Gun control in America is one of the most fiercely debated topics in today’s political sphere. Nearly everyone has an opinion and there is a mind-boggling amount of information typically discussed regarding the matter. Media hot takes and campaign talking points aside, far too many lives have been lost to gun violence. A total of 12,902 in 2016, to be exact. The fact that more lives have been lost to gun violence in the United States this year than the 5,000 lost in the almost 10-year war effort overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan is appalling. Is sensible and reasonable gun control progress attainable in our near future? In the past few decades there been thousands of pages that are written seeking to uncover the meaning of the “the people,” and “bear arms,” have been strongly debated.

Imagine the world with only law enforcement offices and the United States Military with firearms. How would we be able to protect ourselves and our property? Some can use them for hunting, target practice, defense, or for a collection. As of now most people can go to a gun store, maybe pass a background check, fill out some papers, and come back with a weapon. If you buy it elsewhere, you might not have to pass or sign anything.

Republican lawmakers are encouraging law abiding citizens to acquire firearms and to defend themselves against acts of violence by criminals. On the contrary, Democratic lawmakers believe the only way to slow gun violence in the United States is to remove guns from society. While certain politicians believe strict gun laws would protect the American people, the proposed policies would make our nation more vulnerable

I am writing this letter in concern of the second amendment; discussing gun laws. The Bill of Rights states that, “the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” Gun violence unfortunately has become timeless and is at an all-time high in America. Many people take advantage of guns using and manipulating the tool with hardly any thought. Countless lives have been lost due to fact that people have been able to obtain firearms legally or illegally and have taken the notion to be judge, jury and executioner in holding ones live in their hands. This is a common issue that will continue if action is not taken as a nation to try and stop it. Gun violence can lead many citizens to believe that no place is deemed safe anymore and recent tragedies that have taken place in United States holds up that statement. Back in the day, most people believed gun violence only took place in the inner cities, but currently the epidemic has reached the suburbs and rural America. This epidemic has hit grade schools, high schools, school’s yards of inner-city schools and college campuses. Most times school shootings make the national press while threats to schools are not reported on the news as much. However, this has happened partly because of the irresponsibility of the citizens. Furthermore, due to this amendment, many terrorist attacks have occurred, many people have accidently gotten injured, and school shootings have occurred.
