Across the world, children and teens do homework after school. Many people expect homework to be a healthy educational learning tool, but is it really? No, I believe homework is something we need to get rid of. Instead of making it easier to learn, it is creating stress and medical issues with students, finally, it doesn’t affect academic success. Why exactly?
Surprisingly, too much homework a night can result in stress. According to “Homework can have an Impact on Kids Health,” more than 30 minutes a night can cause children and teens to become more stressful the next day. In addition to so much homework, parents get stressed with their kids having afterschool sports and afterschool activities knowing they have homework to do. For this
Having too much homework causes students large amounts of stress and lack of sleep that can cause health problems. On a survey that Stanford researchers tested on 4317 students, fifty-six percent of the students considered homework a primary source of stress, forty-three percent of the students viewed tests as a primary stressor, thirty-three percent put pressure to get good grades in that category (Parker). Less than one percent of the students said that homework was not a stressor (Parker). That means that about 4273 students considered homeword a stressor, while less than 50 out of 4317 students believed homework to not be a stressor. Out of the students surveyed, the average amount of homework was three hours and six minutes of homework (Greicius). The large amount of homework causes large amounts of stress, but it also causes sleep deprivation and other health problems such as headaches, exhaustion, sleep deprivation,
Not only does homework help student but also it creates interaction between teens and parents. However, statics has shown that even though homework is a way to refresh what students have learned, it also create stress for students. Homework has shown its benefits for student but most of the time when student is given a homework it’s likely he/she will not do it. They believe it’s stressful, and when they can’t get the right answer, they gave up instantly instead of keep practicing. According to researchers, they believe that when student do more homework they get better grades and do well on the test/quizzes that were given. Even though homework has many advantage toward students, it also has disadvantage. Which include having too much homework and these things could lead to mental health issue toward students.
When lots of homework is given to an student it can cause stress because not all students understand all the homework given. This also happens because some students don't pay attention in class to understand how to even do homework. Something else that causes this to happen is that some students wait for last minute to do homework because they don't understand it. Stress isn't good for students body because when it came to stress, more than 70 percent of students said they were “often or always stressed over schoolwork,” with 56 percent listing homework as a primary stressor. Another reason why HOMEWORK GIVES STUDENTS STRESS is because a group of Australian researchers found that when more time was spent on homework students were getting lower scores. My last reason why HOMEWORK GIVES STUDENTS STRESS because the group of Australian researchers also found that too much homework can also cause lead pupils to begin suffering from depression. This is why HOMEWORK GIVES HOMEWORK
The first reasons why we should get rid of homework in schools is children are overtired. This reason is important because being too tired is very bad. Children need at least 8 to 10 hours of sleep to get a proper education and children sometimes stay up to or past one o'clock from
When a class is almost over and a teacher starts assigning homework, every student's heart drops. When students have an excess of homework, they do not do as well. Even though homework is a good tool to help teachers teach students subjects, teachers should give less homework because too much homework causes mental health issues in students and less homework helps improve test scores.
