MODERN REALIA OF THE UNITED KINGDOM (UK)
GEOGRAPHY OF THE UK
UK is an abbreviation of “the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland” (which is the political name of the country). The country is made up of four constituent parts – England, Scotland, Wales (Cymru in Welsh) and Northern Ireland (sometimes known as Ulster)∗. 1. The shield is quartered: the top left and the bottom right quarters depict the lion rampant of Scotland; the top right – the three lions passant guardant of England; the bottom left – the harp of Ireland. The crest atop the Crown of Scotland is a red lion, seated and forward facing, itself wearing the Crown of Scotland and holding the two remaining elements of the Honours of Scotland – namely the Sword of State and the Sceptre of Scotland. Above the crest appears the motto, which is an abbreviated form of the full motto: In My Defens God Me Defend. The National Anthem of the United Kingdom is “God Save The King”. It was a patriotic song that dates back to the 18th century. The words and tunes are anonymous. In September 1745 the “Young Pretender” to the British Throne, Prince Charles Edward Stuart, defeated the army of King George II at Prestonpans, near Edinburgh. When the news reached London the leader of the band at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, arranged “God Save the King” for performance after a play. It was a tremendous success and was repeated nightly. Elizabeth’s relationship with her people is built on faith and love, not fear or tyranny. In the beginning of her speech she addresses the soldiers as "My loving people." She refers to her troops as "faithful" and "loving," showing the appreciation and loyalty that she has for her soldiers. She feels she must acknowledge the important bond between herself and her soldiers by showing them that she is not just a distant queen. To assure her troops of her faith in them, she uses logos in her speech to encourage her soldiers to fight for the good of England. For example, she lets them know by saying "... I have placed my chiefest strength and safeguard in the loyal hearts and good will of my subjects." She uses repetition of the word “I” and “We” to show that she is not just a queen but a fellow Englishman. “…to live or die amongst you all; to lay down, for my God, and for my kingdom, and for my people, my honor and my blood, even the dust”, shows that she is a part of the people and will fight side by side with them to defend their country. This would be the first thing that her soldiers fight for, a people and ruler relationship that is bound by love and trust.
Cronulla is a beachside suburb in southern Sydney, it is located 34.0574° S, 151.1522° E which is 26 kilometres south of the Sydney CBD (see figure 2). It is governed by the Sutherland Shire Council. Cronulla’s coastal environment is on the Kurnell Peninsula, which is made up of a tombolo. A tombolo is a sand spit connecting a rocky outcrop or island to the mainland. So this forms a barrier between Botany Bay and Bate Bay. The two areas of study visited were Wanda Beach and the Greenhills Beach development.

When an expected invasion of England by the Spanish Armada was imminent, Queen Elizabeth realized that the only way that the kingdom could become triumphant was to rally her people to stand with her to repel their enemies. Queen Elizabeth begins her speech by addressing her people, beginning with “My loving people.” Although many citizens of England disliked the Queen, she addressed them as though the nation adored her, giving the illusion of unity. The Americans begged the British by addressing to the king to "Give [them] liberty or give [them] death" (Daniel 167), which was used to protest in the speech of the Revolutionary warfare. This declares that the people will fight for their rights, justice and freedom from Great Britain. This means sacrificing their lives for the upcoming generations to receive their victorious rights. Although, the colonists protested and spoke with the rulers of Great Britian, the people were still unheard.
The UK is a sovereign country of almost 61,000,000 people comprising the nations of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. A highly evolved democratic country
The United Kingdom is a country located in the North West of Europe that has four parts, England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The capital city is London, which the River Thames flows through from Thames Head to 140 miles later at Teddington Lock where it ends. Compared to the United States, the United Kingdom is quite small in fact it is approximately the size of New England. Despite being diminutive in size, there is layer upon layer of cultures and history. Also, it has geographic diversity, from the moors of Devon to the swamps in the southeast to the highlands of Scotland. Although dwindling, many native languages survived and still spoken to this day. Some of those are Celtic, Irish, Scottish Gaelic, and Welsh.
The United Kingdom, the gem of Europe, has offered more to the world than just a stable government model. It has proven to be successful economically and a professional when it comes to Foreign affairs. The United Kingdom is triple generator powerhouse consisting the best of the best from England, Wales, and Scotland. The United Kingdom is not only a revolutionary when it comes to the economy, but also in music, literature and sports.
