With all of the recent publicized gun violence, America is being seen as an unsafe place with a firearm problem. For many years, the government has been talking about the implementation of stricter gun laws to help improve the crime rates and make America a safer place (C-SPAN, 2013). Gun laws in the United States are meant to control and regulate the possession, sale, and use of firearms and ammunition. Currently, the media is taking advantage of the present gun violence situation and it is creating a controversy between the American people. The perception is that firearms are the source of violence and not the people behind the weapon. To help improve the current crime rate and the safety of the public, the community should be educated on gun control and firearm safety. The implementing of stricter gun laws for gun control has not been as beneficial to …show more content…
Stricter gun control laws leave the law abiding citizens with the feeling of being unprotected. During a recent poll Americans were posed with the question of whether owning a firearm is a risk of their safety or if it serves as a form of protection. Hawkins (2015) stated that 40 percent of those people felt that ownership was a threat to their safety while 54 percent thought that ownership was beneficial against crimes. Many government officials have been strenuously trying to increase and bring forth new gun laws since the tragic school shooting in 2012 of the Sandy Hook Elementary School, but despite their actions the polls have increased by 6 percent since December of 2012(Hawkins, 2015). If the citizen’s capability to carry and defend themselves is taken away, criminals could be permitted to commit more wrongdoings, such as hurting or possibly killing people. These rules make it difficult for the regular American to fight back if a firearm situation were to
Many tragedies have occurred recently that have spurred the debate on whether or not we need tighter gun controls. On one side of the debate are the gun control supporters, who claim that the easy access to guns is the primary cause for high rates of crime plaguing the United States. On the other side are people who argue that gun laws will not prevent criminals from obtaining guns, since they will continue to get them illegally. Guns are used for protection when in the hands of people who obey the law. It is crucial to not hinder law-abiding citizen’s ability to possess firearms with stricter gun laws, since gun laws do not lower crime, and guns can keep people safe.
Taya Kyle, the author of the article “American Sniper Widow: Gun Control Won’t Protect Us”, believes that there are two sides of the argument on gun control. People can use statistics, facts, and real life examples to argue that there should be stricter control of guns in the US, but they cannot eliminate the emotional side of the story. While in the last two decades, violent crime rates have actually been reduced in the US, fears have gone up. Anyone can be a victim of a violent crime because if another person decides to do harm, they will do it under any circumstances.
As of February of 2018, there have been over 5,000 gun-related incidents in America this year, resulting in over 1,000 deaths. 18 of these gun-related events occured on school grounds, resulting in 22 deaths. These statistics are a disturbing look into the way that gun laws are handled in America; over the recent years, gun violence has skyrocketed, and each time a major incident occurs, the government does nothing but utter empty condolences, while doing nothing about the situation at hand. To protect the safety of the citizens of this country, gun control laws must become more strict. While some people claim that restricting gun laws infringes rights protected by the Second Amendment, adding specificity to the Second Amendment would
Mass shootings are now usual occurrence in the United States of America. In 2017, there were 346 mass shootings committed. The United States of America has seen a surge in mass shootings that have not been acts of terrorism, but rather citizens with mental health issues. Many citizens simply believe strict gun control is the solution to these mass shootings. Politicians like to soothe these citizens by saying increasing gun control will prevent mass shooters, but is there evidence to back up their claims or are they just using these tragedies to push their policies? More importantly, is this the main reason these individuals commit mass shootings? I have recently read multiple articles to get insight on how citizens view this situation, most articles
When tragic, major events happen in the United States, you can always expect an argument or something to unfold about how to prevent something similar from happening again. On October 1st, a man named Stephan Paddock, shot and killed 59 people including himself, while injuring an additional 546. This shooting is now considered the deadliest attack in United States history, so of course you can expect an ongoing political conversation on how to prevent attacks like this. During the attack, Paddock used what is called a “bump stock,” on many of his guns, making his guns’ rapid fire, like an automatic gun, which is what made it so easy for him to open fire and attack so many. After the tragic event, a gun control organization looked into the
Gun control has been a topic of conversation for a long time. With that comes the issue of gun violence that has taken over America, from concerts and movie theaters to schools and churches, mass shooting have taken many lives. Data has shown that 19 children are hospitalized every day from a gun related injury and 1,300 children are killed each year from gun injuries. And there are many people who are opposite sides of the firearm issue. Some people believe that it is their constitutional right to be able to own as many guns as they want while the opposite side of the spectrum believes that the second amendment should be erased from the constitution and make guns illegal. However, many people on both sides agree that kids need to be taught gun safety.
I have always struggled with making choices. My attention span is not very long because of my attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. It is extremely difficult for me to thoroughly think through every option that is available to me. This made it harder than it should have been to pick topics for my multiple essays. Choosing a topic determines the content of an entire essay. It is a very important aspect of writing. My indecision caused me to get behind on every essay that my english teacher assigned. As the class progressed I became better at choosing a topic.
