More clearly than the Bible, Greek/Roman mythology helps outline the life cycle that almost always applies to the traditional archetypal hero. With basic knowledge of the Bible we can determine right from wrong and its influence in real life when reading mythology. As the reader we experience this when seeing the actions the hero takes, as explained by Frye when he states, "... the central myth of the hero whose mysterious birth, triumph and marriage, death and betrayal and eventual rebirth..." (Frye, 67), explaining the archetypical story outline of the tragic hero. As an example of the archetype, the story of Hercules starts with the mysterious birth of a being that is half god and half man, with his father famously being Zeus. In countless stories where males give birth, gods use humans for their own pleasure, and fathers swallow their children, it’s impossible to lose oneself in the soap-opera-esque reminiscence. With a glorious name that is known to this day, Hercules is seen as a hero because of his great strength and courage. He has multiple archetypes, but the question is, which one is more predominant? Hercules is different in each story. In the myth he is considered one archetype and in the Disney animation he is considered a completely different archetype.

I sat lazily on a rainy day scrolling hopelessly through Netflix. Everyone else was out, either at school or shopping, just me alone at home. Suddenly my hopeless state was broken as I saw the Disney film Hercules appear in the corner of the screen. Instantly, I thought back to my first time viewing the movie years ago. It had been another crummy day like this yet my brothers and I sat swaddled in blankets all together watching intently. We enjoyed hot, buttery microwave popcorn. Our hands moving almost mechanically in and out of the bowl as our eyes stayed glued to the screen. At this moment in time I didn’t care one bit about the theme, nor did I know what a theme was! Now I do, and now I can see the important message the filmmakers carefully weaved into the storyline. I believe in the Disney film "Hercules", the positive portrayal of the initiate archetype shows how we as humans may lose faith but if we continue to work hard and persevere our hard work will benefit us in the end.

In both the Disney movie and the written version of the myth about Hercules there are a lot of similarities. Hercules is very loved by his father and he is also a demigod in both. In both the Disney movie and the written version Hercules had to perform nearly impossible tasks. In both a girl named Meg acted as a mortal god. Also, there are a lot of differences in the Disney movie and the written version. In the Disney movie Hercules was born on Mt.Olympus and in the written version he was born in Thebes. Another difference is in the Disney movie Hercules becomes a god by performing one ultimate task. In the written version Hercules has to perform the 12 labors for Hercules to be a god.

The Disney Hercules is born of the Olympian gods, Zeus and Hera, after which he is kidnapped by Hades, the ruler of the underworld, who wishes to overthrow Zeus and usurp this throne. However, he needs Hercules out of the way first. Although Hades' plan to kill Hercules in infancy fails, Hercules is turned into a mortal on earth, where he is left feeling like an outcast. After Hercules leaves his (unbeknownst to him) adoptive parents to find his destiny, he discovers his true origins and strives to return to Olympus by becoming a true hero. But to do this, he must first learn what it means to be a "true hero" while overcoming the obstacles that Hades throws his way. Although this plot is entertaining to younger audiences, it deviates from the original myth, according to which Heracles was the son of Zeus and a mortal woman (a demi-god). In addition, neither was Heracles kidnapped by Hades, nor did Hades want to overthrow Zeus; he submitted to Zeus and sought pleasure in ruling the Underworld. Accordingly, Disney chose to represent Hades as the antagonist in this movie due to his role as leading the Underworld. Although the Underworld was not correlated to Hell in any way, the stereotypical idea of the Underworld being a symbol of evil was still present. In the movie “Disney Hercules” Zeus and Hera were portrayed as loving parents who loves their son, Hercules. Zeus is buff and has white hair and a beard. He gave Hercules a Pegasus named Pegasus. Hera has long blond hair, pinkish skin, and a narrow face. Both of them love Hercules and protected him from Hades who came as an unexpected guest to Hercules’ birth. In the myth, Zeus is a cheating father and only loves some of his children, not all of them. He is always getting into trouble with Hera, is jealous wife. Hera was jealous when Zeus had another child so she sent two snakes to kill Hercules, but Hercules killed them both. Hera is a jealous wife and she is not a loving mother. The movie did not do a good job of portraying the gods and goddesses because Hera is not the mother of Hercules, she was the one who sent the two snakes to kill Hercules, and she is jealous of Zeus’ wives. Zeus was not portrayed well either because he doesn't have Hercules with Hera but with another woman. When Hercules was born, he was born mortal, but with strength. This information decides if the movie did a good job making it similar. It tells that Zeus really did have a son Hercules, but Hera isn’t related to him in the myth and movie, just Zeus is.

Pietro Francisci's Hercules is a film which, although hearkening back to the original Greek myth of Heracles, does not faithfully relate any of the events presented in the the ancient version of the life of the fabled demi-god. Rather, it presents a light-hearted storyline filled with action and romance which incorporates very few elements of the myth while avoiding the darker, more violent aspects of the events, no doubt broadening its appeal to American movie-goers in the fifties.

At first glance it seems that Hercules and “Heraclês” are about the same. There is a lot that is similar, but there is also a lot that is different. A lot of what was changed was because of cultural values of the times that the two were made. A few cultural value changes include heroism, love, and family.

Family values is a very large difference between Hercules and “Heraclês”. In the very beginning of the movie, it is shown that Hera was Zeus’ only wife and the father of Hercules. However, in the myth, Zeus has many wives, and his child Heraclês

There is a man in an incestuous marriage cheating on his sister, and with the sister now enraged she attempts to kill the bastard child born out of adultery; otherwise known, as the story of Hercules. Somehow, Disney decided to interpret this story into a family friendly kids movie, which can clearly only be done with some very major changes to the story. With there now being two different variants of the legend known as Hercules, it is interesting to see just how much his character changed between the two.

Disney’s Hercules is a popular movie based off of the Greek myth Hercules. However, there are numerous differences that range from the basic plot to a character mix-ups. “It is fraught with such inaccuracies and embellishments so as to be barely recognizable as the same story” (House 1). The movie Hercules and the myth are two completely different stories.

Like most movies based on reality, the differences between the myth and the movie outweigh the similarities in order to make the movie more appealing. Because the movie is for young children, many of the details of Hercules are not included. One of the details is the actual birth of Hercules as in the movie he was born immortal and his parents were god’s Zeus and Goddess Hera. In Greek mythology according to a textbook called Classical Mythology, Hercules was known as Heracles and was born mortal, but instead of his mother being Hera his mother was Alcmene who was daughter of Electryon king of Mycenae (Lenardon, Morford, & Sham, 2014, p.562). In the movie, it does not really explain Hercules birth as he is seen a cute baby, but in Greek myth he was consummated because Zeus disguised himself as Amphitryon (husband of Alcmene) (House, 2015). Another difference is that in the movie, Hercules is an only child where as in Greek myth he had a twin who was consummated after Alcmene realised she was tricked and decided to let her actual husband Amphitryon lie beside her to hide the truth (Lenardon, Morford, & Sham, 2014, p.563).

Zeus, the Olympian king of the gods, was the god of the sky, weather, fate and law. Everything has to go by Zeus, in order for it to occurred, and all the gods knew that getting Zeus upset was not a good idea. However, there was one god that always mentioned to get Zeus full of anger and that was Hades, his own brother, the ruler of Underworld. He was the god of the dead and riches and Zeus’s older brother. He has always been jealous of Zeus for being the chosen one to be the ruler of all the gods and he was always finding ways to make Zeus’s rule harder.
