Gilgamesh As An Epic Hero Essay

An epic hero is a protagonist whose life is a series of well-marked adventures which typically change the hero into a better, more refined person. These heroes are typically characterized by courage, strength, honor, and the hardships they endure and eventually overcome. An epic hero can even be known to risk his or her life for the good of others. Gilgamesh and Achilles are perfect examples of what an epic hero truly is. They are both able to become successful despite their flaws and go on to become powerful men.
Gilgamesh was two parts god and one part man. Many considered him to have far more power and strength than he was able to handle. He was a fierce, ruthless warrior and King who loved his country. The people of Uruk become afraid of …show more content…

They were strong warriors who had extreme potential. Their character flaws however create setbacks. Each of these heroes had a close friend who died. For Gilgamesh it was Enkidu and for Achilles it was Patroclus. When these men died, our epic heroes were sent over the edge. Their means of grief were very different though. Achilles took a more emotional approach. He fasted, smeared himself with ash, beat the ground with his fists, and was emotionally distraught for days. The epic states that he utters a “terrible, wrenching cry” that his own mother hears him and approaches him with the water nymphs to learn of what is upsetting her son. After recovering from his emotional state, his anger then motivates him to return to battle. Gilgamesh however, refrained from outward emotions and instead went on a quest to help determine where exactly his friend went after passing.
After reading the stories of Gilgamesh and Achilles, I was better able to understand what an epic hero truly was. An epic hero is someone who is strong, courageous, successful in battle, values honor and glory, faces hardships, fights off those hardships, accepts challenges and achieves his goal. Gilgamesh and Achilles both display all of the above
