Nowhere in the nation, has police been able to recall a time where gun registration helped them solve a crime. The idea behind records is to use the gun from the scene to trace it back to its owner therefore tracking down the criminal. Sadly, criminals are too smart to register the firearms under their name. Whenever guns were actually left at the crime scene, was because criminals were killed or injured during the attack. Canada for instance, keeps a very detailed record of their crimes. For example, an identified weapon recollected made less than third of the country’s thousands of firearm crimes from 2003 to 2009. With only about twenty-five percent identified, these guns turned out to be under someone else’ name other than the criminals’.
Attention Getter: Would you feel safer if every gun owner was required to register their firearms with the police department? Do you think it would make the United States a safer place? Well, according to a national survey completed in 2011, 66% of Americans favor laws which would require every gun owner to register each gun they own.
Why do you think it is so important that all evidence be identified (such as marking the bullets and tagging firearms)? What consequences might result if these procedures were not followed?
Proponents of the program state that the registry system is an invaluable tool for law enforcement officials. It helps to track firearms and assist in solving cases, while respecting the rights of law-abiding citizens to own guns.
Looking at the nightly news, many would believe violent crimes are at an all-time high. There is no longer just one on one violent crimes or gang violent crimes. There are court shootings, school shootings, church shootings, theater shootings, mall shootings, workplace shootings, and others. Most one on one crime is committed with an illegal gun; whereas most mass shootings are done with handguns that are purchased legally. Although, violent crimes reported on the nightly news is hard to hear or see. It has become very common to encounter this information on a daily basis. The numbers seem to be overwhelming; statistics share violent crimes are at an all-time low. While the numbers of crimes are decreasing, gun ownership
Gun violence is a growing problem in society today. We need Shot Spotter systems implemented in high crime communities, such as Chicago, Illinois, to improve case closure rates, as well response times by police and first responders. In Chicago, from January 1, 2017 to March 23, 2017 there have already been 658 shooting victims (O'Connell, 2017). Today in a majority of communities, gun violence has to be called in or reported by civilians. Statistics show that only 20% of gun fire is reported (Shot Spotter, 2014). When they are reported, they often do not occur in a timely manner and the information provided is limited or incorrect. As a result, law enforcement agencies waste time following up on incorrect information provided.
Gun Ownership and Gun Control in Canada The Oscar-won documentary ‘Bowling for Columbine’ has aroused people’s awareness of gun ownership and gun control issues. Should gun ownership be banned or should guns be controlled? Does gun ownership create a violent society? The answer is not measurable, however, from the firearm situation between America and Canada, the answer is more obvious.
Current Gun Control regulations do not deter violence and crime. It has been shown that places that have relaxed their gun control laws have a higher crime and death rate. Data proves that homicide rates “[...] among the metro areas whose principal city is in a state that requires some form of permit to purchase a gun, is 4.32 per 100,000 residents, compared with 5.74 among cities in no-permit states”(Bailey). This is evidence that there is a correlation between gun control and death rates. It is also proven with statistical evidence that places with the least amount of gun control have the most violence. Statistics show that “‘none of the states with the most gun violence require permits to purchase rifles, shotguns, or handguns. Gun owners are also not required to register
Canada has been the more superior country over the United States, when it comes to gun control. It has been a social media crisis with all the killings that has happened over the last few years, that the United States has been known for this ongoing tragedy of gun violence. It has been proven that the United States owns more guns than Canada, space having over 50% more firearms per capita than the next two highest nations, Serbia and Yemen. According to STATS CAN report from 2012, it has been recorded that 8813 murders have occurred with firearm. Canada on the other hand had only suffered 172 firearms related homicides. Furthermore with Canadian gun laws, the two countries are completely different. To get a gun in Canada you
Guns and Crime, 2012 Formed in 2006, Mayors Against Illegal Guns is a coalition of over 550 mayors who support reforms to fight illegal gun trafficking and gun violence in the United States, while still respecting the Second Amendment. The background check system designed by Congress in 1993 to prohibit dangerous people from purchasing guns is not working effectively. But with the enforcement of critical new regulations, the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) could be an effective tool in preventing gun violence. One such regulation would require the names of all people known to be dangerous or criminal be registered in the NICS database, and those
Gun registration is a prevalent and serious issue in both the United States and Canada. Numerous attempts have been made to control the ownership and use of guns in both nations with very little results. In 1995 Canada passed a strict-gun control law partially in reaction to a 1989 shooting at Montreal’s Ecole Polytechnique with a semiautomatic rifle. The long-gun registry introduced in 1995 was estimated to be a certain cost but this was a great undervaluation of the expense of the registry system. Electronic Data Systems and U.K.-based SHL Systemhouse worked to create this gun registration system that eventually needed to be brought to a halt. There are numerous elements of project management that need to be executed correctly in order to successfully complete a project. In the case of Canada’s gun registration system the project failed due to inadequate management of the project scope, the planning of the process, and risk management.
