How is it possible for an bland, brainwashed guy to rebel and challenge the system? Somehow, Guy Montag is able to do so. He was brainwashed into thinking that his society is a utopia, and that books were bad but he changes into a thoughtful, rebellious character. In the beginning, he loved to burn books as a fireman. He has a seemingly picture perfect life, until he meets Clarisse, a girl who is fascinated by life. She quietly questions the world and what happens in it. This experience causes Guy Montag to think. This is the turning point for him as he starts to question the world around him. He starts to ask Beatty questions like “Didn’t firemen prevent fires rather than stoke them up and get them going?” (page 31) As he hears the answers
His personality is different from other firefighters. He isn’t intimidating and doesn’t necessarily think that burning books is good. I do like Montag, but I’m waiting for him to make up his mind about whose side he’s on.
Guy montag, a future fireman who sets fires, and enjoys it. This society cant read books, it's illegal, all books are burned seemingly to everyone’s enjoyment, including guy. Largely defining his character as finding a fire-fueled smile that never leaves his face. Clarisse, a girl living next to guy, changes his mind with simple questions he’s never heard, “are you in love?’’ No one asks him a personal question, he doesn't know the answer. With books being burned for their knowledge, authenticity is scarce and people are feed what they “need” to hear, substance-less information no one cares to change or question because they don't know how, just hop in the truck and hit 90 mph for an hour if something bothers
“He began to shuffle idiotically and talk to himself and then he broke and just ran.” (Page 127)
Unquestionably, all novels can convey multiple meanings depending on a variety of factors with the most important being the manner in which the audience interprets the author’s words. More importantly, to professionally draw conclusions concerning the message the author demonstrates throughout a text, it is essential to discuss and apply the five literary elements of literature to the text. In greater detail, when a work itself is criticized or evaluated, usually one literary element is focused on to prove an argument pertaining to a novel. To bring the topic into focus, Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 possesses many points that could be argued in contradictory ways based upon factual
Guy Montag is a man that cannot think for himself and enjoys following the government’s orders. The novel introduces him with one of his thoughts, “It was a pleasure to burn. It was a special pleasure to see things eaten, to see things blackened and changed” (Bradbury 1). On his way home from work one day, Guy meets a young girl named Clarisse McClellan. She’s the only person who questions his actions and challenges him to start thinking about why he burns books. Clarisse asks Montag if he ever reads the books that he burns, Montag laughs and says, “That’s against the law!” (Bradbury 5). Montag has been so brainwashed and ignorant about burning books, but Clarisse gives him new ideas by continuing to create doubts in his mind. She talks to Montag about the firemen from the past and how they were different then they are now. Clarisse says to Montag, “Is it true that long ago
From all outward appearances, Guy Montag is content in his job as a fireman in the 24th century town in which he lives. He has learned to accept that his society is dictatorial, expressly forbidding its citizens from reading or possessing books or seeking any other intellectual self-improvement. Montag has even learned to take pleasure in the flames that shoot from his igniter when he is called to burn the dwelling of the citizens that possess books or commit other crimes against the society. He is successful in distancing himself from the fact that his purpose in life is to destroy other peoples' property.
In the beginning of Fahrenheit 451, the main character, Guy Montag, lives by the social norms of his community. He doesn't question any of the rules that his society has created, such as burning books and literature due to their offensive nature. After meeting a girl named Clarisse, all of the opinions that have been set in his brain are questioned. Montag undergoes something of a moral crisis and decides to rewire the thoughts that he once trusted. Suddenly he sees his wife Mildred differently, and wishes that he had developed a better relationship with her, but she drifted away from him because she prefers the comfort of the television over her husband.
Fahrenheit 451 consists of multiple diverse characters, including a significant man named Guy Montag. Montag plays the main character strongly and effectively and has an immense impact on the story, and has one of the most vital parts of the story. Through Montag's actions, ideas, and feelings, he forms into a new person and changes throughout the story from fitting into what seems to be a utopian society in the beginning, but then later fitting into a dystopian society in reality.
It is against the law to own books. When caught, firemen burn the books and the owners home along with it. Guy Montag is one of those firemen. He used to be an average guy, living in an average home and, he lived an average life. There was one thing about him that most people wouldn’t find very “normal” in past societies. He is a fireman. Some may not think that it’s odd to be fireman, but, in this society, firemen don’t have the role that most would think. According to the “new” government, books are illegal and the people who own them are criminals. Firemen, on the other hand, are instructed to find who owns said books, go to that person’s home and burn those books along with the owners home. Guy Montag has changed drastically throughout the story. He used to be an average guy, but now he is a criminal on the run.
They had a system and it worked for the most part. There were no books allowed anywhere so that no one could think. There were people called firemen and if they got a call saying there were books hidden somewhere they would head over and burn the books and/or the house the books were located in. Guy Montag was one of these firemen who loved their job but started questioning his belief in the practice. There were many actions and thoughts that had caused him to change his mindset of burning all the books to wanting to have a future with books, a future where people could think freely and not end up the same as everyone else. One of these actions was when he met a 17-year-old girl named Clarisse and she told him about the past when everyone could
