To begin with, many literary devices were used in the book The Help, Girl in the Green Sweater, and To Kill a Mockingbird. However, in the three books, theme was the most used device that recurred, without any questions. The theme that is acquired in each book would definitely be the racism and discrimination which takes places in the stories and the year they occur in. Also, the discriminated race that is treated unfairly in the Girl in the Green Sweater, are jews, while in To Kill a Mockingbird and The Help, the discriminated group are the African Americans. In addition, in the book, Girl in the Green Sweater, the author, Krystyna Chiger, uses the theme of racism, in the most superlative ways as possible. The whole book was established around the theme of racism, since the nazi groups (Gestapo and SS Regime) were attempting to exterminate the jewish religion/race. Furthermore, Krystyna Chiger accurately uses discrimination to hook the reader in certain scenes of the book. For instance, when the group of jews were in the sewer pipes with Socha, a German man goes into the sewer system to check the pipes. That alone hooked the reader and engendered fear in the reader for what could potentially happen. The group of Jews were huddled in the corner of a pipeline, hiding from the sewer worker. Then, a fellow Jew strikes a match to light a cigarette, which compromised the jews and gave away their hiding spot. Also, if there was no discrimination against jews at the time, the
Harper Lee uses symbolism extensively throughout To Kill a Mockingbird,, and much of it refers to the problems of racism in the South during the early twentieth century. Harper Lee's effective use of racial symbolism and allegory can be seen by studying various examples from the book, namely the actions of the children, of the racist whites, and of Atticus Finch.

The mother seems to be the main character in this essay uses a very strict tone to her daughter. The daughter is being told about how to do things in her life the correct way. The daughter barely speaks during this essay, she is doing more analyzing than arguing with her mother. When the mother gives the daughter advise she was trying to give her words of wisdom. But, at the same time, some of the ideas the mother gave to her child was offensive like “slut”. The mother has different perspectives throughout this essay with a lot of different
In the book, The Help by Kathryn Stockett, the main theme throughout the book is racial prejudice. The book is about a privileged 22 year old girl whose name was Skeeter. She dream was to become a writer so she began to write stories of black maids working in white family homes. All her life she has been told what to believe in and what to think about certain things, but while writing these stories she realized she was able to think for herself. Skeeter was different from the other white girls. She kind of became an outcast among her friends and her community because of the rules she was breaking. Skeeter only wanted to become a writer, but she hoped that the book she wrote would make people understand that there is not much of a
In “The Parable of the Good Samaritan”, the priest and the Levite fails to act in the name of God, while the Samaritan does by treating the robbed man’s wounds and sending him to an inn. At the beginning of To Kill A Mockingbird, Scout Finch acts as the priest or the Levite than the Good Samaritan. When Walter Cunningham is invited for dinner at the Finch’s house, Scout behaves in a discourteous manner towards Walter and claims that he “ain’t company… He’s just a Cunningham,” (Lee 25). This quote shows how Scout lacks in understanding the discrepancies within people while she should be regarding everyone as her neighbour like the Good Samaritan. The quote also reveals that Scout’s attitudes are rooted from her biased views towards the Cunningham’s.
To Kill A Mockingbird is a book that a reader can turn again and again, gaining new insights and knowledge into life each time. Sometimes an author uses a motif- a frequently repeated incident or idea -to get a certain theme across to the reader. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Lee uses motifs to clarify her messages or insights about life. Three specific motifs that Lee uses throughout the whole story are the mockingbird, courage, and walking in someone else's shoes.
In many books authors use elements of literature to get crucial points across, such as how Krystyna Chiger did in her book, Girl in the Green Sweater. Using conflict, foreshadowing, and symbolism, Krystyna was able to explain and show her experiences during Hitler's regime (when most of the Jewish race was persecuted). When analyzing the data presented, one can see how the author was able to convey her message of struggle and survival that families in The Girl in the Green Sweater endured during the Holocaust, so that the reader could relate to the characters and situation using conflict, foreshadowing, and symbolism.
In 'To Kill a Mockingbird' many morals about the themes in the novel are portrayed through different issues and events. The major themes are appearance vs. reality courage, maturity and prejudice. Each of these themes has an event in the novel that help the reader understand its message.
Life is a precious thing, and it is so precious that some people will undergo severe anguish to hold on to it. During the 1930’s and 1940’s in Germany, people of the Jewish religion were diabolically oppressed and slaughtered, just for their beliefs. Some Jews went to extreme measures to evade capture by the German law enforcement, hoping to hold on to life. Krystyna Chiger was only a small child when her family, along with a group of other desperate Jews, descended into the malignant sewers to avoid the Germans. After living in the abysmal sewers for fourteen months, her group emerged, and when she became an adult, she authored a novel about her time in the sewer. When analyzing the literary elements utilized in her novel, The Girl in the Green Sweater, one can determine how tone and mood, point of view, and conflict convey the message of struggle and survival that was experienced during the Holocaust, and how they help the reader to understand and relate.
A theme from To Kill A Mockingbird is Racism. Because of racism in the book a innocent black male is accused of rapeing a white female. Racism affects a lot of people in this story by it changing the outcome of many different situations not just in a courtroom situation.
The first major theme in To Kill a Mockingbird is evil in society. The most evil act in this book is at the end; the attacking of Atticus’ children. In the end Bob
In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, many minor themes are present such as gender and age. However, the largest and therefore major theme of the book is racism. All of the events and themes in the book had only one purpose, to support the theme of racism.
In every literary work, there are themes. A theme is a broad idea, moral or message of a book or story. One individual may construe the themes of a book or story differently than another, but that is the pure beauty of themes. One great literary work is The Crucible, a play written by Arthur Miller. Succinctly, the play is about the Salem witch trials that took place in Massachusetts in 1692. Throughout the story, the townspeople indict their neighbors of being a witch and practicing witchcraft. On the surface, this historical drama has a few universal and enduring themes. Themes are universal because regardless of where in the world, the ideas still relates to everyone and is understood. Themes are enduring because the ideas are found
To kill a mockingbird written by Harper Lee. Themes are the subject of a talk, a piece of writing or a person's thoughts. There are many themes present in this great American classic such as courage, racism, prejudice, morality and of course coming of age. Lee communicates these themes with characters, events that unfold and the scenarios that Jem and Scout have to face.
In my opinion theme with the most impact in 'To Kill a Mockingbird" is Hypocrisy as shown in three main incidents . These are the teachings of Ms Gates about the atrocities of Adolf Hitler whilst she hated blacks ; the missionary circle trying to show how Christian they are while believing that to be a brother of Christ you must be white and finally the hypocrisy of the American court system in the 30's by saying they stand for justice.
Girls, young women, and mature mothers. Society has consistently given women strict guidelines, rules and principles on how to be an appropriate member of a man’s society. These rules are set at a young age and enforced thoroughly into adulthood. When not followed accordingly, women often times too many face reprimanding through means of verbal abuse, physical abuse, or social exile. In the midst of all these strict guidelines and social etiquette for girls, a social rebellion started among girls and women and gender roles were broken, however the social rebellion did not and does not affect all girls and women. For instance, in less socially developed places, young girls on the brink of womanhood are still strongly persuaded to be a man’s idea of a “woman”.
