Literary Analysis Essay: Macbeth Greedy and violent, these two words describe Macbeth, the main character of William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth. In the play, the three witches are what motivates Macbeth to commit murder after they give him a prophecy regarding his future. He is motivated to kill the current king of Scotland, King Duncan, but has thoughts of backing down. His wife Lady Macbeth urges him to do so, and is the ultimate factor that drives Macbeth to commit murder; however, the three witches are the ones who originally planted the idea in Macbeth's head. There have been many film versions of Macbeth that have been made where directors have tried to interpret Shakespeare’s reason for including the three witches. The 1971 version of Macbeth, directed by Roman Polanski, best illustrates Shakespeare’s reason for including the three witches. Polanski’s version uses techniques such as lighting, audio, and different camera angles in a way to inform the viewers the role the witches play in setting the dark and wicked tone, which ultimately leads to the death of Macbeth. …show more content…

The setting of the scene is in a gloomy open field which is right next to a battlefield, these actions of the three witches foreshadow evil, deception and death. The weather in the scene is dark and gloomy which helps set the tone of what's to come later. As the scene comes to an end, the witches start to say things that most people cannot comprehend such as, “fair is foul and foul is fair.” That creates more confusion and sets a dark tone.