In many American households, homework is the main cause of stress. Some people think that America is not so well and adding more homework will fix that problem. A study by Indiana University found that students who do more homework tend to get higher scores on standardized tests” (“Do Kids Need Homework?”). “Plus, part of growing up is learning to balance outside activities and the demands of schoolwork” (“Should Parents Help Kids With Homework?). Teachers have their reasons as well. “Teachers say homework is important in the learning process and can help kids develop study and organizational skills. They say kids need to practice what they've learned in school so that the material sticks in their brain” (Strauss). “Having too much homework
Having the stress of finishing homework almost every school day can have a toll on students who can't handle this much tension and strain each night. Students and children don't usually get as much sleep as they should when they have homework, for example, “During the school week, she averages three to four hours of homework a night and six and a half hours of sleep” (Greenfield). This explains that students that spend too much time on homework and lose sleep time each night can affect kids later. Losing sleep is not a healthy thing for students who need to wake up early and go to school. Since students spend so much time on homework, it can cause different forms of depression, ¨I can’t remember the last time I had the chance to go in the backyard and just run around,’ a teenage girl laments in the film. ‘I’ve gone through bouts of depression’ from too much homework, another confesses. A bewildered-looking third girl says: ‘I would spend six hours a night on my homework.’”(Hancock). This proves that homework can cause forms of mentally challenging issues or less sleep. Most kids go through depression and having something like homework that you constantly have can not be a good thing. Homework stress can cause many mentally challenging problems for students and other problems like this can be caused by too much
The negative consequences it yields come forth in multitudes. It gives teachers an excuse to not improve their teaching skills but rather assign homework to make up for squandered class time. Hours spent on homework leaves students with hardly enough time to spend on extracurricular activities, personal interests, family gatherings, and sleep. The stress it produces often leads to depression, physical health problems, unhealthy coping mechanisms such as drugs and alcohol, self harm, and suicide. An ample amount of research has been done that substantiates homework’s harmful impact towards a child’s educational progress and emotional growth, yet it is repeatedly ignored. For something with such hazardous risks to be viewed as an essential constituent of education is absurd. Our nation is essentially valuing education before life itself. Teachers should not be given the ability to deprive children of necessary developmental experiences by assigning extreme amounts of homework, and parents should not sit around allowing it to happen. In order for children to become truly educated they need to experience the world and what is has to offer, not be cooped up in their bedrooms for hours on end completing futile
One of the reasons why homework should not be given to middle school students is because it causes sleep loss. Students have so much work to do that they have to stay up all night to finish it. Craig Canapari, a pediatrician specializing in the care of children with sleeping and breathing problems says, “The combination of heavy homework loads and early school start times is a major cause of sleep deprivation and consequent stress in teens.” In the article, “Does Too Much Homework Cause Sleep Deprivation?”, it says, “A clear side
Homework should be kept in schools because homework helps kids reach higher achievement by extending learning beyond the school day and, increasing their advantages. According to Marzano, a researcher in education, “...the most important advantage of homework is that it can enhance achievement by extending learning beyond the school day.” This shows that children who do homework learn more than children who don't because they spend more time doing work outside of school than other children do. Another way homework helps kids with higher achievement is that students who don't do their homework will not see any increase in their achievement in
Many kids around the world think that schools should ban homework. I think that homework is not benifical for students who don’t need it. Why? One, sometimes not necassary homework can cause stress on kids wich could lead to health issuses. Two, when homework isn’t benifical for students it takes away time from other important things.
For the most part, education in the United States has revolved around the idea of a “work hard, and succeed” system. Educators strongly push for this idea and are in a way obliged to extend learning by assigning more work, which they are unable to complete in a school setting. In turn, they rely on homework to expand knowledge beyond the classroom. Homework has become what may seem a positive influence on education and test scores in the United States. However, It has also become one the biggest burdens on high school students. This burden fails to reflect today’s advancing technological society. It needs to conform to a more individualized and purposeful approach for students.
Now onto fourth grade when old friends were leaving and new friends were arriving, and our classroom moved to a different hall. Homework gradually became harder, tests and quizzes were given every week, and don’t forget the multiple projects we had to do. One project we had to do was the “State Project”, and so I picked Missouri because that summer before I went to St. Louis. At this point in my life I was still growing, in height, but I was literally a “string bean” (really skinny) and very dysfunctional; that didn’t stop me from playing basketball though. I was ok at basketball in the fourth grade, but I was zooming down the court like a wild child, now a days I can barely make it down the court without breathing really heavy. Oh boy, fifth grade was a doozy, I had Ms. Barker and let’s just say me and her didn’t see eye to eye on a few things.
Many professions involve options for employees to work from home. The line between work and family is starting to become nonexistent. Small-scale artisans and subsistent farmers are similar to people working at home when it comes to the blending family and work.
Every afternoon as I twist the chilled metal doorknob, I dread what will come next. I know my afternoon and night will consist of four to seven hours of homework and studying. It’s always a mystery of how late I will have to stay up doing homework. However, it gets worse. On weekends I have to plan my whole schedule around homework because I get so much and I have to dedicate one day (half) of my weekend just to homework. Do you come home from school with loads of homework for each subject? Do you have four big tests all planned on one day? Do you get so much homework that you have to stay up late? Do you have to plan your weekend schedule around homework? Do you have no choice but to cancel most of your plans due to homework?
