“A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Conner is a southern gothic story with its setting in the bible belt, deep in the old south. On the way to Tennessee, a grandmother and her family run into an unseen predicament. Very old in her ways, the grandmother finds herself trying to match wits with an escaped convict called Misfit. A man sometimes says things he don’t mean” (O’Connor 429), implying that he himself may have done and said things he didn’t mean. As the events unfolded, Bailey and his family were brought out into the woods with several gunshots ringing off leaving just the misfit and the grandmother alone. The conversations tended to be of his upbringings and experiences such as being a gospel singer, being in the service and how he was incarcerated but he couldn’t remember why. During this time, she plead for her life and telling the Misfit of how he was such a good man and how Jesus could help him. His replies seemed as if he no longer had faith although he seemed to try to believe.