People believe that the difficulty to acquire a gun is far too lenient. Since the birth of America, gun rights have been added to the law of the land, the Constitution. Gun rights were added to a section along with other basic human rights called the Bill of Rights: restrictions of the government 's power. This Gun right that allows us to own firearms is known as the Second Amendment. It states “...the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed”. Many people believe that none of the ten amendments of the Bill of Rights should change. Let 's not change the Bill of rights, let 's just make America safer and stricken the gun laws, I have gathered two helpful sources that will support my claim for my Junior Project; one
Arguments are apart of everyday life. We encounter them every day: at home, at work, while watching tv, driving, even listening to the radio. I am not saying we regularly encounter shouting matches, in fact arguing is a communication tool many of us use every day to problem solve. The true nature of arguments is described best by Ramage et al “…argument does not imply anger. In fact, arguing is often pleasurable. It is a creative and productive activity that engages us at high levels of inquiry and critical thinking…” (2). Arguments, at their core, are much more than our initial assumption. An argument can be described as anything that attempts to solve a conflict, that involves at least two conflicting assertions, by appealing to reason. These
Intro:The topic of gun control has been a huge debate since the first move towards gun violence with the National Firearms Act which was passed in 1929 and is still abided by today. The issue of gun control should be solved by preventing the mentally ill from purchasing guns. Given the current political ideology of the American government, preventing the mentally ill from obtaining guns is an unlikely solution to pass because the makeup of the government is Republican and they believe everyone no matter what has the right to own a gun.
How many times have you heard on the news about another shooting? Too many times! Having gun laws is something that a lot of people disagree and argue about. I think there should be more gun control laws for fewer deaths and safety reasons.
“Gun violence,” is a word that has been in the media too frequently over the last several years across America. Not a new problem, it is a reoccurring problem on school and college campuses, in shopping malls, in workplaces and even in movie theaters. Sadly, around 32,300 Americans are killed every year "from firearm injuries in the 24-year period from 1980 to 2006, accounting for 6.6% of years of potential life lost prior to the age of 65” (Morabia, Alfredo). Federal, state, and local governments have each been involved with the discussion and have implemented stricter gun control laws, yet these restrictions are not stopping the massacres. Many people believe the only way to solve this problem is to ban guns entirely, while others believe guns should not be banned at all. However, as hard as this polarizing issue is, there is a middle ground which gives the opportunity for law abiding citizens to own guns if they so choose to. The middle ground allows the government to restrict magazine size capabilities on all semi-automatic rifles and enforcing stricter background checks, without interfering with the rights of American citizens. While opponents claim it is unsafe for guns to be allowed, the second amendment guarantees citizens the right to bear arms and it should be obeyed in order to ensure the safety and constitutional rights of American citizens.
“The second amendment of The United States Bill of Rights is my concealed weapons permit, period.”- Ted Nugent. Saving lives one by one starts with limiting the purchase, sale, and use of guns in America. According to Alexander Lee, the political and social debate over the question of how much gun control is appropriate and it has been regularly discussed within the last decade. Shootings such as Sandy Hook, and Tucson shootings have raised the government’s awareness on guns and possible restrictions and regulations. Gun talks are discussed with the question, “Will controlling guns cut back on violent crime rates?” Although many guns are open to be sold to the public over 18, there are traditional gun laws that limit who can own them. These laws include sell restrictions to the mentally disabled, the age in which you can obtain a gun, background checks, and dishonorably discharged military personnel. Gun control laws could have a positive effect in America by reducing homicide rates, but at the same time, citizens still have the right to bear arms under the second amendment under the U.S constitution. Gun control laws do not mean the absolute confiscation of guns, but rather reduce the amount of power a gun and the amount of ammo that a gun can hold.
There are new proposed gun control laws in the aftermath of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut that occurred on December 14th, 2012. This incident claimed the lives of twenty 1st graders and six adults and has set the government in motion to try to prevent future acts of violence by strengthening gun control laws in the United States (Smith). This has been a topic that has been an extremely emotional debate with people on both sides unwilling to compromise. Gun advocates and critics of the new proposed gun laws argue that these new laws infringe on our constitutional
For many years, people have been pushing the American government to implement new laws that deal with gun control. Supporters of the argument claim that increased gun control will drastically reduce the crime rate in America. Nevertheless, a majority of gun control arguments are formed from strict control of data and emotional appeal. The mainstream media picks up these stories and broadcasts them to viewers without providing any context to them. While gun control activists assert that gun control is necessary, the American government should not ban guns because of the following reasons: potential vulnerability of innocent people being shot at by criminals and the inability for people to defend themselves against their own government.
