Everyday 93 Americans are killed by guns. Whether it is due to homicide or suicide, it does not matter. At the end of the day gun violence is increasing exponentially. In numerous states, gun laws have been placed in the hopes of reducing gun violence. But now many people believe that gun violence should be treated as a public health problem. I for one feel that gun violence should be put in the category of public health. Every year more than 30,000 people are victims to gun related incidents. It has become such an issue that gun violence is causing more deaths than some life threatening diseases.

On January 25, 2016, at approximately 5:14 P.M., I, Deputy John Arnold, was dispatched to 6424 South 61st West Avenue on a report of a shooting. While en-route to the address, dispatch advised that the call was a suicide.

Many remember December 14th of 2012 when Adam Lanza shot and killed 20 students and 6 members of the faculty of Sandy Hook Elementary School. Mr. Lanza was a troubled man, enough so that he was driven to shoot his own mother and take possession of her weapons which he would use to wreak havoc on the school whose name would go down in history. Gun violence has been a problem for quite a long time in America and it can't go on. Gun violence needs to come to a stop, but what is going to happen to bring it to an end. Many lives are being taken every year from high powered guns and what can happen to prevent it. There aren't many things that can prevent these things from happening, but it can be stopped.

Gun is violence is a very controversial political topic that has been discussed repeatedly over the last couple years. While there are many people that support loosening gun laws there are also just as many people who are 100% against the idea. David Burnett and Darby Dickerson happen to be 2 individuals who both have conflicting views on gun laws and what should and should not be allowed in the United States. In this particular case, the two differ specifically on how gun laws should be treated on college campuses. On one side, there is David Burnett, dean of Texas Tech University School of Law, who completely supports the idea of concealed carry on college campuses. On the other side David Burnett, the director of public relations for Students, who is completely against the idea. Both authors do a very good job at not only standing firm in their position but also providing the evidence to back up their position.

Gun Violence is the most disturbing issue ever around the world. As indicated by Gun Policy.org, 75 percent of the world's, 875 million firearms are non military personnel controlled. All inclusive, millions are injured using weapons. Attack by firearms brought about 180,000 passings in 2013 up from 128,000 passings in 1990. There were moreover 47,000 in thought gun related passings in 2013("Gun Violence", 2017). According to the article a three year old girl was faitily shot and killed in d.c in a second-floor apartment at Benning Terrace by a child playing with a gun. D.C police said a child had a gun in his hands and fired it, turning a innocent summer time play into tragedy when a bullet struck 3 year old Dallas cox in the chest. The police also said we have no reason to belive that it is anything other than an accident, so what we are looking at is how the gun got into the house.

As the daughter of a victim of gun violence I know what it is like to hear about this rising issue and instantly feel pained. Gun violence not only harms those that have been injured or killed, but it takes a lot from close relatives and friends. Within in the past few years it has become normal to hear about this act of violence occurring in America. According to GunViolenceArchive.org, there have been a total of 14,259 incidents in 2016 thus far. This is shocking because the year just began a few months ago and this number is extremely high. The big question is why is this number so high? The gun violence rate in America has inclined over the years and if nothing is being set in place to stop or control it, it will only get worse as the years continue. The Washington Post’s article, “Gun Violence in America is out of Control” is simply stating that the gun violence in America is out of hand and as citizens we need to be aware of this issue and keep that in mind when we are voting for our next president. Personally, for me, it hits home since I work in an elementary school. When you work in a school, a shooting is one of your biggest deepest fears. After hearing about the Florida shooting, everyone in school was talking about it and still are. Gun violence is very prominent in the United States. It has been for quite some time. There are several problems with how people are accessing firearms, and the type of firearms they are buying. People are accessing firearms way to easy nowadays. Some of these firearms are stolen or illegal. We need to somehow crack down on firearms and how these men and women are accessing them so easily. According to BBC, “Some 13,286 people were killed in the US by firearms in 2015, and 26,819 people were injured. These figure exclude suicides.” They also stated “There were 372 mass shootings in the US in 2015, killing 475 people and wounding 1,870, according to the Mass Shooting Tracker, which catalogues such incidents. A mass shooting is defined as a single shooting incident which kills or injures four or more people, including the assailant.” These numbers are outrageous and something needs to be done.

In modern America today, the issue on gun violence and gun control is becoming a major issue in today's society. Many Americans agree owning a gun is their automatic right due to the second Amendment. There are also politicians who are in favor of background checks when purchasing a gun from commercial industries and internet sales. The topic on banning assault weapons has many politicians arguing amongst themselves as well. We should continue to fight for gun control and reduce violence without Americans losing their right to the second amendment.

Instead, of using a gun for protection, many people misuse this weapon, increasing unintended injuries, and even deaths.
