Eyesight is the most important of the five senses. The world today revolves around being able to see and understand things. As the average age of the world continues to increase, glaucoma has become increasingly prevalent in the population. Glaucoma currently affects around sixty million people worldwide and is expected to affect eleven million people in two thousand twenty(Mohammadi et al. 3). Losing the gift of sight is unbearable to most people, but glaucoma can be treated if it is caught early enough. “Ocular hypertension is a condition where the intra-ocular pressure is above normal range of ten through twenty-one millimeters Hg. Topical and oral corticosteroids may also increase intra-ocular pressure, particularly in those patients with genetic predispositions to glaucoma. Thorough medical history is needed to make appropriate decisions for treating glaucoma (Lee and Higginbotham 692). Acute angle-closure glaucoma can sometimes also be caused by medications in a small number of people. Some of these medications include the following: eye drops used to dilate the pupil for eye check-ups, tricyclic or selective seratonin re-uptake inhibiting antidepressants, chlorophenamine, cimetidine, ranitidine, ipratropium, topiramate, general anistetic. “About one in one thousand people develop acute angle-closure glaucoma.” Most frequently it occurs in long-sighted people, women, people with an Asian background, and people who have relatives with acute angle-closure glaucoma. Acute angle-closure glaucoma usually occurs in patients between sixty and seventy (White 3). “Primary open-angle glaucoma is the most common type of glaucoma encountered in clinical practice in the United States.” It occurs insidiously and usually has no symptoms in the early stages of the disease.
