were people who were either killed or thrown in prison for their faith, TRT World relays.
“Myanmar isn't safe for us,” a Burmese Christian refugee said. “They killed people, sent people to jail because of religion.”
The civilian government of Nobel peace prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi has been accused of religious violence and genocide against Muslims, Christians, and other minorities.
The situation depicted by Suu Kyi in Burma is of political injustices; the rights of the Burmese to free and fair elections in a democratic nation are negated by despotic leaders who do not practice the Buddhist traditions. According to Austin (82) Suu Kyi became the voice of the people and through her the masses have seen the authoritarian rule which is not acting in their best interests. King presents the social injustices that the blacks and the minorities in American society face. The
From the dawn of time to even now, genocides have been happening throughout history. Some earlier genocides have not even been recorded or documented. Genocides happen because one group wants complete control and absolute power of another. People can be killed for having different ideals or being different. Knowing this, one could see that genocides only end with senseless and brutal discrimination and death. From 1975 to 1979, Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge carried out a genocide in Cambodia killing all people who seemed to oppose them and their communist government (“The Cambodian Genocide”).
January 30, 1933 forever marks the beginning of the Holocaust, one of the most horrifying and cruel events in the history of the world. It was the mass genocide of millions of innocent jews, gays, Jehovah Witnesses, gypsies, and countless others. After the Holocaust, it is clear to society that we, as people, cannot stand by and watch as other human beings suffer from cruel acts in which they have no ability to defend themselves. In modern day, it seems as though ethnic cleansing is becoming less common, however, there are still many instances of it occurring around the world. In fact, the country of Myanmar is currently attempting to deprive its Rohingya citizens of their basic rights and exterminate them from the population.
Many of the ancient and historical conflicts are believed to be connected to religion in a various ways and proven that religion can be used as an excuse for violence. For instance, The Crusade Wars ended in the brutality of both Christians and Muslims during the mass dispute (Burton 1984). The Jews have perpetrated massacres through nations for the solitary reason to attain their belief. During the reformation of Christians thousands of people were killed because of their religion. In Yugoslavia, the war in 1991 pitted Orthodox Christians, Muslims, and Catholics against each other in a brutal combat (Avalos 2005). Also, thousands of monks were being persecuted in Burma
Logan, Lara, Jeff Newton, and Richard Butler. "Iraq's Christians Persecuted by ISIS." CBSNews. CBS Interactive, 22 Mar. 2015. Web. 13 Aug. 2015. The main point in this article is to show how far ISIS has gone to eradicate Christians in Iraq; they are causing deleterious effects on Christian towns. Christians have been living in this area for almost 2,000 years and more than 125,000 have been forced out of their homes. The author is trying to spread awareness of things going on in the Middle East. Monasteries that have been there for almost 2,000 years and have perpetuated several empires, invasions and conquests are now feeling threatened by ISIS. They are using Nazi techniques
In 1975, approximately 2 million former government employees, army personnel and intellectuals were executed in the hands of the Cambodian leader, Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge, while others were killed by disease, exhaustion and malnutrition (Document 2). Similarly, in 1989, students in Tiananmen Square were murdered as machine guns shot “right at the chests and heads of the students” (Document 3). In the Rwandan Genocide of 1994, approximately 500,000 people were raped, tortured, beaten and killed; and the UN Security Council failed to reinforce the troops they sent as their mandate restricted them from stopping the killing. However after the genocide ended, the UN attempted to hold prosecutions for crimes against humanity that occurred during the genocide, but national prosecutions seemed far-fetched as the “Rwand[an] justice system [was] destroyed” (Document 4). The many heinous acts that have been committed thus far may be viewed as stepping stones to improve, as society learns from its
On Mar. 6, the rebel Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army attacked Myanmar police and military forces in Laukkai, leading to the death of 30 people. The violence also caused the people of Kokang to flee from the region. Chinese paramilitary forces, on the other hand, have reportedly sent reinforcements to help in disaster

("Persecution of Christians in the contemporary world.") Young children are being kidnapped from Christian families in the Middle Eastern countries to be raised as Muslims. Children that have well enough memories to still believe their faith are put with their families and most likely killed. ( "Persecution of Christians in the contemporary world.") A recent story tells of two dozen Iraqi Christian refugees who escaped from the Middle East and across the U.S. borders. After coming into the U.S., they were refused any shelter or food; debates are being held if the refugees should be removed or not. The debate is held for the reason that there is not enough room for twenty-four people, but there is for ten-thousand Syrian
Religion has its shares of promoting violence. Many will argue that a cause of religion wars is for economic and political reasons, but others argue that those who start wars are, by definition, not religious. In reality, separating religion out of economic and political motives can be involved in such a way finding religious motives innocent of much. Excuses for Christianity responsibilities cannot be accepted whether the person has misappropriated the message of Christ. The primarily set of doctrines is not Christianity, but by living through past background it personified the visible actions of Christians. In other words, Christianity, Islam or any other religion has no intention of excusing from survey. Given certain conditions,
The leaders include the president of Burma, Thein Sein, and a famous politician of the country, Aung San Suu Kyi. The two groups comprise of the Sangha, which is a community of Buddhist monks, and the Rakhine Nationalities Development Group (RNDG), which is a political party in Myanmar. In 1991, Aung San Suu Kyi won the Nobel Peace Prize for forming the National League for Democracy and coincidently disapproved of violence and hoped that all ethnic groups could “cooperate in harmony.” Since then, she has denied any evidence of an ethnic cleansing, when asked about it in an interview and she has talked about the Rohingya Muslims, stating that “They are not our citizens.” The president, Thein Sein, has done many things to contribute to the ethnic cleansing. He has come up with ideas to end the ethnic cleansing, such as “expelling” the muslims from the country or getting the United Nations to “resettle” them somewhere else.
Before that time, they had been a British colony since 1885. After fourteen years as an independent country, they removed their government in 1962 and finally adopted a new constitution in 1974, becoming a socialist republic. Shortly thereafter in 1988, the country’s welfare turned into a brutal military government and the military established a State Law and Order Resolution Council (SLORC) to govern the country. Finally, in 1989 the country’s name changed from Burma to Myanmar, a name change that would parallel a change in the way the people of Burma would appreciate their lives prior to 1988.
According to opendoorsusa.com, a cause of persecution is the lack of human rights. Human rights are very significant in persecution because it takes away your freedom or religion, assembly, and freedom of expression. Our faith define who we are as Christians.