According to the Law and Society Association 53,000 aggravated assault crimes involved a firearm in 1967. It’s also stated that this is only a small fraction on the guns in the United States at that time. Crimes pertaining to aggravated assault with a firearm will happen unless something done. That is why gun control laws are put in place to limit the how people can get guns, as well as how fast they can get them. There is of course the black-market to purchase a gun if someone really wants one to commit a crime and that is just one downside to gun control laws in the United States. If someone really wants a gun and they turn to the black-market then chances are the individual or group is going to commit a heinous crime. Also the Law
The federal government is mainly responsible for guns and gun control in Canada. Legislation covering guns and gun control in Canada consists mainly of Part II of the Criminal Code of Canada (CCC) and related regulations, and the Firearms Act. Firearms Act is an act respecting firearms and other weapons. The Canadian Firearms Program (CFP), part of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), is responsible for the authority of the Firearms Act, which covers the possession, transportation, use and storage of firearms in Canada. The CFP handles the licensing of individuals and maintains a national database of firearms records. Additional laws and regulations also apply at the provincial or municipal level of government. There are three classes
Further, despite the fact that gun ownership in the U.S. increased enormously during the 1990’s, there was a consistent, dramatic reduction of criminal violence. In fact, homicide and violent crime have plunged over the last 15 years. Considering that 18 of 25 countries surveyed had an increase of violent crime, America’s large decline is impressive. Moreover, Norway, Finland, Germany, France, and Denmark also have a high rate of private gun ownership, and the murder rates in these countries are as low as or lower than developed nations with less gun ownership (Kates & Mauser, 2007).
With the popular culture providing positive images of guns, the United States has a gun prevalence that is very rare in the modern world. While many people appreciate the “gun culture”, guns are heavily involved in violence in the United States. According to U.S. Department of Justice, since 1960, more than 750,000 Americans have died under firearms, including homicides, suicides, and unintentional injuries. The figure 1 provides a comprehensive survey of U.S. violent crimes for the period from 1993 to 2011.This figure illustrates that from 1993 to 2011, about 60% to 70% of homicides were associated with a firearm. Over the same period, between 6% and 9% of all nonfatal violence, with about 20% to 30% of robberies and 22% to 32% of aggravated assaults involving a firearm.
Guns and crime. These two words sound interesting, right? Now think about it deeply, do they really link to each other? Do guns surely lead to crime and violent issues? If so, should governments set restrictive rules for people who own and use the guns, such as provide the mental health reports, and test the shooting skills before purchasing the guns? These questions have been mentioned and discussed over and over again in today’s world. We can often hear the news about gun violence, such as a tragic mass shooting somewhere around the world and tons of victims who died from the accident, or husband that shot his wife by accident. Thus, many people, especially people in America, are asking, and even doubting whether or not it is beneficial to own guns at home without a license. In my opinion, I think that owning a gun can be helpful sometimes in some ways, as it can always be the extremely powerful and helpful weapon for self-defense, especially when help from the law enforcement officers are not available.
