Geoffrey Chaucer
Geoffrey Chaucer was a poet, a writer, and of course a diplomat. Geoffrey Chaucer was born in the early hours of 1340s to John Chaucer, a vintner and assistant to the king's butler. As a boy, he was a leaf to the Countess of Ulster. (Lombardi) Chaucer was the most famous for writing his unfinished Canterbury tales. (Geoffrey Chaucer) He was born in London, only problem is, the exact date and place are unknown. From his writings Chaucer emerges as poet of love, both worldly and heavenly. No information exists about his early education, although without a doubt he would have been as good in French as in the Middle English of his time. Some people collected the sixteenth-century editions of Chaucer's Works. He set the goal line for all other English authors, including, presentation, quality and success of actually printing. The Canterbury Tales were written and pieced together in the late 1380's, early 1390's. The author of the book is Geoffrey Chaucer. When considering the structure of the tales, one can deduce that they were put together using Framework Narrative, a very unique style of writing. The opening prologue speaks of 29 pilgrims, including Chaucer, who are all on a pilgrimage to Canterbury. All of them are seeking a certain shrine for spiritual cleansing, and relief. The journey was to be long, but in the end it would all be worth it. Chaucer's social views and prejudices are revealed through his description of the pilgrims in The Canterbury Tales.
Geoffrey Chaucer became a famous writer in his twenties. He wrote The Book of the Duchess which was completed in early 1369. Chaucer wrote Canterbury Tales in his later years, and no one knows for sure why he changed his style of writing so drastically. There are various types of writing that he uses in the Canterbury Tales such as romance, comedy, rhyme, prose, crude humor, and even religious mysteries. There were only twenty four out of one hundred and twenty pieces that were completed before Chaucer died. In Canterbury Tales, Chaucer uses satire to question the church and the relationship between men and women.

But it was enough for him to buy himself food and clothing, in 1359 Geoffrey went to fight in the hundred year war in France. Later at the rethel Geoffrey was captured at rethel, and Because Geoffrey had royal connections the King Edward III helped pay his ransom. After being released Geoffrey joined the royal service, he traveled throughout France, Spain, and Italy. After that King Edward III gave him 20 pension marks. He was the son of John Chaucer and Agnes Copton. John Chaucer was a very successful London wine merchant, but soon died in 1366. His wife Agnes got remarried to another Chaucer, said to be a cousin of her late husband John. “Just where the boy got his schooling is not known; he may have been at either Oxford or Cambridge, or neither.” (Kunitz & Haycraft 98). Not much was known about his early life, but through his various pieces of work we can conclude that he was able fluently read French, Latin, and Italian. “Although there was proof that Chaucer could read and write before he went to school” (historylearningsite.co.uk). He was taught by one of his father 's clerks who enlarged his income by teaching as one of his side jobs. His family home was known to be in the area of St. Martin, on Thames Street. John Chaucer was raised up in a well-to-do family environment, the family not being too rich or too poor.

Chaucer was born in the 1340s into a family of London-based vintners. He spent most of his adult life as a civil servant, serving under three successive kings—Edward III, Richard II, and Henry IV—and much of what is known of his life is derived from various household records. In 1357 he served as a page to Elizabeth, the Countess of Ulster and wife of Prince Lionel, the third son of Edward III. In 1359, while serving in Edward's army in France, Chaucer was captured during the unsuccessful siege of Rheims.
In 1368 Geoffrey Chaucer became one of King Edward III's esquires. His held spot in the community sent him on diplomatic missions, also giving time to get himself known with the work of poets such as Petrarch and Dante.
