It’s been a subject of news reports both local and national: the opiate drug epidemic in central and northeast Pennsylvania is skyrocketing and Geisinger Marworth is stepping in to do something about it.
Geisinger Marworth offers a variety of alcohol and drug rehab programs and services to meet the unique needs of individuals and families struggling with the disease of addiction. With Inpatient and outpatient services as well as newly added detox spaces, recreational therapy, a fitness center and a Therapeutics Activities Program Marworth is uniquely positioned to address and provide critical care addiction treatment. With continued support and generosity from caring donors like you, fewer people could become addicted, and countless lives could be saved.
Probably one of the most profound ways that donors support Geisinger Marworth is providing financial resources for patients who cannot afford to attend the program. The Gift of Hope fund provides scholarships for nearly 75 people each year who otherwise would not get the treatment, counseling and guidance on their way to sobriety.

For Greg Petrocelli of Bellmore, New York, the Gift of Hope scholarship could not be more aptly named. “I had decades of alcohol and drug abuse under my belt, and a family history of addiction and mental illness, before I went to Marworth. I was in such a dark place, ready to die, and using drinking and drugs to get me there,” he remembered. He was able to attend Marworth thanks to funds from the Gift of Hope. “And that’s what I have now, I’m filled with it: hope. I can’t begin to tell you how much my life has changed since my treatment,” With your help we can provide patients, like Greg, with the tools they need to turn their lives
Heroin and opioids have grown in appearance in communities. Since, 2008 in Allegheny County alone there was more than two thousand overdose deaths, with one hundred-seventy-seven deaths in this year alone (Pennsylvania). Furthermore, in 2015 there was only one -hundred-twenty-six;
Attention Getter: Imagine 60,000 people in one city, all dealing with the same problem, addiction. According to an article written by Carter M. Yang for ABC news on March 14th of this year, there are 60, 000 people in Baltimore alone that are addicted to illicit drugs. These numbers are disheartening and unfortunate. I can relate to every one of these people struggling with substance abuse, because I am an addict. A program called Narcotics Anonymous has
Service is simply an act of helpful activity and the transferable skills that are gained from service illustrate the importance of being involved. By volunteering in my community and taking part in organizations that are centered on service, I am able to strengthen my understanding of my surroundings, and I am taught more compassion for others. Being involved presents unlimited opportunities to give back to others, and with the skills instilled by service, I am able to make a difference in the lives around me. Experience gained with service creates characteristics in a person that can shape the direction of my life, and I will value that in the future.
Various levels of governments in different communities across North America have initiated programs to deal with the opioid epidemic and its effect. Some of these initiatives will be examined in more details below.
Many people may not realize this but multiple states, including Michigan, are facing an epidemic. It is not a disease, however, it is a heroin epidemic. In a country where addictive opioid pain-killer prescriptions are handed out like candy, it not surprising heroin, also known as smack or thunder, has become a serious problem. The current heroin epidemic Michigan is facing, as are dozens of other states, has spiraled out of control in recent years. In Michigan, some of the areas hit hardest by this drug are in the southern portion of the state, like Wayne, Oakland, and Monroe Counties. The connection between painkillers and heroin may not be clear, but this is because both are classified as opioid drugs, and therefore cause many of the same positive and negative side effects. As a country, we are currently the largest consumer of opioids in the world; almost the entire world supply of hydrocodone (the opioid in Vicodin) and 81% of the world’s oxycodone (in Percocet and OxyContin) is used by the United States (Volkow). Along with consuming most of the world’s most common opioids, we have gone from 76 million of these prescriptions in 1991 to 207 million in 2013 – constantly increasing except for a small decrease starting in 2012 (Volkow). This widespread use has caused numerous consequences from increasing emergency room visits – for both painkillers and heroin – to sky-rocking overdose cases all over the country (Volkow). Michigan, unfortunately, currently has one of the
I am extremely thankful to have the opportunity to receive this scholarship. The "My Biggest Success" scholarship would help me with my journey through college in many ways. Considering the fact that my mom is a single parent with a low income, I never thought I would get the chance to attend college because of our financial situation.
This article discusses political realities that have researched scholarship, and action consequences in the field of Black studies. This includes the academy, a changing political economy, Black studies ideology, and Black studies for a new century, and it interconnectedness to the other issue, centering gender and interrogating the theory and practice of Black women’s studies.
Athletics has helped shape who I am as a student and as a person. To be selected for the Carl Montavon Memorial Scholarship would be a great honor that I would feel privileged to receive. Carl Montavon was a huge supporter of athletics among high school students, and I am as well for multiple reasons. Not only have the sports that I have participated in helped me physically and socially, but educationally as well. Participating in multiple sports helped motivate me to keep up my GPA for future college recruiting, and fueled my competitive drive into striving and succeeding to become valedictorian of my high school’s graduating class. Athletics taught me responsibility and respect. Not only do I value others opinions, but I make sure
My internship, Friends of Youth, is closely connected with Lakeside Milam Recovery Centers and I therefore decided that would be a great place to learn more about incase I needed to refer any of my clients to them. In order to gain more information about Lakeside Milam I spoke with the administrator, Dan Labuda and the director of the inpatient facility in Burien, Mary Fredrickson. Dan provided me information about Lakeside Milam as a whole, while Mary gave me an intake look at inpatient treatment and gave me a tour of Lakeside Milam.
The program is conducted around shared experiences, strength and hope, through individuals who are recovering from their addictions.
As a result on this alarming phenomenon, deaths related to drug overdose saw a material spike upwards as recently as 2013. The number of deaths (13.2 for every 100,000 residents) earned the state the dubious honor of being ranked #19 in the nation for said deaths. In order to keep these numbers from getting worse, residents and their representatives need to start working together to develop prevention programs while making sure those who are suffering from an addiction have reasonable access to treatment and
Even with the city of Cumberland trying their hardest to stop this epidemic their efforts are not enough. However, they are doing a couple of things to help. The first thing their doing is they have a methadone clinic. “A methadone clinic is a place where a person who is addicted to opioid-based drugs, such as heroin or
This program consists of following a set of recovery steps, which will help one achieve abstinence of alcohol. One can also get a sponsor, which will help guide them through all the steps. The program is completely free the only requirement is the desire to stop drinking. As nurses or any health care provider I think it is our duty to provide this type of information and to help educate others on how the program helps maintain sobriety. It’s important for a nurse to provide support with their client through this journey and also to their family and friends. Nurses need to provide encouragement and explain that this is a process that will take time and not happen
I am very grateful for your contributions to my education at Valencia College. The only thing that can prevent me from pursuing my educational goal of earn a bachelor’s degree in Dietetics & Nutrition from the University of Florida is my mindset. I have made up my mind that I will strive for a 4.0 GPA every semester, search for additional scholarships, make connections, and become involved within my community because I know that I can. As a first generation college student of immigrant parents, I understand that there are so many excuses to reasons why many choose not to further their education like the cost of living and tuition being one of them. There are several avenues and helping hands at Valencia College for driven students that are taking advantage of the skill-shops that offer life skills about financing, career readiness, and getting ahead in college,
October 24th, I visited Bridgeway Recovery Center in Salem. This is a big program that helps people with serious addiction, either substance addiction or gambling addiction. And it is the second of the 100 best nonprofit Oregon business in 2015.
