Gold Rush “Slavery, Gold Rush, what's next?!” Mom, dad, and I have never known what freedom is. We have been sent from slavery to the Gold Rush, my family has never been treated well. When we were slaves we worked for nine whole years, then we got sent to were the miners worked... It’s November 27, 1861, and the cold weather has already been really bad for everyone, especially miners. Our owner is one of the meanest ones there are. If he sees you take a one minute break then he will yell at you with his very disruptive voice. He gives us the supplies we need to find gold but it’s still super rough. The miners all have to work 24/7. My mom is the most curious about what’s going to happen …show more content…
It was hard to listen because of the other miners digging. “We nee feeom,” is all I heard, I knew that's not what they said but well that's what I heard. So then I just ignored them, but I wondered what they …show more content…
“Hear that?” Dad hit something with his shovel. There was a big loud noise were Dad hit the dirt with his shovel. We all looked at each other and started digging, it felt like a hour before we were able to dig the thing out. When we looked at what we dug out, it was like we were looking at a treasure chest full of a million dollars. We had dug out a huge gold nugget! We knew we had to show our owner, he would be so happy. But we wouldn’t feel any better about it. After we had showed the gold nugget to our owner we went right back to work, but the owner was very proud of what he got. I told him that it weighted exactly nine whole pounds! When we got out of the owners lodge back into the bitter cold snow I thought to myself, “Shouldn’t we get a reward for that?” The next day when I woke up I saw a pile of thing layed out in the mine, gold specks, change of clothes, first, and one more thing, a map. I asked Dad what the stuff was for. Dad answered, “It’s the things we need to escape.” I argued “Last time we tried to escape, we got caught.” Then, Mom chimed in, “But the guards aren't
When people hear the term gold rush it is automatically associated with California. The first, gold rush was in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. This was a tremendous impact due to people rushing to the Carolina’s mountains. People flocked from all neighboring states to strike rich. The second, was in Georgia a three ounce nugget was found. Miners began to search in every cave for gold. The third, gold rush was in California. Flakes of gold were found in the Sacramento Valley. The population expanded to 100,000. Locals benefited from the mast flock of miners. People have always been fascinated with gold and people are still searching for gold.
Gold is a very precious metal that with in any community is pressed very highly. To a surprise to several, after the United States won California from Mexico. A land owner had found several pieces of gold along the river bed of the San Francisco. Circumstances lead to this land owner not wanting to reveal this information to the world. Nevertheless, the information was spread so began the Gold Rush in California. This magnificent event gave light to great change but was it the right move for progress and growth for the new founded country the United States. Growth in my eyes is defined as the increase of wealth among all the population that is living in a general area. Wealth should be defined as in a way where a family can live with good
The goldfields were discovered in 1848 but the gold rush started in 1851. The first amount of gold was found by Edward Hargraves. Many people travelled from all around the world in hopes that they would find a lot of gold and become rich. For many people that didn’t happen, only a few people found a good amount of gold. Between 1851 and 1861 Australia produced one third of its gold. On the goldfields there was discrimination against the chinses immigrants and the Aboriginals. The miners had to carry a miner licence with them when working on the goldfields. The miners didn’t like that idea and fought back to stop them from carry it around with them everywhere they went.
The California Gold Rush of 1849 is one of the most interesting and exiting events of the United States. From the wild stories of men striking it big, to the heart wrenching tales of people losing everything, these are what make it so alluring. There are many aspects of the California Gold Rush; effects on California; individual stories of struggle; and effects on the United States as a young country looking for stability.
The California gold rush January 24 1848 was a very interesting time to be alive. In 1848 James Marshall was walking along the the side of the river of his job site where he was building a factory to turn logs into planks, he turned around to the site, but on the corner of his eye he saw something shiny in the water he picked up the shiny pea and realized it was
Gold Rush! Gold had been found about a year ago near Sacramento! I hope to find some in these months up ahead, so I can have a fortune and live the rich life with everything I could wish for! But for now, I have to stick to my trusty pan and sifter to work with me to achieve this dream. In the camp that I’m staying at, there are a lot of different cultures because of the immigration to find the gold by being prospectors, so the camp is mostly made up of young, able-bodied men. The food and supplies here are priced exorbitantly because of the amount of gold here. Just a loaf of bread cost almost a dollar! Luckily, I have brought along supplies from back East, so I can sell supplies as well to collect money to buy mining equipment to find some
Would you travel, live, and work under harsh conditions for months to fulfill a dream? Thousands of gold hunters from all corners of the world did so in hopes of striking rich after an abrupt discovery of gold in the American territory of California. This huge worldwide flock of people became known as The California Gold Rush of 1849. The Gold Rush granted riches to only a handful of miners, but provided Americans as well as many foreigners a new homeland and life.
Thomas Fuller once said “we never know the worth of water till the well is dry” (Fuller). As a species we need water to cook, clean, and most importantly live. With water being a natural resource overuse and misuses of it can cause its supply to rapidly dwindle down, and that’s exactly what’s happening in California right now. California's water comes a married of places such as aquifers, groundwater, surface water, rivers, reservoirs, dams and irrigation systems where 80% of that water goes towards agriculture and 20% to urban/residential use. California’s water supply is so substandard that the state can’t even say their predicament is a drought, but it can be classified as a crisis. And to add insult to injury the states infrastructure has
"The California Gold Rush was the significant national event of its time" ("California Gold Rush: A Look to the Past"). This legendary story begins with one man. John Sutter, one of the richest people in the area, moved to California 1839 with the intent on building his own private empire. Sutter welcomed newcomers to the area because he viewed them as subjects for his self-styled kingdom. In the late 1840s, James Marshall and about 20 men were sent to the river by Sutter to build a sawmill ("The Gold Rush"). It took him a while to find the right spot because, "nothing but a mule could climb the hills; and when I would find a spot where the hills were not steep, there was no timber to be had" (Holliday). Marshall had finally found an
Many folks that live in a dusty small town whoop and holler as they get ready to head out across a vast prairie in wagons that are in groups of four, while others load up all their belongings, and head towards the ships that will take them across stormy waters, and windy seas. These people are all heading out of town for the same reason, to find gold. The California Gold Rush was a time for success, glory, and of course gold. That is what most people believed considering it was a treacherous and extremely long journey to reach California and get gold that might not be found. During the beginning of the California Gold Rush, numerous people had the opportunity to strike gold and become extremely wealthy, but they had to undergo the challenges
by the middle of that year, and from then on, the rush west for gold was underway. In the next year, the news had spread across the country, and even President Polk began telling the nation about the gold to be found in California. People came in a mad rush from all over the country in search of fortune in the gold fields; some came from the military following the war with the Spanish, others came across land from the inner frontier, while still others came via the ocean, from the east coast and even Australia; it was truly a monumental movement of humanity, all fueled by the lust for gold and the fortunes it brought. Within the first few years of the strike, over 80,000
